EVERYBODYFREAKOUT LOCKTHEWINDOWS SOWEDON'TJUMPOUT!!!

It's a little disconcerting when these players come here for *FREE* (and then some) and they don't expect to work hard. When I played high school sports, we had workouts that were "voluntary" but everyone knew the coaches wanted you there. To me, it's more of a tell-tale sign of what cupcakes the former teams had become.
I'm not too sure what to make of the "allegations". It seems that there were some former players (and I'm not too sure if the current players that were mentioned were just the freshmen that he cut and pasted their quotes) that didn't like the change in culture and want to throw stones.

My take: What it seems to me is that Rodriguez, Barwis walk in last year... see the dumbbells ala jack lalanne circa 19-ought-8... and after picking their jaws off the floor, they say "we have a ton of work to do". So they have their meeting with the players, say "this is how it's going to change", and in their minds they know they will suck, but let's whip these fluffballs into shape for next year. Workouts become hard, reallyyyy hard (comparatively, you know, like actual workouts now), and some don't like this change. Workouts beyond the 8 hours are "voluntary" as everyone winks, but just like every other sport, it's about who wants it bad enough. All they knew from the Carr days was full large pizzas and lifting some weight some times, right? Some shined in these situations, some didn't, got left behind, and now complained to a willing Freep who is more than happy to sensationalize it to end up on the ESPN.com ticker. The Brandon Minors excelled, the Borens didn't in this environment.

Looks like a freep headline to me. BTW, anyone think a story about M having lots of voluntary workouts like all other 119 FBS schools would have ever been printed?

Awesome license plate. I envy you. As I hear the band playing outside my window, I wonder if they are overworked, too? I mean, they start playing (waking me up) at 8 AM, then it goes on all day, they could be violating some NCAA rules right now. Just sayin'...

Thriller is going to be a stand tune, it's taken from a 2006 Michael Jackson halftime show. And going alone the same lines, as one of my friends just pointed out, being in the Michigan Marching Band does not guarantee that you come out of the tunnel for pregame. To achieve that in many cases (such as mine) requires a lot of outside-of-rehearsal work in order to perfect marching and playing skills. Running and swimming in high school (and even, gasp, in the tender years of middle school) I had plenty of extra workouts at 5 am, so of which actually were mandatory. In my opinion, this goes back to the whole "OMG athletes have easy classes" stuff the Ann Arbor News gave us last year. Clearly with college football being treated as a minor league of sorts (as Brian pointed out last year) you are going to have a lot of tension with the academic side of things. While it's important to protect student athletes, at the same time people need to realize that it's very nearly impossible to excel at any university where atheltics and academics are equally intense. The individual student-athletes, being grown ups now, need to choose their own priorities and manage their time accordingly, understanding the rewards and losses of their actions.

WHEN Marice Clarett made his accusations against Ohio state and everybody scoffed at him because his credibility was low... but one sports writer (prominent said it rang true, and was backed up with facts... i also heard inside information, that I believe to be true... Clarett made some poor decisions but he first tried to protect Ohio State, and was considered evasive when questioned. Only when Ohio State abandoned him did he retaliate by sqealing... Ohio state got away with one... Whats up with USC, the fab five got dragged thru the mud, and the Reggie BUsh deal is so obvious and they still get away with it... money and such is a severe violation. If Michigan gets punished beyond probation, I give a one finger salute to Ohio State, USC, and NCAA. Spare me neqative points, last time i earned 25 minus, and I did deserve it.

“It was mandatory,” one player said. “They’d tell you it wasn’t, but it really was. If you didn’t show up, there was punishment. I just felt for the guys that did miss a workout and had to go through the personal hell they would go through.” http://www.freep.com/article/20090829/SPORTS06/90829023\ By this quote the player admits that the coaches said they were not mandatory. Now the question is whether the players that came to the voluntary workouts were rewarded by not having to do extra, or were the ones that skipped the voluntary stuff punished and forced to do more. Also I guarantee that every football program from high school on up have "voluntary" workouts that you better be there or else. It is my opinion that some players did not like the intensity of the workouts or something of that nature.

We have had practice for my flag-football team here in Chicago. They're "voluntary" but if you don't show up, you don't know the plays, and it's harder for you to be successful, ala no footballs thrown your way. Sure it's not mandatory, but I'm gonna show up unless I have to work (like today). That said, if you wanna succeed, show up. If you don't give a damn, then don't show up and don't complain, b/c others want it more than you do and they're gonna do everything to get it.

Dont forget to pick up the Free Press tomorrow for the next shocking headline: "Underage Drinking Prevalent on UM campus." This is groundbreaking stuff. I hear some of them are even having *gasp* sex out of wedlock. Thank God we have the Free Press to bring these shocking revelations to light.

Like most, I'm assuming, this first gave me a moment of panic. But, as ably pointed out by Brian and others, this thing is becoming more and more laughable the more any sane person looks at it. I have a good buddy who is a senior guy at CNN (granted, it's not a sports organization) but he said the whole thing just seems to ring hollow...a non-story...something not adding up...really bad reporting...etc. In any event, as the day has gone on and I've talked myself off the ledge, I've noticed that the "story" hasn't even really appeared on the crawls. I guess real news organizations took a look and disected this pretty quickly for what it is. Oh yeah...and now I'm PISSED! The timing of this is so transparent.
