Michigan Offers Vic Enwere And Jhonny Williams Comment Count

Brandon Brown

Contrary to popular perception recruiting is not over. The Michigan coaches have offered 2014 prospects RB Vic Enwere and DE Jhonny Williams.

Vic Enwere

Vic Enwere

Position: Running Back

Ht/Wt: 6'1"/215 lbs.

Location: Fort Bend Austin High School – Missouri City, TX

Class: 2014

Offers: Committed to California, Arkansas State, Colorado, Duke, Houston, Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas State, LA Lafayette, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, North Texas, Rice, Sam Houston State, SMU, Texas State, Tulsa, Utah, Virginia, Wake Forest

Enwere is a big back with a pretty large, but not powerhouse-studded, offer list. He does hold an offer from the Spartans and they seem to do pretty well at uncovering lowly-rated, highly productive running backs.

Enwere is currently committed to Cal but it’s a soft commitment at best. He spoke with the Michigan coaches on Thursday about how he’d fit in to the offensive scheme and also about setting up a possible visit in the near future. Enwere told me that receiving an offer from Michigan was a big deal and that he was honored. In talking to him it was pretty clear that the Michigan offer has thrown a wrench into his thought process. I asked him what the Michigan offer meant to his commitment to Cal and he said, “I’m really not sure. I am definitely considering Michigan now that they are a real option.” As a Texas kid, committed to Cal he cited Michigan’s storied history as the first thing that attracted him to the Maize and Blue. He also said that a flip from Cal to Michigan is possible, but he just has to really evaluate all of his options now that the Wolverines are in the picture.

Jhonathon Williams

Jhonny Williams

Position: Defensive End

Ht/Wt: 6'6"/230 lbs.

Location: Berrien Springs High School – Berrien Springs, MI

Class: 2014

Offers: Committed to Missouri, Ball State, Bowling Green, Notre Dame, San Diego State, Toledo

The Michigan coaches wasted no time extending an offer to Williams once Da’Shawn Hand committed to Alabama. Williams is an in-state product with some non-power conference offers plus Notre Dame and the program he’s currently committed to, Missouri. On film Williams is quite impressive but Berrien Springs doesn’t exactly play top competition.  Regardless of who he plays against though, you can see his athleticism and his size is impressive as well.

Williams wasn’t shy about being excited to hear from Michigan for the first time just recently when we first spoke. After receiving his offer, Jhonny texted me last night with a very respectful message as he sorts through his options.

I’m not ready to comment on the recent events. I’ll let you know my thoughts when I gather them. I need time. Thank you.

He didn’t hide the fact that he’s juggling some thoughts now that Michigan has offered and I expect the Wolverines to get some consideration. Missouri has done very well this season and should continue to improve with some promising young talent on the roster, but Jhonny’s latest offer must carry some weight to stir up his mind that way. He’s been committed to Mizzou since late September so it will be interesting to see what he says in the coming weeks.

Not true, the offensive side of the ball has the most upside. Al Borges not only has a huge Playbook, he also can scheme up plays better than anyone ever. Some people even referred to him as a "Mad Scientist".
Also Mattison is overrated. He only had success here because of Moeller's recruits, and at Florida he rode Charlie Strongs coat tails.

People really do say this stuff

"Borges said in a presser shortly after the OSU game that he "sometimes throws away plays to see what the D will do".......It worked, we saw!  Borges is a slow learner.  He threw away half of the plays in the game.  But, we did find out exactly what the D did...kickek our butt's......so learned somether there...uhhhgggg.  In mystifies me as to why he wouldn't play that last 1:30 of the 1st half....Perhaps he needed to pee and was in a hurrey to get to the bathroom......Sending him a box of depends may help him finish out the half, what a waste!"

That will probably tell you all you need to know. Intelligent analysis at its finest. And a pretty pink to boot.

Outside of these two and McDowell...who are the other guys realistically on the board? Realistic guys, not "JuJu Smith and Adoree Jackson - gonna have a Michigan hat on the table, but never was coming to Michigan" type guys.

Appoximately how many spots do we have available?

Are there any guys that AREN'T on the board right now that we should look out for? Anyone like Montae Nicholson that could get back into the mix now that Hand is out. (I know they played different positions, but it was clear that Hand spot was reserved for Hand and Hand only. The thought process is that maybe now we'll take the best player available regardless of position).

I think it's pretty clear that Enwere and Williams are very realistic options at this point since they were just offered.

McDowell is going to be in play but I think he's less likely now more than ever. In fact at this point I don't think he'll come to Michigan, I'm just unsure of where it might be for him. If I had to guess it would be OSU, MSU, or Bama possibly. Somewhere in the south.

I'm going to have to start digging a little bit back into the 2014 targets now that Hand is off the board and McDowell is not a lock anymore. (not he was ever necessarily a lock)

The class currently sits at 15 members and I think Brady Pallante may actually get the scholarship offer this year instead of being a greyshirt for next years class with how numbers look now. It looks as if the class may finish with about 16-18 prospects.

Is a close friend of mine.  Plays his cards pretty close to the vest.  His favorite D-1 team is Army, since he played football while in the Army. Dad is about 5-11 and 225 of solid muscle.  Jhonny gets his height from his mom.

Whole family has a great deal of integrity, which concerns me.  In other words, i'd be a bit surprised if they didn't honor the verbal committment to Mizzou

So what you're saying is, a current high school kid was aware of Michigan's history in football even though this blog's board would have you believe he is too young to remember last time Michigan was relevant.

How does that work?!?!

I dont think anyone is saying a UM offer doesnt get respect.  UM is on TV, regional or national, every week.   They are in a group of 8-12 schools that every person who watches college football knows about.  These are mid level type recruits and UM (and ND in one case) immediately go to the top of their list of schools that recruited them in terms of brand.  That is what UM still has ...brand.  That is fine.  No one is disputing that no one knows about UM brand or that history doesn't help.  In fact it might be the only thing right now supporting the program as the coaching acumen is in question at some levels and the on field results have been largely mediocre for a long stretch.

And the longer this goes, the worse this becomes because right now there are a bunch of 10-15 year olds who aside from that 1 Sugar Bowl appearance have not seen UM be relevant nationally in the part of their lifecycle where they actually follow college football closely.  But yes it will always have a brand just as Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Notre Dame, OSU, Alabama have.

If not for history, right now UM's on field product is akin to say a Texas Tech or Ole Miss without the weather or hot chicks everywhere.

Several months ago, Enwere was listed with a Michigan offer on one of the sites (Rivals or 247, I can't remember). Then it was confirmed that the news of an offer was miscommunication, but regardless, Michigan has been in Enwere's ear for a while.

Personally, I wonder if the coaches thought that pulling in Da'Shawn Hand might give them a little more of a shot at Leonard Fournette (you know, gathering elite talent like Hand, Peppers, Fournette, etc.). Once Hand committed to Alabama, then the coaches may have ditched all thought of getting Fournette and started looking for Plan B options.

Of course, there are also rumors about transfers in the offensive backfield - and I'm not talking about Evil Ace - so that might have something to do with it, too.

Thomas Rawls and Justice Hayes?  (Pure speculation; but considering how little they've been used this year, could you blame either of them for wanting to move on, especially if their major reason for enrolling at Michigan -- or just going to college -- was to play football, and not to necessarily walk at graduation in The Big House?)
