Hoops Recruiting Wants To Land A Centerpiece
With Hunter Dickinson already testing the draft waters and Moussa Diabate having one-and-done potential, Michigan is absolutely taking a true center in the 2022 class. The Wolverines are firmly in the mix for a few elite bigs and starting to explore other options as the upcoming live evaluation periods in July are quickly approaching. The full rundown at the center position below.
The Best Bet
Top-50 center Donovan Clingan is set to hit Ann Arbor for an official visit on June 11th. Michigan is in good position here and one-on-one time with Juwan Howard going into full detail with regard to Clingan's fit in the Wolverine offense can only improve that position.
Donovan is also slated to take OVs to Syracuse, Ohio State and UConn, with Kentucky putting out a feeler earlier this week. The Huskies will also get an unofficial visit in the aftermath of the trip to Ann Arbor. The visits are undoubtedly indicative of the serious players in this recruitment, but functionally this a two-horse race between the Wolverines and UConn.
In speaking with multiple sources in the last week, Juwan Howard has made up a ton of ground with Clingan. So much so, that this a true 50/50 battle. But Donovan taking two visits to UConn within a two week period speaks volumes about where the Huskies stand as well. Clingan's official trip to Michigan will go a long way in determining our standing moving forward. If we know anything about Juwan Howard though, he absolutely resonates with prospects and their respective families in a way that few college coaches can. It's closing time.

A Blueblood Affair
I was first to tout 7-footer Dereck Lively as a 5-star level prospect in April and Rivals agrees, bumping him to a top-15 overall prospect. And with his impressive performances this Spring, Dereck's stock on the recruiting trail has exploded. Official visits have been scheduled to North Carolina, Kentucky and Duke during the month of June.
Kentucky in particular seems to be making a major move here despite the lack of an offer. Lively went in-depth about the fast-developing relationship with John Calipari with Rivals this week:
"He really just tells me about the mindset of being a pro athlete, and being a one and done athlete, and what he could with my game to take it to the next level. It's something that I definitely take into mind and something that I really like hearing."
When I last spoke with Dereck he seemed intent on setting up a visit to Ann Arbor, but that was prior to heavy pursuit from the aforementioned bluebloods. And while he may still schedule an OV to Michigan, it seems as if the Kentucky/Duke/UNC trio are at the forefront of his mind. The big question here is whether Kentucky extends an offer soon, as he may not be the top priority for the Wildcats. And North Carolina just picked up a commitment from a 3-star big. So perhaps a Lively/Michigan marriage is still possible given the context, but things don't appear to be trending well at the moment.
Potential Plan B/C Types
The Michigan staff has been intrigued with 2022 big Dominick Campbell of the Middlesex Magic since watching him take on Donovan Clingan + Team Spartans in late May at the Circuit League event in Dallas.
Campbell is currently unranked, but is experiencing the proverbial blow-up in recent weeks as offers have come rolling in from Notre Dame, Stanford, South Carolina, Minnesota, Virginia Tech, Providence and Penn State all within the last two weeks. I have yet to see him play live, but based on film he has the look of a stretch 4/5 with good footwork and vision while having limited athleticism.
There are some connections here, as Duncan Robinson also played his AAU ball with the Middlesex Magic. This may be one to monitor come July if Clingan fails to commit or give strong indications concerning the same in the aftermath of his official visit.
2022 Javon Adams is a prospect that caught my eye a bit in Hampton at the Southern Jamfest. At 6'10 he displayed some nice ball-skills in the open court along with good athleticism. He's very under-the-radar right now, but recently picked up an offer from Rhode Island. A Pennsylvania native, he's had some very preliminary interest from assistant coach Phil Martelli since late April, but there's nothing serious at the moment. I do like the potential here, as Adams is lengthy athlete with some perimeter skill, but he's clearly a tier below our current offers.
Thanks Matt!
sounds like Lively has cooled a bit with the interest from Kentucky, UNC and Duke....I was really hoping for either him or Clingan...while Clingan still seems promising, you never know.
do you think the Coach K retirement changes Flipowski's decision process at all? I didn't really see him as a one and done prospect, more like 2 years...who knows what Jon Scheyer is going to be...same for Davis.
I don't think Coach K's departure will impact Duke at all. His AAU coach is a former guard at Duke and Filipowski's personality/demeanor is a fit with the program.
And yes, I tend to agree. Kyle is a very intriguing prospect, but I don't necessarily think he's quite one-and-done material.
Flipowski would be a great name for a recruiter. Looks like Matt EM calls him Filipowski though. I like your spelling better.
lol oops...
Dom Campbell looks intriguing but definitely looks like he's carrying some bad weight at the moment
A few questions:
- How is Clingan's endurance? For true 7 footers, I feel like that's something that definitely needs to be taken into account
- Do you have any intel on how UNC and Duke losing their legend coaches is impacting their recruiting abilities? Seems odd to me that Duke and UNC would retain their untouched recruiting prowess after losing their legendary coaches and now have unproven coaches. Like at this point Juwan would be seen as the better coach than Davis/Scheyer
I am also hoping for an update on the effect of Duke/UNC losing legends but I'm sure that Matt won't know too much until he hits the next major weekend event where he can mingle
Personally, I don't think Duke/UNC will suffer at all on the recruiting trail in the immediate future. Those programs are brands, bigger than any particular coach. It would take multiple poor seasons from each for the recruiting chops to suffer.
