TomVH: DB Wayne Morgan Video: Camp Performance
Huge thanks to MGoUser "Mich Fan From Brooklyn" [Endi Mitchell] for attending this camp, shooting the video, taking notes, and conducting interviews. He did an awesome job. Here's what Endi captured from the Future Phenom Showcase that took place in Brooklyn, New York this past weekend:
Wayne Morgan won fastest man award, while LB Devaughn Cholette took home MVP for the camp.
Notes on Wayne:
- Listed at 5'10", 187 lbs.
- Hampered by a hamstring injury from earlier in the week
- 40 yard dash was hand timed. Wayne's two times were 4.43 and 4.35 respectively [featured in the video below].
- 20 yard shuttle times were 4.22 and 4.09 seconds.
- Endi thought Wayne was very aggressive. He went against the taller, lengthy receivers and showed great press ability. He allowed very little separation, and showed the speed to stay with all of the receivers there. He looked like the most athletic player on the field.
- Morgan worked at both corner and safety and looked even more impressive at safety. He closed on routes and was always in position to make a play. It seemed like the quarterbacks didn't want to throw his way, and when they did it was overthrown.
- Wayne is very confident, very vocal with his fellow defenders and even more so towards the receivers. He seemed to have a short memory when he made a mistake, he came back and corrected it the next time.
Video:
And Wayne, I like you more every day! Fastest Man? Get out . . . I'm starting to like this new secondary we are building - I really, really am . . .
I didn't include the interview Endi did with Wayne because it was pretty difficult to hear Wayne, but he says his announcement on June 2nd will be between Michigan and Rutgers.
I would say we have picked up a CB,SS, and a FS in this class so far. That sounds perfect to me.
To hear him call out Blue in 2 days!!
Fake or not hes definitly a burner-love the versatility-I am sure Mattison will find the best spot for him.
Standifer, Reeves and Morgan all look like they'll be Blue. I'm not sure if they'll take all of them, though.
i think penn state will push him and maybe they layed of from wayne morgan a little bit because they want reeves
...grandmother's alma mater (Class of '32 FTW)!
We have to lock this kid up.
Fascinating school history. Check out the notable alumni.
I think a late aunt was also an alum from around then. Tons of notables, from Barbra Streisand to Bernard Malamud, from Neil Diamond to Beverly Sills, at least one Nobel Prize winner (Eric Kandel, in Physiology & Med), Mickey Spillane, Mae West and more. (I checked the other day when telling a local Michigan law alum about Morgan-- she said she grew up in the Erasmus district, though she went to Midwood High.)
It does have a great history, and a landmark building. Who knew they had a football field? And how clever to use the subway to simulate crowd noise. Obviously didn't affect Morgan's concentration a whit.
Wow! Those times with a bum hammy!? He sounds like the real deal. Lets get Armani Reeves and we'll be all set
Wayne Morgan's game reminds me a lot of Raymon Taylor from 2011 - Guy who can play corner or free safety, with elite speed and great ball skills. Whereas Morgan has more beef, I remember Taylor being lauded for his willingness to hit hard.
Those two might be competing for the starting FS job in a few years.
Regarding Armani Reeves, he might be a guy the coaches take no matter what, or depending on what happens with Burbridge and Stanford, might be a guy the coaches recruit for WR.
use him as a receiver? i mean we recruited a ton of WRs when RR was here but he did it in such a short time. the rejecting devin lucien move isnt looking to good but i support the coaches decision because thats their job and they have been doing it for years
Yes, I'm sure we could use him as a receiver. Some schools, including PSU, are recruiting him either as a receiver or giving him the option to play both/either. We're looking to take a receiver in this class, so if he's willing and we don't have one yet, we might decide to go that route.
I haven't heard or read anything saying M is looking at him there, but he's a great athlete and other schools are, so it's a thought.
AFAIK, Michigan is only looking at him for defense. I remember Reeves saying that he might have to ask the coaches about playing offense and/or returning kicks and punts, but it sounds like the coaches haven't broached that subject with him.
We could definitely use Reeves as a wideout. I would almost prefer him there, although I'd take him as a corner, too.
Love this kid more and more everytime I see him. Could be a star CB, FS, SS, KR/PR, you name it...
Fast, unafraid to make a big hit, always in position, short memory, very vocal with the defense, confident - anybody else think of the Baltimore Ravens defense?
Talk about being shot out of a cannon.
Thanks for shooting this video, Endi. I thought it was pretty cool seeing the elevated train going by as they were running the drills. Gave it some true NYC flavor.
It's nice that the FAKE hand-timed 40s were really fast instead of just good. What lag do you think results from hand timing? .1-.2?
Hand timed numbers can be faster or slower actually. I can't remember who it was right now, but a couple years ago there was a guy that ran an official 4.46. The Colts scout had him at a 4.41, while another scout had him at 4.48. I know at the scouting combine, scouts still hand time each guy's 40, and most scouts will actually take their own hand timed 40 over the "official" laser timed one.
To be honest, I've always felt like there's a little mental game that happens. If a scout thinks a guy "looks fast" he unconsciously stops the watch a little sooner. If he looks slow, a little later.
Hand timed or not, the fact that the higher of the two is 4.43 and the two times only differ by 8 hundreths, it's safe to say he can run really fast. Any kid who can run multiple sub-4.5 40's at the same camp is probably a burner.
That it would be difficult to hand time a guys 40 while unconscious...I guess now I know what Tim is talking about when he is handing out the fakes...whether the hand timer is conscious or not must at least add a couple fakes.
He ran that with a bad hamstring! Wow!
If he's projected as a CB then I'm happy. If he's projected as a FS then he could be a good Eraser. Looks like he has great closing speed, help keep qb's honest on the deep passes.
this was fantastic to see. I agree with the above, the 40's do look like they're in fast forward. Morgan has a very distinct way of running, and looks like a blazer
I think this kid has the potential to be a stud in the defensive backfield - hopefully he is blue tomorrow!
keep it rolling Hoke!!
I was excited to cover the camp this weekend. Im glad i was able to contribute something to this excellent site. wayne is a good football player. trust me i didnt speed up any of the tape. but i also didnt time the 40 so; you can be the judge.
Seems we can disregard this now
Thanks Wayne......even my 20 month old was excited for your announcement.
