So it's a week before the first game and the entire podcast is about stuff 50-100 years ago?

My initial thought as well.
Maybe no one wants to speak of the possible impending doom of 2021? I can make a strong case this teams doesn’t finish above .500 with a healthy losing streak to end the year.
I want to see McNamara and if he really is a true passing threat. Hoping the coaching staff realizes Haskins has to be the workhorse.
Afraid of the defense in general. Hope they can make a few stops but that defensive line doesn’t look promising.

You're being way too negative. Michigan is more talented than all but one team on our schedule, and although a couple of those "mildly" less talented teams might beat us (Wisconsin, Penn State, Washington, Indiana) I don't think they all will and outside of those 5 games, we should be decent favorites. I think we'll have a pretty good team, with an 8-4 prediction and I think 9-3 is more likely than 6-6. Sub-.500 would take a ton to go wrong.
Also, like, it's a week before the season starts. Isn't it more fun to say "can't wait, I think we'll be good!" than "ugh we'll probably suck anyway."?

If you don't value ancient Michigan football history more than current Michigan football then you're not a real Michigan fan. /s

This is and has been the new normal.

Let’s reiterate that Ft. Harbaugh gave MGoBlog almost nothing to work with.
Append that to an aborted season after an offseason of almost no coaching, and the best data Seth had to work with is from 2019. As long as we’ve only got ancient history, might as well go full ancient history. Speaking of which:

I appreciate the honesty but we gotta work on your marketing skills, brah.

Historian, a scholarly lawyer, and a media relations dude that just let the conversation go where it went. I guess it was bound to happen.

Well it's more than a week before the first game. There will be another show next week without Michigan having played a game. I'm sure they'll talk about Western next week. I can't say I really needed to hear more preview, inside the dome rumors. It will just be more of what I've already heard and read.

I hope Brian is OK.

Same. I thought I heard his voice at the start of this podcast and got excited. But no dice.

This is the last roundtable before game week and there is a big ten game in 2 days. Why would anyone picks the topics listed above at this time in the year? This crew is really leaning into the “radio for one” approach.
This is the first roundtable I can recall where I’ve had zero interest in listening. I guess it’s what happens when you have no insider information. I’ll choose something else this week and try again next Thursday. Hopefully the topic isn’t WW2 era assistant coaching salaries.

Sam had to bolt at the last minute, and we were going to do a show on the book, half of which is a preview of the football team. Just so happened that we spent a lot of it on the features. This is why I'm not a radio host.

Don't beat yourself up. I think one of the best features of the roundtable is the Forrest Gump box of chocolates style where you never know where it's going.
I would hate if it became formulaic.

I appreciate it, but I can take criticism as it's intended. This wasn't our best show given the circumstances. Literally my first time in the host's chair. I'll do better in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show and the history lesson. It’s the first time I was ever tempted to forward the link to my sister, a UofM History major. It’s been a looooong off season. It’s OK to go off track a little. We’ve got plenty of time to discuss the 2021 season when the calendar hits September.

I thought it was a great episode - I thought all the detail about the early days of the university and college football was incredibly interesting. I didn't know about any of that (Harvard and U of M were the two biggest universities in the country at one time?! Wild.)

This is mostly on me. I tend to be a walking (well, limping) footnote and like Billy Pilgrim, very stuck in time. My surmise is we will get back to the present next week.
But thanks, JBrand.

Craig, I’m nearing sixty and I think I know more about Michigan’s past than most, but I had never heard of Hubbard until today.
I think he’s perhaps a more worthy topic of discussion than someone that’s never pulled a jersey on yet.
Again, thanks.

Huh. This isn't really meant to be a criticism of the guys who did this week's roundtable (Seth has been almost singlehandedly keeping the blog afloat), but I really miss Brian. Even angsty, BPONE Brian.
