WTKA Roundtable 2/4/2021: Great Kid, Don't Get Cocky
Signing Day and the DTs
- Rayshaun Benny: lolsparty, but even five-star DTs don’t
- Most DTs play end in high school, Benny played mostly OT
- Ravens front: take the 5-2 and change the names
- Sam takes credit for seeing Alan Branch first, playing fullback in New Mexico.
- What does this mean for Michigan State recruiting? Two highest rated recruits in their class got poached.
- Scouting OL: the Kalis problem.
Basketball things
- Michigan State-Iowa had ten guys playing 10 minutes or more. MSU can’t get to the rim.
- Is Michigan going to suffer from a layoff hangover?
- The Iowa question: can you be good if you don’t play defense?
- Brian doesn’t get why we’re opening restaurants for sick people and shutting down health athletic teams: security theater?
- Seth: Baylor and Gonzaga may be the best teams but Michigan’s schedule is so tough they might deserve the top one seed.

1. Thanks, guys. It's impressive how much you all cover.
2. A personal note, I was going to quit once I got 12345 points cuz that seemed a great mic drop moment. (Plus — shh — it's my password.)
BUT when I commented on UM's overall excellence, my point total blew past 12345. So I guess I'm staying.

i'm sure we could get a few folks to neg you back to 12345

How Harbaugh not only held this class together but closed strong at a position of need is remarkable. All with a staff in flux and pitchforks in the media. Truly impressive.

I hadn't really thought about ankle flexion before but Sam said it's just whether a guy can squat and keep his heels on the ground. I could be wrong but that seems insane to me. Sometimes you hear it called the Asian squat, but Slavic squat also comes up the same. Frankly though basically anyone can do it. It's not something you're born with. I can do it, presumably because I do yoga a decent amount. Just seemed crazy to me if that's why you wouldn't recruit a kid when it seems like something you can do with some practice stretching. I guess some people may naturally be less flexible, or it may take some people longer to get the flexibility, but I'd be surprised if this is something that can't be achieved for like 99% of normal human beings.
February 5th, 2021 at 11:42 AM ^
can be done by most. is called a 'prison squat' or 'gangster squat'.
February 5th, 2021 at 12:20 PM ^
Can you do it at 300 pounds?
February 5th, 2021 at 6:36 PM ^
Yes. It's not a question of weight. That's a resting position.

This was taped before the Iowa loss to OSU, but Iowa didn't look great in the Big Ten even before that and Brian is talking about Fran as the B1G coach of the year Sure, they're 4th on Kenpom...and in the B1G standings. Still gotta win the games.
February 5th, 2021 at 9:07 AM ^
He should not get coach of the year with the #834 defense in the nation. Unless he was the coach of Saginaw Valley State with that defense then maybe.
February 5th, 2021 at 10:50 AM ^
Brian seems to have forgotten about Franbruary.
February 5th, 2021 at 10:06 AM ^
I know we've talked about Iowa doing the "we'll try to outscore you and not worry about defense" before, but there's absolutely no way this works anymore in college basketball considering the top-3 teams per KenPom each have top-10 offenses AND top-10 defenses. Like, you aren't going to be able to run away from any of those teams offensively and there's a good chance they'll give you some trouble on defense.

Alan Branch won Superbowl LI on this date in 2017... tho he was built a lot more like Alan Treetrunk by then.
February 5th, 2021 at 10:41 AM ^
Iowa played a fantastic game offensively last night. They shot 44% from three, had 4 guys in double figures, and still got beat by the buckeyes. Defense does indeed matter

Brian doesn’t get why we’re opening restaurants for sick people
a little dramatic don’t you think? This blogs new found lack of political self control makes it tougher to read every day. I miss the old days.

I was a little confused there as well. Only an idiot would eat a hamburger at Applebees but get the kids back out to play basketball for our amusement.
February 5th, 2021 at 11:13 AM ^
Since the Mgobloggers use the name "Space Backer" as the generic grab-all for different teams' hybrid-types, and our defense is under new management, maybe we should honor our aerospace heritage and call them, "Space, B!tches, Space-backers"? Just a thought.

I remember Alan Branch..........he is still large.
February 5th, 2021 at 12:09 PM ^
Sam bragging about seeing Alan Branch first reminds me that Alan drove from New Mexico for Michigan's football camp.
I wish I could remember the make and model - it was something tiny. I was in his group and when he mentioned how he got there we all reacted like wait..you fit in that car?
February 5th, 2021 at 12:20 PM ^
I appreciate the inclusion of the off air commentary.
February 5th, 2021 at 5:18 PM ^
Dear God. Mute your mic when coughing.

I chuckled quietly to myself when Craig vocalized the recruiting website as "two forty-seven"
