WTKA Roundtable 10/14/2021: My Cheap Tricks and Yours Comment Count

Seth October 14th, 2021 at 10:41 AM

Things discussed:

  • Nebraska: They’re a good team. Great defensive line. Was this the gutsiest win by Michigan under Harbaugh? Have to give credit to Nebraska for shooting themselves in the foot.
  • Cade Talk: Sam asks when we go with McCarthy, Seth is on Team McNamara because he’s got a high floor, and maybe that’s what you need when you have a good defense and good players around you. Brian says McCarthy should be the redzone guy.
  • Offense: Playing better to their strengths. Tight ends had a great day vs not Wisconsin LBs, running backs won the game, Cade wasn’t that great but he was steady. TE leak.
  • Note user Dragonchild’s diary about how Michigan is using less split zone and associated plays. They’re a good power team. Cade is a good 5-wide guy. They can run both out of the same personnel.
  • Defense: Worried about the cornerbacks. Gray and Turner had BAAAAD pass interferences and that’s not going to work vs Ohio State.
  • Michigan State? Quarterback play and two good receivers are real—the run game might be an effect of playing very bad run defenses but respect is due. Seth: These are all just college football teams. Michigan/MSU/Iowa/Nebraska…not that much separates these teams.
  • Hockey Talk: This team can score at will on the power play, additions are great, have a lot more age than people realize. Portillo gives up too many soft rebounds but that was 1/4.
  • Jett: Big recruiting win—Howard showed he can pull a guy out of IMG *AND* make him clean his room. Versatile player, closest recent comp is Franz? Needs a left.

You guys are the ones dwelling 24-7 on these issues. Maybe--who knows--you also have some insight about what the thinking is inside the football brain trust that's guiding these comments.

But I would still be very surprised if--barring a serious Cade collapse--JJ takes a leading role this season. To me, him running backward and fumbling late game Saturday was a sign of how radically sideways things could go.

Obviously, Cade needs to hit the long ball in upcoming games. But he did it in games one to five.

Not sure why some are calling for a QB change?  This team is 6-0 and Cade is playing well. If it’s not broken don’t fix it. Cade is leading this team to wins and not making stupid mistakes. JJ will get his chance one day but for now this team is rolling with Cade stick with it

Jett will resemble Franz on offense in terms of role, but I would expect Jett to be more versatile as a scorer, particularly in 1 on 1 situations. Jett's higher floor there could also make way for improvement in areas Franz never did (left hand, attacking the basket aggressively, etc.). The shot is a concern though, and some streakiness reminiscent of Franz seems likely. Jett has a quicker trigger however, which could be good or bad. Defensively, I don't see Jett as a difference maker, especially with the likelihood of him having to play the 2 and 3. He should still be a decent defender though.

Regarding the number/name changes...

Bring back jerseys with "Equality", "BLM", etc. on the back instead of names. Make sure they have the same word/phrase. Change McCarthy's and McNamara's numbers to be the same. Profit.

looking at games for week 8, there are three top tier, ranked matchups (UGA/FLA, OSU/PSU, and ours against MSU). If memory serves, UGA/FLA is a late afternoon game. Hopefully we can repeat scheduling for 2016 in which we played at noon, then OSU/PSU was at night.

I mention this only because Craig Ross (C-Ro in some circles) rightly pointed out that MSU could be at night. Hopefully (although unlikely) networks look at our schedule of night away games and realize they have a way better chance at selling pickups to Bucknuts and Happy Valley farmers than a bunch of Michiganders disrespekting each other.

IMHO, MSU/UM as a top ten matchup is the better game than OSU/PSU especially if Clifford is still injured.  MSU/UM should be the BIG NOON game. Crossing fingers and legs and hoping it is so.

The corners have improved, and there's not going to be an emergence of someone else at this point (unless there are injuries).  Mixing of coverages, alignments, and blitz packages to keep opponents off balance will be key.

How rich, staee fans calling out M roundtable on a U of M station in AA on AM. Of being mean lol. I guess they have never listened to the two Sparties Mike and Rico on a major Detroit Sports Station on FM. I have a family member MSU alumni. So occasionally I'm forced to listen to these idiots. Go Blue too.
