Ricky Doyle is out:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's basketball head coach John Beileinannounced today (Tuesday, March 29) sophomore forward Ricky Doyle requested and was granted his release from the University and plans to transfer for his final two seasons of eligibility.

"Ricky is a tremendous young man with very high character and plenty of potential to develop into being a fine college player," said Beilein. "We have enjoyed coaching him over the past two years and wish him nothing but the best."

After a promising freshman year Doyle's game and minutes evaporated as a sophomore. With Mark Donnal ahead of him on the depth chart and Mo Wagner coming on late plus two post recruits incoming, the writing was on the wall. Michigan is no longer over their scholarship limit for next year.

most physical guy in the paint.  That's my big beef with Donnal and Wilson.  They just seem to have no aggressiveness or toughness in the paint, and almost avoid contact at times.  Wagner doesn't seem to back down much even though he still needs to add strength and some weight. Davis seems like a guy who also can bang in the inside.

I'm bummed, as I saw last year as a temporary stall, and believed the staff would develop Ricky, as they've done with so many others.

I think this means Davis is going to play because nobody else has size to bang with legit NBA-caliber centers.  Have to at least offer some alternative physical looks, otherwise teams can get comfortable against our strategy of trying to use skill to beat size.

I assume that this decision was mutual with coaches hinting at or straight up telling Doyle he was behind Donnal and Wagner, but I still have mixed feelings  An acquiantance much closer to the program than me told me Doyle was one of the hardest workers on the team.  He had more of a physical presence than Donnal or Wagner.  Anyway, I hope it works out for us and him, and wish him well.

He may as well go somewhere and get starters minutes. I thought physically that he could be the tough banger down low that so many of us on the board clamor for. Really seemed to be too jittery and rushed himself into countless bumbling turnovers trying to either catch the ball, or dribble the ball, or go up with the ball. That said best of luck to him. Not sure we've seen the last of Ricky Doyle. Hell, he may be 6th man of the year in the conference in couple dozen months.
