[Jett, Juwan, Gregg]

Hoops Recruiting Is Bringing Friends Comment Count

Matt EM September 28th, 2021 at 12:01 PM

Michigan has filled the 2022 class with the PG of the future in Dug McDaniel along with another top-tier big in Tarris Reed. With Jett Howard likely to hop aboard relatively soon, the Wolverines are homing in on a select few prospects to round out the class.

With football season in full swing, visit season is upon us and this is where we weed out serious mutual interest from lip-service. All the latest below.

Gregg Glenn Set To Announce

4-star Gregg Glenn will make his college destination public on October 4th. Glenn is fresh off an official visit to Ann Arbor and all four Future Cast predictions are in favor of the Wolverines. Virginia Tech, Iona, Georgia and USF are the other finalists.

I'm not going to insult your intelligence and pretend this is a fierce battle. With deep ties to the Howard family and a committable offer now available, all things point to a Michigan pledge next Monday. The question is whether his good friend Jett joins the festivities.

All Eyes On Yohan

5-star Yohan Traore made his way to campus for an OV over the weekend. No public comments have surfaced in the aftermath, but I've done some digging here to see where things stand.

Official visits rarely go bad, particularly those visits where Juwan Howard is present. It is safe to assume the Wolverine staff, along with friend Moussa Diabate, made Traore feel comfortable while giving him the red-carpet treatment.

Sources have informed me that an influential person within Yohan's inner-circle may be relocating in the near future. If the Detroit/Ann-Arbor area happens to be a serious possibility, one can't help but to think Michigan's chances increase substantially. This may also explain why Traore will visit Kansas this weekend despite the Jayhawks' absence from the final ten

There are a lot of moving parts with this recruitment and the final ten can probably be disregarded at this point. The visits obviously tell a big part of the story along with the information conveyed above. I'm not sure anyone has a firm grip on where things are headed.

New 2023 Offers

Earlier this month, Juwan Howard handed out offers to a trio of elite juniors. First on the list was Matas Buzelis. A 6'9 forward with tons of perimeter skill that attends Brewster Academy (NH). Buzelis suits up for Chicago-based Mac Irvin Fire (Nike EYBL) in the summer, where Juwan Howard has heavy ties. This will probably be a recruitment that Michigan is seriously involved in.

Next up was Kylan Boswell of Arizona Compass Prep. A shotmaking lead guard originally from Illinois, he's already considered a 5-star prospect. The Midwest roots might mean that Boswell is comfortable leaving the West Coast, but there will be stiff competition here.

The final offer went out to 5-star wing Mackenzie Mgbako of Gill St. Bernard (NJ). An elite shooter at around 6'8, he's widely considered a Duke lock. Don't get you hopes up here.

dude "hone in" doesn't mean anything; its only use derives from people like Matt and yourself using it incorrectly.  From the same dictionary you just cited:

Most usage commentators consider hone in to be a mistake for home in

to hone is a transitive verb, "to sharpen".  to home in on, as in the case of missiles, pigeons, or recruiting classes, means what you want "hone in" to mean.

World Wide Words: Home in on

"You’re correct in your comment that the shift from home to hone has now gone so far that the latter is on the verge of becoming the usual form, at least in the USA. Some people even assume that the home form is a misprint. There seems little doubt that hone will eventually take over"

With basically no NIL rules, it's anything goes.  I can hear Kansas' NIL pitch, "Oh look McDonald's would like to you to rep them, here's a bag of money."  I know that was Tennessee's gig, but it works for multiple schools.

As for Glenn, his scouting report has him as a multi year power 5 player.  similar to Terrence Williams.

Most all of the guys we cheered for under Beilein were not highly ranked players. GRIII ended up a 5 star, but was actually still a 3 star (without an offer from his dad's alma mater Purdue) when he committed, he just blew up after that. The only highly rated guys that signed under Beilein were Zak Irvin and Mitch McGary. For as long as he was here, and for how much success he had, he rarely signed highly rated prospects.

Stauskas was a 4, but pretty low. Levert, Hardaway, Burke were all 3 stars.

great stuff. Thanks Matt.

I am sure Michigan made a great impression on Yohan during his official visit. Amazing how quiet he has kept his recruitment for such a high profile kid...hoping that it breaks good like Houstan and Diabate did before him

will keep my fingers crossed

I listened to a podcast from this past Friday and Sam Webb was saying that Chris Webber was expected to be in town. He was talking about how he and Juwan could sit down with Yohan and Reed to tell them about how two bigs can be successful in the same class. Anyone know if C-Webb was in AA?

These recruiting war games have gotten to the bizarre state of being-apparently everything is "fair"...there do not seem to be any rules. I don't know if this increases or diminishes our chances. It would seem as though Juwan can compete very well in this rule-less land.

I'm not sure what to think of Boswell-why is he considered a PG? His tape makes him out to be all shooter-surely he does pass the ball at some time. Matt, I'm curious what you have to say about this young man.

Mgbako, already, has an NBA stroke from deep-very deep. Sign that kid up and just sit back and smile.

The '21 class sets Michigan up very nicely going forward...Juwan and staff can win a lot of games with those kids. Michigan should contend, very strongly, for an NC this year. If "Traore" comes they will be in the thick of things next year too-will be even if he doesn't come. I would certainly like to see how a lineup with Diabate and Traore manning the 4 and 5 would play the game-both offensively and defensively.
