[Jarace Walker/The Clear Priority]

Hoops Recruiting Has The Wing Report Comment Count

Matt EM April 28th, 2021 at 12:04 PM

It was a loaded weekend on the AAU scene, with several high-level events going on at various locations. While I was in Louisville for the Grassroots Showcase, several noteworthy prospects took the court around the country and the relevant news came in abundance.

The final update of this week is dedicated to wings/forwards. The bigs update can be found here and the guard here

Jarace Walker Tentatively Set to Visit

5-star wing/forward Jarace Walker has played things relatively close to the vest with respect to his recruitment, but it appears Michigan is absolutely a legit contender here. In an update with 247, Walker confirms Ann Arbor is on the short list of official visits he plans to take.

"“Probably right now I would choose Florida State, Michigan and North Carolina to take my visits to as of right now."

The other contenders here are obviously the aformentioned Florida State and North Carolina, along with Maryland, Auburn and Virginia Tech.

Having just watched Jarace last weekend, he is number one on my wing/forward board and there is no doubt the staff has him as the priority prospect at that position. He's an instant-impact player at the college level that will be a walking mismatch from the elbow area as both a scorer and playmaker, while being a capable shooter from the perimeter.

Walker is from the DMV-area despite playing for IMG Academy (FL), and the Juwan Howard/Phil Martelli duo has done quite well in that region. Accurate information regarding this recruitment has been hard to come by. But if Michigan is one of only three schools set to get a visit, then one must believe the Wolverines are in a better position in relation to conventional wisdom.

Time Running Short for Gregg Glenn

A few weeks back I was first to report that 4-star forward Gregg Glenn was on the clock and Rivals is reporting the same. While Michigan is still very much near the top of the list based on ties to the Howard family, the "lock" terminology is a bit too strong here given the sheer amount of time that has elapsed without a verbal commitment.

While I like what Glenn brings as a face-up forward with some playmaking ability, I probably like our other options a bit more. If Gregg doesn't drop for the Wolverines relatively soon, he may wait himself out of a committable offer.

AJ Casey Also Looking to Visit

Top-30 wing/forward AJ Casey once again confirms Michigan is firmly in the visit plans for June in an interview with 247 over the weekend.

“I definitely want to get out to Illinois, Michigan, Ohio State, probably Gonzaga, maybe Kansas. My parents and I have talked about getting to as many colleges as possible. I took a visit to Purdue and one to Illinois before they shut everything down.”

Having viewed Casey live in Louisville over the weekend, I absolutely have to walk back my "Casey is quickly moving to the top of my wing/forward board" statement. AJ didn't have his best weekend to put it diplomatically. I took in two games and based on that performance, Jarace Walker is clearly a tier ahead here. I've seen enough of Casey in the past to know last weekend isn't representative of what he is, but it is the most recent datapoint that has to be accounted for.

Still, he's a great athlete with good positional size that appears to be rapidly improving in terms of perimeter skill. The Wolverines appear to be well-positioned here with Ohio State and Illinois the primary competition. Gonzaga, Louisville and Kansas the next tier below.

The Latest on Ty Rodgers

Much like his Meanstreets teammate AJ Casey, it wasn't a great outing for 4-star Ty Rodgers in Louisville. I don't know that he scored more than 8-9 points total in the two games that I viewed live. I've always projected him as face-up PF that scores off bully-ball drives/transition buckets and last weekend cemented that. I didn't see the Saginaw-area native attempt a single jumpshot from either midrange or distance. But there is a lot to like about Rodgers defensively. He has a good combination of size/strength/agility that should make him a versatile defender from day one.

On  recruiting front, Ty told Rivals that Michigan is in heavy pursuit last week.

“Michigan is a great school,” Rodgers said. “Juwan Howard is a great coach. I really like Michigan right now. They are recruiting me really hard. We are just going to keep moving forward. I like how well they run the program. It’s a great culture. I love everything about it."

With the emphasis Juwan Howard places on athleticism and defense, there is a clear role for what Rodgers would potentially bring to the team as a high-motor athlete that generates extra possessions via forced turnovers and offensive rebounds while providing half-court offense in mismatch situations.

Huh....after being pretty high on our wing options I can't say that this was very optimistic at all.  Rodgers & Casey had down weekends and Glenn seems to be sliding as a prospect.  I'm not even sure he actually has a committable offer at this point given where his performance has been in the recent past and the other names on the board.  I presume from a class composition point of view Michigan is a lock to get one wing/forward and probably will keep a second spot available for the right recruit (to go with PG, Jett, and Center).  Glenn and Rodgers don't excite me right now.

I would still be very optimistic about the wing position. Jett is a top 50 player and essentially a lock, then we're in it for Walker, Casey, Rodgers, Glenn, Dailey, Glenn who are all top 100 guys at minimum. We're probably only taking ~2 wings in this class, 1 of them being Jett, so that's only 1 more spot to fill and we're in on plenty of great prospects

These are all guys that would be some of the highest ranked recruits we got under Beilein, its all relative, these are mostly top guys.

I'll be honest that I'm not sure Howard is giving enough appreciation to floor spacing and outside shooting over straight athleticism and highest ceiling, would love to see a couple of guys who are hitting 40% from three already.

I agree with most of what you're saying.  However, I would be pretty skeptical of any rankings right now given the chaos of the last 18 months.  Most of these guys earned their rankings when they were just sophomores and without much basketball in the last 12-15 months it is hard to know whether they are ranked "correctly."

I definitely agree that the key to success is diversity (probably a lesson throughout life but in this case basketball roster management).  Go out and get those 5-star NBA athletes who will be around for a minute but also go get those multi-year players that will continue to develop.  Get the guy who will dunk over anyone....and also the guy that can make open three point jumpers.

I think at the wing position we have an opportunity to be "picky" given Juwan's recruiting success, the fact that we almost certainly have Jett in the class, and the fact that we have program guys in Williams, Barnes, and Tschetter already.

I think you've really hit the hammer on the thumb here.

I mean, who's even heard of this Caleb Houstan kid? Some random Canadian basketball player who is somehow regarded as an elite shooter from the perimeter? No way he'll be any good as a catch and shoot forward or a stretch four.

And no one else from the incoming '21 class has any shooting ability either! Can you believe that!? Bufkin's stroke is certainly not held in high regards by scouts and Tschetter's floor-spacing ability as a PF who can knock down 3s is way overblown. Juwan really messed up in the recruitment cycle for the '21 class it seems.

And of course, it's a pipe dream for UM to even think about landing Jett Howard, one of the quickest risers among perimeter shooting forwards in the '22 class. There is basically no chance he commits to Michigan since there's no connection or relationship with the staff.

You better phone up Juwan and tell him to find some better shooters, and fast.

(All /s in case some people are not catching that joke. User ak47 had a hilariously bad take and this was a fun backhanded comment).

In regards to this position, im not too thrilled with Glenn.  Personally i would rather have Rodgers in a heartbeat.  Very different recruits, different strengths/weaknesses.  I like what Rodgers brings to the table for us.  He would be more like C.Brown for us.

From these three updates, it's pretty obvious JH has taken recruiting to a higher level.  When was the last time UM was in the conversation for so many top-50ish talents?  Fab Five era?

With the new intel about Walker, do you think he's leaning more towards going the college route?

Also, in regards to Glenn, when you say "on the clock" do you mean that the staff basically told him "you have this long to commit or else we're looking elsewhere?"

Glenn is going to wait until its too late and go elsewhere IMO. We probably only have the one spot not counting Jett and personally he's not who I would want with that slot.
