Michigan Offers Vic Enwere And Jhonny Williams Comment Count

Brandon Brown

Contrary to popular perception recruiting is not over. The Michigan coaches have offered 2014 prospects RB Vic Enwere and DE Jhonny Williams.

Vic Enwere

Vic Enwere

Position: Running Back
Ht/Wt: 6'1"/215 lbs.
Location: Fort Bend Austin High School – Missouri City, TX
Class: 2014
Offers: Committed to California, Arkansas State, Colorado, Duke, Houston, Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas State, LA Lafayette, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, North Texas, Rice, Sam Houston State, SMU, Texas State, Tulsa, Utah, Virginia, Wake Forest

Enwere is a big back with a pretty large, but not powerhouse-studded, offer list. He does hold an offer from the Spartans and they seem to do pretty well at uncovering lowly-rated, highly productive running backs.

Enwere is currently committed to Cal but it’s a soft commitment at best. He spoke with the Michigan coaches on Thursday about how he’d fit in to the offensive scheme and also about setting up a possible visit in the near future. Enwere told me that receiving an offer from Michigan was a big deal and that he was honored. In talking to him it was pretty clear that the Michigan offer has thrown a wrench into his thought process. I asked him what the Michigan offer meant to his commitment to Cal and he said, “I’m really not sure. I am definitely considering Michigan now that they are a real option.” As a Texas kid, committed to Cal he cited Michigan’s storied history as the first thing that attracted him to the Maize and Blue. He also said that a flip from Cal to Michigan is possible, but he just has to really evaluate all of his options now that the Wolverines are in the picture.

Jhonathon Williams

Jhonny Williams

Position: Defensive End
Ht/Wt: 6'6"/230 lbs.
Location: Berrien Springs High School – Berrien Springs, MI
Class: 2014
Offers: Committed to Missouri, Ball State, Bowling Green, Notre Dame, San Diego State, Toledo

The Michigan coaches wasted no time extending an offer to Williams once Da’Shawn Hand committed to Alabama. Williams is an in-state product with some non-power conference offers plus Notre Dame and the program he’s currently committed to, Missouri. On film Williams is quite impressive but Berrien Springs doesn’t exactly play top competition.  Regardless of who he plays against though, you can see his athleticism and his size is impressive as well.

Williams wasn’t shy about being excited to hear from Michigan for the first time just recently when we first spoke. After receiving his offer, Jhonny texted me last night with a very respectful message as he sorts through his options.

I’m not ready to comment on the recent events. I’ll let you know my thoughts when I gather them. I need time. Thank you.

He didn’t hide the fact that he’s juggling some thoughts now that Michigan has offered and I expect the Wolverines to get some consideration. Missouri has done very well this season and should continue to improve with some promising young talent on the roster, but Jhonny’s latest offer must carry some weight to stir up his mind that way. He’s been committed to Mizzou since late September so it will be interesting to see what he says in the coming weeks.

Some attrition was inevitable.  UM's RB group is stocked with guys who were back-burner targets.  For example, Hayes, Rawls, and Johnson were all Plan C, place-holder guys.  Now with the '13 class and beyond, the staff is back in the game with legit RB's again.

We are going to see the same deal at WR next year, where it's likely that some of the '13 recruits are going to find themselves buried by '12 and '14 WR's.

Every year there are late bloomers...guys who may have sat behind a highly touted guy, were injured during summer caps, or just matured late and had a stellar senior year of HS.

You have any guys like that who fit this decription and Michigan may be looking at in the coming months?

It's been a strange recruiting cycle. Things really slowed down for Michigan during the season. These two offers to Enwere and Williams are the first 2014 kids they've offered in several months, IIRC. On that front, there's not much new news that I've seen or heard regarding sleeper prospects.

Williams and Enwere were two guys popping up on the radar a lot in recent weeks, and so has Niles (IL) Notre Dame RB Chris James.

It has been strange...this has been the most "dead" of a season in terms of recruiting I've ever seen at Michigan. Even last year when we had a big class committed before our season started you still had some news throughout the fall.

This year there hasn't been anything except a revelation that Ballage was back in the mix. Everything else was just waiting for Hand and McDowell. I suppose the Glenville kids a little bit, but I don't think anyone thinks we'll land them anymore than P. Westphal, J. Smith, or A. Jackson.

Now that Hand is out, I'd really like to see us start at the top of the recruiting board and start going at higher rated guys regardless of position. Just leave one spot for that and maybe due to a coaching change or something you can land a 5* player. Like Tommy Schutt and OSU, he just fell into their laps.

Go after some of these guys, give them something to think about and you never know. Mack Brown could get fired/retire. Saban could leave. Muschamp could leave or get fired. Sumlin could leave. Whatever. It would be good to not be jumping in the mix at the last second when every other school is jumping in the mix. That was one way we got Ross Douglas, we'd already recruited him.

Regardless, rather than leave one spot for one player. Now that Hand is gone, I'd leave one spot for 20-30 players and hope I hit on one of them - regardless of position.

To the recruiting gurus, are we still in the running for Colorado RB Kellen Ballage?  Who else do we have a real shot at?  I know that two months ago, we were dreaming of Hand, McDowell and perhaps even Juju Smith.  So much so that we dropped Montae Nicholson.  The two Glenville duo, is that even a possibility?

I'm curious about Nicholson and Westphal.  Did Michigan back off of them because they were expecting Hand and McDowell or did Michigan just decide they didn't want them?  If the latter, did Michigan cool on them because of perceived ability or academics/character?  Probably, no one but the coaching staff knows this, but I am often curious about these sorts of things.

Would the coaches now consider offering Lucien-South (I can never remember how to spell his name) for 2015?  Much to speculate about...  And the speculation is probably best kept to a minimum--these are high school kids we're always talking about with recruiting.  So maybe I shouldn't even bring it up...

Keisean Lucier-South is who you're thinking of. I'm guessing he'll get an offer sooner or later, but I'm not sure that Da'Shawn Hand has/had anything to do with it. Obviously, the coaches are going after Jhonny Williams, so it's not like they're just going to ignore DE in 2014 and then try to make up for it in 2015.

Supposedly, some questions arose about Nicholson's football abilities. And I get the feeling that Michigan's coaches got tired of waiting for Westphal to decide, got Peppers and Watson, and moved on from him. I don't think they wanted another Jordan Diamond/LaQuon Treadwell situation.