Those programs are similar to Ohio State in FB, where even when Meyer stepped-down, the train continued to roll.
I think the bigger threat to those schools is the professional option with more and more viable options to earn 6 figures and perhaps 7 (GLeague).
I agree, especially re UNC. UNC's recruiting had even fallen off slightly in recent years and I think Davis will be able to recruit at a similar or better level. UNC was great even before Williams.
Duke is a really strong brand and at the top of the recruiting wars. Duke will still be very strong but it's maybe more interesting since Duke was not really much before coach K. Probably they will be fine but they could definitely fall off the very high perch (at least a bit).
I know it's only two years ,but unc finished 14 and 6 in there division. Then you throw in a new coach you think that would slow down recruiting a little. I just hope it slows down enough we're we get Trimble and he doesn't follow his brothers footsteps.
I get what you're saying, and I agree that their recruiting won't "fall off," but there is a difference between going to play for a legendary coach who has produces numerous championships and NBA players, and going to the same program but for a guy who has proven absolutely nothing. I'm sure Duke has gotten their share of players whose thought process was "I can't pass up playing for Coach K!" That will hurt them at least a little going forward. And if they take even a half step back, that will be used against them. "This isn't Coach K's Duke anymore."
As someone that's probably a bit more privy than others with respect to the Duke situation in particular, I can say that Coach K hasn't been all that active with respect to recruiting in years. Scheyer has been the lead recruiter over there for a bit.
Duke will always have appeal to elite/one-and-done type prospects based on the history of the program. The Blue Devils are essentially the Lakers of CBB. They may be down for a year or two, but regardless of the HC, the name just carries a ton of weight.
You may be correct concerning UNC, as I don't have any inside information to their recruiting practices.
Agreed, Coach K and Roy Williams were very much intertwined with the both schools' respective brand and legacy
It's like the old saying "Defense Travels". So does the Bagman.
Honestly though, I would think UNC and Duke coaching changes could have an impact.
It's crazy how ho hum it's become when M has a top 50 guy coming in now. It's almost like oh not top 25? Just a couple years ago a visit from a top 50 guy would have elicited a parade and confetti. Soak it in, this is a special time.
I wouldn’t say it’s ho-hum at all. Diabate is probably not the norm, and if I read MattEM right we’re in 50-50 battles for our top center options. An oh-fer is not out of the question even if Howard plays his hand perfectly.
It is in much better shape than football (where we’re competing against Army and Vandy for QB recruits), and we got the #1 incoming class; Howard is doing amazing work. But it’s not like Howard revolutionized recruiting. I’ll never like our odds against names like Duke, Kentucky, UNC, or UConn.
Thanks as always Matt, love the write ups.
Lively->Clingan->Campbell it looks like currently, with Adams maybe making his way into the rotation. It's a bummer to hear that Lively is heavily interested in those 3 programs, he would be amazing under Juwan, even for only a year. Hopefully we can get him on campus. My concern is Lively doesn't show interest, Clingan ultimately sticks with UConn, and we might be the odd man out. Feel confident in the staff tho, just PTSD from football
well, there is always the portal. that might be the best option if JH loses out on his first couple choices.
Agree on portal....who in 2020 would have guessed Kessler would be available in the portal after one year? I like getting an under appreciated Campbell type of big, but why the uncertainties of taking an overachiever in high school when you can pick one that proved themselves at a mid-major or lower program.
After all, Calipari had a 20 year career in the NBA, so he knows best /s..... wtf.... one would think that Lively would be saying those things about Juwan... too bad the kid hasn't been paying attention to Dickinson's development, going from an average four star plan B (kessler) to an All-American, and NBA jump after one year.
You are drastically underrated Dickinson as a prospect. He is our 12th ranked prospect EVER on 247 database and 43rd overall. At least one scout said he would have been #1 in the class a decade ago when BIG men were valued higher.
Yeah maybe... I guess it was because we were after Kessler first, and I had preferred Dickinson's game.
Mr. Basketball as well
Calipari not playing in the league and only coaching there for a bit doesnt have much to do with it and is not what that comment is about.
Cal has a tremendous track record of getting guys to the league. He's made it pretty obvious that his strategy is selling guys on and getting them to the league in a year or two and seeing what happens with a tournament run while they are there. If you are a player trying to get to the league, and that is what is most important to you, Coach Cal is a good way to go.
Interesting thing on Campbell... 247 doesn't list his weight... Rivals lists it at 235 which has to be two years old... he looks north of 300 lbs to me. A big boy like Traylor.
Interesting that Calipari is so overtly selling the "one and done" concept.
I'm assuming that Howard doesn't focus quite as much on making a full commitment to the school as Beilein was known to do...but I'd also guess that he's also not being so overt about selling Michigan as a place to come for one year.
Matt, any thoughts on this?
well, for a top 20 guy, i think that is the proper tactic to take.
The bigs listed here have more "project" attached to them than Dickinson. However, I think that Clingman and Lively have ceilings greater than or equal to Hunter.
The true good news is that, here, Juwan and staff know what they are doing.
Does anyone see a resemblance of bad boy's Bill Laimbeer in Clingan ? It would be nice if he has Bill's outside shot too.
