"Enjoy Every Sandwich"—Warren Zevon
There is almost a cottage industry of writing articles about this Warren Zevon interview from 2002 with David Letterman.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giTi8KWSZl4
Letterman was a great fan of Zevon, and devoted the entire show to him. The background of that quote is that Zevon had been given a terminal cancer prognosis, he had less than a year to live.
Talking to other friends, many conversations end up talking about fast forwarding to OSU. In a former life, I was the math teacher at an alternative credit recovery high school south of Houston. We had a counselor there who more the school psychologist rather than the schedule maker type.
There’s a common refrain in education when the school or teacher is struggling: Just make it to the _______. Can fill in with weekend, spring break, Christmas break. During one of these pity sessions. She said some paraphrased “it’s your life that ’ you are fast forwarding.” Struck a nerve with me.
Enjoy the season and what few games there are. Granted, this is the third game with a three TD spread or more. But we only have between 4 and 7 games with this team and many of its players. Spend a little more time discussing the teams flaws with a friend, go to an extra game, write convoluted scenarios where Michigan can lose and still make the CFP. Go to church to pray for a mild breeze or rain in Columbus.
Me Figuring out 11-1 Michigan's chances at CFP before Saturday
And After Saturday
These seasons unfortunately don’t come around often, Enjoy as much as you can.'
White Lightning Sazerac
How is this a Sazerac? Well you replace the Cognac with corn whiskey, the absinthe with with green chartreuse, add some Lillet Blanc. And add ice to it.
Well I guess we’re keeping the sugar cube.
A Sazerac is cognac forward drink popular in New Orleans made with bitters and an absinthe rinse. It's an IBA official cocktail, and one I haven't really mastered. Either that or they just aren't good.
Ingredients
2 oz Corn Whiskey
1 oz lillet blanc ( the important ingredient in the Vesper martini)
1 sugar cube
4 dashes orange bitters
.25 oz Green Chartreuse
1 Sprig Rosemary. As you can see I didn't keep that plant alive long
Take a old fashioned glass and rinse the glass with the green chartreuse. Rinse by putting the green chartreuse in the bottom and swirling around the glass and discard. Get another glass, take the sugar cube and muddle with the orange bitters. Add the Whiskey and Lillet and ice and stir. Strain into the prepared glass. Sazerac does not add ice, this drink needs it.. use large cubes or omit. Garnish with the rosemary.

Big fan of Chartreuse and Lillet! I will try this one! Quick question--does using a cube vs. simple make a difference?
Also, what are your thoughts on green vs. yellow chartreuse?? I love both, but the yellow is a bit more floral and I love using it!!

Don't think green vs yellow would make much of a difference in this one. I end up using green much more often than yellow, in the Last Word .. other things
Yes, may not be much a difference between a cube and using some tsp of sugar. But Simple would make this too sweet,

A sugar cube can give a slightly grainier texture, which a lot of people prefer. It also gives the drink more of an evolution as you drink it because some of the sugar will be gathered at the bottom, so the drink gets a little sweeter as it goes. Depends on the mood for me. Basically:
Want some texture and evolution? Sugar Cube
Want a clean and consistent drink? Simple syrup (1/4oz = 1 sugar cube)

That's a great point. I didn't know how to articulate that.

personal opinion, but they're just not good ... absinthe isn't very good, and I have had cheap and expensive versions. my son has the whole fancy setup where you drip the absinthe over the sugar cube etc. he likes absinthe. i do not.
cognac = good
cognac + bitters = good
cognac + bitters + absinthe = bad
ergo, absinthe is bad.

Completely agree. I gave up on the absinthe. Don't even have a bottle anymore

Cannot make a corpse reviver number two without absinthe. The first one I made I put too much absinthe in and I learned the hard way it's just the rinse. Now I drink them all the time and I love them. You should try it sometime. Still hate absinthe, but everything combines with correct proportions. Can't wait to try this drink. Thanks.

I had forgotten Corpse Revivor #2! I enjoyed that one. I think that's how I eventually used the absinthe I had.
My general problem is with liquors is that if I store underneath the cabinet I forget I even have it. And I'm a little OCD with my bar space. Maybe time to think of keeping a bottle of absinthe underneath.
One bottle might last a decade

It's definitely a divisive spirit. Many people love or hate the anise (black licorice-y) flavor, and there's not much you can do to change someone's mind on that.

Sorry, Doc. Gotta disagree with you on this one. To me, there's no better drink to relax outside on a hot and humid summer night than absinthe (with just a drop of cold water). It's also surprisingly good and very refreshing mixed with ginger ale.

The problem with being in the moment (and not fast forwarding through the “boring” or difficult times) is that in doing so, we discover that the outcome of the game isn’t really very important in the grand scheme of things - the sky is still blue, the bees still drink nectar in the clover, and the birds still sing sweetly in the trees.
I’ll cling to my angst, thank you very much.

mbrummer2, thanks for this post. Not only because I'm a school counselor and you make us sound wise, but because this drink sounds delicious. My only issue with it is that I haven't been able to find green chartreuse ANYWHERE for close to a year. Do you have a secret stash, or a supply line that runs straight to the Carthusian monks-or in your new life, ARE you a Carthusian monk? It's tough because nothing I've found truly tastes like green chartreuse. May take your suggestion below and use yellow (For corn :).

That's really odd. I didn't know they were having supply chain issues. I'm just a home bartender, so a bottle of chartreuse lasts a long time. Probably haven't bought one in a year.
Now I'm going to check tomorrow if my store has it.
** Just read the article about it.. Yikes! and Sorry

My store had 8 bottles of each. Price went up by 33%. But they were there
November 11th, 2022 at 2:31 PM ^
Wow! Buy the 8 bottles of green and re-sell them. Hello, retirement! :)

Not to be "that guy," but Ive just gotten into the Sazerac lately and am a bit obsessed, so I am having a crisis of faith here. Isn't it supposed to be Rye Whiskey (and not Cognac?)
November 11th, 2022 at 8:50 AM ^
Can be Either!
The original is Cognac. Rye was substituted in the late 1800's when Cognac became scarce.
November 11th, 2022 at 11:23 AM ^
Well I'll have to try it then. The reason I like the sazerac, I think, is the lack of bourbon-barrel (and I like the extra layer of complexity the Absinthe brings.) I even got a "big" ice cube tray to facilitate.
Any recommendations for the Cognac?

Remy 1738 is nice. Makes a great sidecar.
Someone else might chime in. I've never made a sazerac I liked.
