WTKA Roundtable 5/20/2021: You Already Have All the Curses Comment Count

Seth May 20th, 2021 at 11:05 AM

Things discussed:

  • Seth & Craig come on early (Sam is out sick) to talk about sports analytics
  • Softball seeding: Michigan got hosed, the Big Ten got hosed, Washington and the Pac 12 got hosed even worse. Seeding was absurdly SEC-biased.
  • Committee based it on the Big Ten not playing out-of-conference games, punishing the conference for protecting their players during a pandemic.
  • Will this be what finally pushes the northern schools to leave the NCAA and create their own summer league?
  • Would they adapt Bakich’s proposal to make more money? Brian: plausible. Seth: no, because they’re a cartel, and the small schools are driving it.
  • How scholarships work in softball/baseball now.
  • Matt Campbell turned down the Lions, would you?
  • Oregon State DT transfer, and Michigan’s Ravens-like front: will it work?
  • Hockey: Brian crosses fingers that Michigan Hockey Summer leaves us at least three of the four guys about to get drafted.
  • Hoops: Are they a 1 seed? Their floor is really high, a bit on Bufkin.
  • Track is good.
  • Let’s change the field hockey rules.

The Big10 Network is desperate for summer programming. Moving B10 baseball to the summer seems like a natural fit, unless you prefer watching J Leman dissect the Illinois-OSU football game from 2003 Zapruder style.

Today on BTN is the Rutgers spring game sandwiched between a bunch of Rutgers Classic Football games. I’d rather watch live baseball and softball games.

Link to a story (Detroit News) about the baseball proposal.

I will point out that the Houston Astros play home games in July and August.  Some of them are even day games.  I think Omaha will be managable in July.  And...I'll point out that, effectively, the stadium in Omaha is MLB quality.  I'm thinking they probably have air conditioned clubhouses.

An additional thing that I think is helpful, is the schedule.  Most schools are in session in February, but not in late May/early June.  So moving games from February to that time period is better for the students academically because they will travel less.

About the only group that stands to lose are the summer baseball leagues for NCAA players.

Oklahoma's coach did not seem to be thrilled that their road to the CWS goes through one of Washington or Michigan, thinking (among other things) Washington got hosed with their seeding and that Michigan should have been seeded.
