Matthew Hibner Has Committed To Michigan Comment Count

Brian June 9th, 2019 at 8:48 PM

Michigan's picked up a tight end commit:

Hibner is currently a deep sleeper ranked 1016th on 24/7 with a barely three-star ranking on Rivals and no ESPN profile. His offer list is more encouraging; he picked up a camp offer from Virginia Tech that kicked off a selection of regional offers including NC State, Georgia Tech, Maryland, and Pitt. He was about to camp at Clemson.

More Monday.

Wonder what this means for Theo Johnson.

BTW--has anyone noticed that 247 doesn't seem to be updating the statis logos even if the info is correct on the player page?   Khalil Branum is still listed with an M and Justin Rodgers still has us as "warm" even though he's committed to Kentucky..

247 just posted this:

https://247sports.com/college/michigan/Article/Michigan-Wolverines-2020-recruiting-updates-analysis-132734525/

The article actually has several interesting facts about TE recruiting this cycle, but I know posting insider content is discouraged for good reasons, so I will just pass along a single line:

Michigan is not done at tight end, with four-star Theo Johnson far and away their top remaining target at the position.

Deep sleeper is good. If the coaching staff saw enough in him to offer him a commutable scholarship, I’m gonna assume he’s someone that’ll breakout and rise pretty quickly. I’m excited about him, VaTech and Pitt don’t offer dudes that aren’t tough. I also don’t think this’ll mean anything for Theo Johnson. I always viewed Johnson as Funchess-lite where he’s athletic enough to be flexed out and featured out wde

Michigan now has 10 commitments and only 1 of them is in the top 247. And people wonder why Harbaugh is 0-fer against OSU and 1-9 against top 10 teams.

Nobody wonders that, most realize the team doesn't have top10 talent yet, but we're still gonna give some appreciation and offer a warm welcome to any player who commits to help turn it around.

So UofM will do it like Clemson, not a problem.

And you'll still be Mazien.

I've been saying the same thing and I get negged on 247. I'm just stating facts. We have to recruit better to win big games against big talent. People want you to sugarcoat the facts  can't hide from the truth if you wanna win.

Not sure if your understanding of college football has hit some sort of Arrested Development ....bhahaha .....but ......

Clemson had FIVE players rated LOWER than Hibner in their 2015 and '16 classes, right before their FIRST championship.

Don't let Dora and the estrellas fool you, you need top150 talent but you also need to go find great players the recruiting services couldn't.

After the 2014 season, his 5th, Dabo was 2-7 in his last 9 against his "rivals"and had lost games in the previous three years by scores of: 70-33.....51-14.......and 45-21.

Up into that point, he was 5-11 against FSU, USC and Vtech in his "HC" career!

And he was 9-16 in top25 match ups.

So with an extra year as head coach plus with 20 years in college coaching, Dabo had a worse record against top teams than Harbaugh at the same point in their tenures; that means you have no clue as to what Harbaugh can do.

And what did those guys ranked below Hibner end up doing?

I found 8 guys not ranked in Clemson's 2015 and 2016 classes. 2 guys transferred to the FCS level, 3 are essentially 20-25 snap a game guys as juniors (maybe the 2-deep), 1 is a special teams guy only, 1 looks like he transferred and quit football, and 1 is all Honorable Mention ACC (K'von Wallace).

Are these the "great players the recruiting services" couldn't find you were speaking about?

Well there are always exceptions. I know nothing about the Renfrow's recruiting history, but I would bet he wasn't offered his preferred walk on the summer before his senior year.

I generally trust the staff on this stuff as they just have so much more information to make a decision. And if they think this guy is going to blow up this summer and now is the time, so be it. But there's game theory at play here. You can get unrated generic 3 stars / PWOs much closer to signing day. You don't need to pull the trigger on them this early.

How about this:

Three days after UofM offered David Ojabo he was #1003 on the composite, that was April before his senior year or two months more than they have on Hibner.

He finished at #314.

Charbonnet, Giles Jackson, and Sainristil all had similar rises.

Obviously Sherrone Moore wanted Hibner to be a Wolverine irrespective of his placement in the standard deviation of star ranking, and me and Dax Hill say that's good enough for me.

Mich leading or on the top list of many high ranking guys. Top guys commit on their own timeline and the biggest summer recruiting weekends are upon us.

UM in the top group or outright leader for...

4* RB: B Corum

4* TE:  Theo Johnson

 4* WR:  AJ Henning

 4* S:  M Green

4* DE: A Powell

4* DB: RJ Moten

Viper W Mohan is the highest of 3*. He doesn't need a bump for 4* he needs a nudge.

These are just a few off the top of my head.

I'll respond to you, because you're clearly not a troll, and someone that I feel deserves a bit more of an explanation on this class. Because it's easy to say it's "not as impressive", without looking into it a bit more.

Of the 10 recruits, I fully expect one of them to be processed, and not end up at Michigan.

McGregor is a legit 5 star talent. Seldon is a little undersized, so that'll naturally put a cap on his ranking until he grows a bit. But he's a stud.

Zinter doesnt play against great competition, so he's someone that will rise this summer on the camp circuit.

JD Johnson has limited experience, so he's someone that will probably rise up the rankings after his senior year.

Hibner is incredibly underscouted, so don't take his ranking into play at all. Difference between a low recruit in December and a low recruit in June.

The St Frances kids will camp a ton this summer, and could go either way. It's a solid class so far, with a ton of top talent leaning towards Michigan.

Of the 9 players I fully expect to sign with Michigan, I think 6 of them end up in 4 star territory, with Hibner being a high 3 star, possibly low 4. It's a good class, but Michigan will close strong. Trust me.

Actually, you couldn't be more wrong.

Securing Braiden McGregor 's commitment, even with the Benedict Mattison coaching change, was VERY impressive. If he went to ND or followed GMatt to OSU THAT would've been disaster. Plus the fact that Nua not only didn't lose his commitment but also impressed Braiden with the change in energy from the whole Dline group, that bodes well for a great year from that unit. And the best part is that he and his family are big supporters and he really wanted to be a Wolverine, maybe will get a run of high ranked state of Michigan players that really want to GoBlue!

Andre Seldon has also been quite impressive, as both a camp participant and a "commit recruiter". He's the exact type of "slot pirate" the D needs to counter act the slot ninjas that killed them in Columbus. Plus he's helping a lot with the metro recruiting, especially Belleville.

Zinter is probably top 100 as a guard plus he's from the Don Brown pipleline. Sounds good!

Three dudes from one of the best high school programs in the country, establishing a pipeline right next to Alabama ..nuff said.

Impressive they got a re-confirm on JD Johnson's commitment, even though Pep was his recruiter; really important since he's a strong recruiter as well and the mountain west region has some big-time players coming out the next few years.

Wheeler is a top500 in state player from a program they need better results from, not bad at all .......and if that helps land Edwards next cycle than it's very impressive again.

And Mineral King's bro is alright with me, especially since he just got a Yale offer!

Hibner is 6'4" 230 and can enroll at Harvard if he so chooses, THAT'S not impressive?

I bet what will be extremely impressive is how Gattis, Nua and Campanelle close even with short time.
