[Flip/New Offer]

Hoops Recruiting Expands The Bigs Board Comment Count

With Hunter Dickinson already testing the draft waters and Moussa Diabate having one-and-done potential, Michigan is absolutely taking a true center in the 2022 class. The Wolverines are firmly in the mix for a few elite bigs and starting to explore other options with new offers and interest in recent days. The full rundown at the center position below.

The Latest on Lively

We're at the time of year where actions carry more weight then words when programs have limited time/resources with multiple events going on simultaneously. Juwan Howard made his first stop of last weekend's live evaluation period in New Jersey to see 5-star Dereck Lively. That said, Dereck Lively is a clear priority at the center position.

Lively dropped his final seven on Friday that consists of Michigan along with Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Penn State, USC and Florida State. Lively hasn't been subtle about Kentucky being a coveted offer and furthered that sentiment with these comments yesterday to Zag's Blog:

“It was a great experience to receive that offer. It was good to finally have that offer so I could release my top 7 and cut down my list.”

Per the same article, Dereck is visiting Duke tomorrow and plans to visit Michigan, USC and Florida State in the fall but I don't necessarily buy it. When a prospect is literally waiting on a single offer to release a final seven, that says a lot. Again, actions>words.

Further, I did my own digging this weekend and word has it that Kentucky feels very strong about their standing in the aftermath of Lively's official visit to Lexington. This one is fading fast, and unless Michigan is able to get Dereck on campus so Juwan Howard can work his magic, the Wolverines are on the outside looking in.

Still In The Hunt

4-star Donovan Clingan was on campus in Columbus over the weekend for an official visit with Ohio State. He's also completed OVs with Michigan and Syracuse. Last Thursday Rivals had a reaction piece with with Poppa Clingan conerning his trip to Ann Arbor and Dad continued to play things close to the vest and may have come off a bit lukewarm:

"Donovan seemed to like it, but if you think he's tight-lipped with you (in the media), he's even more so with me. But it’s only one visit. He has to go to a few, take a look at everything. I feel bad for him, because the poor kid is going to have to tell some people 'no,' and he's built a lot of great relationships. He's such a nice kid."

And while Clingan has already taken an unofficial visit with UConn, he's going to see the hometown school in an official capacity this week. I checked in on things over the weekend, and UConn feels good about their standing here heading into the visit.

The Clingans have played things close throughout the process, so it's hard to get a proper feel for where things are at. Again though, the actions. UConn getting two visits, and the final visit prior to the live evaluation period has to mean something. This is probably a heart versus mind tug-of-war and it still appears to be a 50/50 battle between Michigan and UConn, with Syracuse probably running third.

Probably Not Happening

I was in the Chicago-area over the weekend and assistant coach Howard Eisley was on hand to watch top-80 big Tarris Reed. Not much in the way of evaluation, as Reed and Link Year Academy didn't end up playing the greatest competition. Some of the opposition were without key players while another competitive out-of-state team forfeit a Sunday morning bracket-play game in favor of getting an early start on the drive back home.

On the recruiting front, I checked in with multiple sources and Ohio State absolutely seems like the leader here. I sound like a broken record, but again the actions here say a lot. In my linked tweet regarding Eisley above, OSU lead man Chris Holtmann was on hand. I'm told Reed liked the Buckeyes so much that he was ready to commit during his official visit last week. Those close to him were able to slow him down a bit and so the door is at least partially open. That said, until Michigan gets him on campus this one isn't all that serious. The Wolverines are definitely working from behind.

New Offer

Juwan Howard extended an offer to 5-star (for me) Kyle Filipowski yesterday after watching him during the live evaluation period over the weekend. No need for me to provide an extensive evaluation. Me ranking him as a 5-star for months while mainstreams have him in the 50-90 range tells you all you need to know about my opinion.

And much like the discussion of his skillset, I'll keep it brief concerning his recruitment. As mentioned in May, Filipowski plays travel-ball for the nephew of Duke leading man Mike Krzyzewski. Kyle is on campus at Duke for an official visit as we speak and I don't think you need me to tell you how this one is likely to end.

