TomVH: DB Wayne Morgan Video: Camp Performance

  • Wayne Morgan

Huge thanks to MGoUser "Mich Fan From Brooklyn" [Endi Mitchell] for attending this camp, shooting the video, taking notes, and conducting interviews. He did an awesome job. Here's what Endi captured from the Future Phenom Showcase that took place in Brooklyn, New York this past weekend:

Wayne Morgan won fastest man award, while LB Devaughn Cholette took home MVP for the camp.

Notes on Wayne:

  • Listed at 5'10", 187 lbs.
  • Hampered by a hamstring injury from earlier in the week
  • 40 yard dash was hand timed. Wayne's two times were 4.43 and 4.35 respectively [featured in the video below].
  • 20 yard shuttle times were 4.22 and 4.09 seconds.
  • Endi thought Wayne was very aggressive. He went against the taller, lengthy receivers and showed great press ability. He allowed very little separation, and showed the speed to stay with all of the receivers there. He looked like the most athletic player on the field.
  • Morgan worked at both corner and safety and looked even more impressive at safety. He closed on routes and was always in position to make a play. It seemed like the quarterbacks didn't want to throw his way, and when they did it was overthrown.
  • Wayne is very confident, very vocal with his fellow defenders and even more so towards the receivers. He seemed to have a short memory when he made a mistake, he came back and corrected it the next time.

I think a late aunt was also an alum from around then.  Tons of notables, from Barbra Streisand to Bernard Malamud, from Neil Diamond to Beverly Sills, at least one Nobel Prize winner (Eric Kandel, in Physiology & Med), Mickey Spillane, Mae West and more.  (I checked the other day when telling a local Michigan law alum about Morgan-- she said she grew up in the Erasmus district, though she went to Midwood High.)

It does have a great history, and a landmark building.  Who knew they had a football field?  And how clever to use the subway to simulate crowd noise.  Obviously didn't affect Morgan's concentration a whit.

Yes, I'm sure we could use him as a receiver.  Some schools, including PSU, are recruiting him either as a receiver or giving him the option to play both/either.  We're looking to take a receiver in this class, so if he's willing and we don't have one yet, we might decide to go that route.

I haven't heard or read anything saying M is looking at him there, but he's a great athlete and other schools are, so it's a thought.

Hand timed numbers can be faster or slower actually.  I can't remember who it was right now, but a couple years ago there was a guy that ran an official 4.46.  The Colts scout had him at a 4.41, while another scout had him at 4.48.   I know at the scouting combine, scouts still hand time each guy's 40, and most scouts will actually take their own hand timed 40 over the "official" laser timed one.

To be honest, I've always felt like there's a little mental game that happens.  If a scout thinks a guy "looks fast" he unconsciously stops the watch a little sooner.  If he looks slow, a little later.

If he's projected as a CB then I'm happy. If he's projected as a FS then he could be a good Eraser. Looks like he has great closing speed, help keep qb's honest on the deep passes.

this was fantastic to see.  I agree with the above, the 40's do look like they're in fast forward.  Morgan has a very distinct way of running, and looks like a blazer