Expanding The Board

I've hinted since early June that Dominick Campbell was an up-and-coming prospect that caught the eye of the staff when he faced off versus Clingan in late May. I confirm the intrigue has now turned into interest, as the staff has now made contact.

Campbell is currently unranked, but is experiencing the proverbial blow-up in recent weeks as offers have come rolling in from Illinois, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Stanford, South Carolina, Minnesota, Virginia Tech, Providence and Penn State all within the last month. I have yet to see him play live, but based on film he has the look of a stretch 4/5 with good footwork and vision while having limited athleticism.

More importantly, expanding the board is likely indicative of where things stand with Lively and the staff is lining up alternatives if Clingan doesn't work out.

Maybe I'm a homer, but I'm so confused why every big in the country isn't knocking on Michigan's door to play for Juwan Howard given his pedigree and how the offense likes to run through the center. Big man recruiting is all of the sudden looking kinda iffy for this class

Any word on Christ Essandoko?

I have been thinking the same thing.  I figured that after seeing what Howard did with Hunter and Davis and reeling in the #1 class in the country that a lot of the 2022 kids would be lining up to play at Michigan.  It seems like the top three targets at every position are not really considering Michigan.

Maybe it is the case that Howard needs a few more years of real success before top players always want to come to Michigan?  I see how many 5* still want to play at Kentucky when they haven't done much of anything for years.

Kentucky hasn't done much of anything for years? For one, they still have the absolute best experience for a one and done. You get to be in your own suped up dorm, you have Cal, a crazy fanbase, and ESPN will talk about you nonstop. Second, they were down last year but were going to be a top 4 or 5 seed in 2020. And then have made at least the 2nd weekend for 5 of the previous 6 years. So if that's nothing than about every team in the country has done nothing

Looking at their history in the tournment the past several years I realized I misspoke, you are right.  They have had a great deal of success getting to the second weekend and beyond.  I must have just gotten confused thinking with so much top talent every year they would have won it all since 2012.  Guess I just have not been paying that much attention outside of the B10.

Kind of strange that we don't really lead for any of these guys.  Perhaps the HS bigs are not sure that Hunter and Moussa will go pro after this season?  Though, granted, a hometown school and the bluebloods are tough recruiting competition.

Good update Matt. I have a tangential question about Coach Howard's recruiting techniques/execution. It seems that Michigan does not offer an extensive amount of prospects (according to 247 they have offered 21 recruits in the 2022 class). Additionally, Michigan seems to make contact with a prospect while not extending an offer, after said prospect has earned offers from a multitude of programs. In football recruiting, it seems like being an early offer (read: first offer) carries a good amount of weight with recruits. Why would Coach Howard and staff not offer players earlier or after they have made significant contact with a prospect? Or is basketball recruiting just different in this regard?

Smaller roster size is a big factor. Compared to say a football roster of 85 scholarships, the 13 basketball ones means space is at a premium. If you fire offers to every player in the Top 50, you're not going to have space for them and you're splitting your time on too many guys. Thus basketball offers are far more selective and tend to occur once a guy becomes a top priority (like if a player higher on the board trends elsewhere).

Lower level schools can throw out offers more easily, but top level schools get pick of the litter and are often best served swooping in late. Hence why Kentucky, Duke and North Carolina offers carry so much weight. By following the same philosophy, Juwan is placing Michigan on that level, which is a good thing IMO.

Sure, that makes sense. But, there are still programs that offer 30-40 prospects, which doesn't seem too over the top. I guess it's more a question about when Howard and the staff feel comfortable actually extending an offer to a prospect. For instance, a kid like Cam Whitmore who has blown up on the recruiting trail, has been in contact with the coaching staff to some degree yet does not hold an offer from Michigan. It's a case by case basis, and the coaches don't have a "numbers advantage" like you say, but in those instances where the staff is interested in a prospect yet don't extend said prospect an offer just confuse me.

30-40 offers in basketball is an insane amount. who is making that many offers? I doubt any top level ones are doing that, there are not enough resources to recruit that many guys. Howard gives out plenty of offers, it's way more than Beilein lol. What matters is how much contact you are making with a recruit.

As for Whitmore, there are several things. One, they've barely reached out. Two, they have other guys at his position that are likely to commit. And to sum that up, if you're going to go after a guy as good as Whitmore you can't just toss out a cursory offer and then not talk to him much, he'd have to be a priority and it's clear that's not going to happen at this point. it's pretty clear that either they are not that interested in Whitmore, he's not that interested, or they don't see it being worth the effort based on the other guys on their board

@jdraman - offering 30-40 prospects isn't all that uncommon. Being plugged in to Alabama's program a bit (coming of an SEC Title and a S16 game), they offer a lot of kids. I looked it up via Verbal Commits and Oats has extended offers to 32 kids for 2022.

Every program in the country may not do it, but offering 30-40 kids isn't some extreme outlier. Illinois has offered over 50 kids for 2022 and are obviously coming off a successful season.

In general though, most offers are social media fodder rather than committable offers. And that applies for most schools. When a given program is willing to expend resources on OVs, then you know the offer is committable.

I’m glad that Juwan takes the time to make sure guys are a cultural fit!  Beilein did the same thing.

I think basketball players realize that coaches can’t just toss offers out left and right the way football coaches do (I wish they wouldn’t, to me an offer should be commutable).  Look at how excited the guy was when he got the Kentucky offer

@jdraman - short answer is that Michigan's recruiting profile has increased significantly since Juwan Howard took over. It's approaching blueblood status in terms of being coveted. Michigan is now an "it" school if that makes sense. The buzz is back.

Michigan can now swoop in late and steal kids from the bluebloods (see Moussa Diabate + Hunter Dickinson).  As long as Juwan Howard is the HC, Michigan will recruit at an elite level, period.

I wouldn't say we're not  trending well when we're talking about a pool of 4-5. Clingan is a kid we may very well land. This cycle is so fluky because the staff hasn't seen these kids live in nearly 2 years.

New targets will emerge such as Dom Campbell and Christ Essandoko. Once Juwan is able to see them play live, the mainstreams catch up to me in terms of rankings and we get in heavy with said prospects...........the feel will be much different.

July + August are pivotal months.

A very informative post as usual, but kind of on the non-encouraging side.  Flip just looks like an incredible prospect.  But I fear that we were "too late to the table" in his recruitment.  If he gets through the Duke visit without committing, and we can get him on campus, maybe we'd still have some kind of shot.  But short of that........

At some point if Howards top 4/5 are heading elsewhere, instead of digging deeper down the recruiting hole, i think Howard should focus hard on grabbing a stud transfer.

Whoever made that youtube video for Tarris Reed needs to rethink that title.  "The most DOMINATED forward in the west?!"

Unless its a low-light video and not a highlight video.... lol

F-ing Chaminade. (I'm from St. Louis.)

OSU must have some kind of connection to Chaminade. Perhaps I'm suffering from selective memory butI recall that the last few national recruits from Chaminade in football have gone to either Ohio State or Notre Dame. (And it seems the same will happen here in basketball.)

2022 recruiting has been more tepid than I thought, and I don't really understand why. Michigan won the Big Ten, still made a good run in the tourney after losing Livers to injury, and Juwan has shown his abilities to coach, get players to the NBA, and foster a fun team atmosphere and culture. Neglecting the idea of the bag, the only thing I can think of is that Juwan is still new, or that there is some negative recruiting we don't know about going on.

I really thought Clingan would be a guy that we would be able to get pretty easily if we wanted him, the fit is such a no brainer! I think you nailed it, it's a heart (hometown UConn) versus mind (perfect fit UM) and heart always wins that. Hopefully Hunter comes back, so Moussa is a 2 year guy, and buys us a little more time to find the next big man.
