Exit Brandon Jennings Comment Count

Brian December 16th, 2020 at 10:39 AM

Michigan's second chaos-related casualty is linebacker Brandon Jennings:

Jacksonville (FL) Sandalwood 2021 four-star linebacker Branden Jennings flipped his commitment from Michigan to Maryland on Wednesday and officially signed with the Terps, dealing a blow to the Wolverines' recruiting class in the process.

Jennings originally committed to Florida State but flipped to Michigan in search of a more stable situation. Now he's signed up with Mike Locksley.

Michigan also lost DE Quintin Somerville to UCLA, which is particularly grim since he was a potential DT. MI RB Donovan Edwards announces at 1:40; CA WR Xavier Worthy chooses between Alabama and Michigan at 4; FL CB Ja'Den McBurrows announces a final decision at 8. FL LB Jaydon Hood is not planning on signing in the early period.

There is no content after the jump.

I think Warde will do the right thing here, make a change for the better, and get us off this Merry Go Round from Hell. His picks for basketball and hockey coaches have worked out pretty well. Having an AD with actual experience as an AD shows.  Go Blue!

Jennings flipping doesn't surprise me much; he was a kid who has changed his school now 3 times in about 3 months.  Wish him luck but if he sticks with the Terps all 4 years I'd be surprised.

I honestly forgot Somerville was even in this class, but it's a loss.  I assume this means the defensive staff is being shaken up and so you're seeing guys bail.  At the same time, I guess I'm not surprised a guy from AZ would rather stick closer to home given the uncertain circumstances; he'd be UCLA's best commit by a wide margin if the class stands as it does now.

Worthy is likely gone but good to hear Edwards is likely signing on.  I assume McBurrows and Hood are both signing to UM but I guess anything can happen.

THIS-

"but flipped to Michigan in search of a more stable situation. Now he's signed up with Mike Locksley."

The comment above is not hyperbole which is insane.

Doesn't seem appropriate to make a post like this calling it an exit, when he was never in the program, nor ever signed with us...  unnecessary negativity.

What happened to the pipeline from St. Frances Academy? Was there a falling out with Poggi? It seems odd that no players committed to Michigan from St. Frances. I’m sure they have CBs and DTs that are better than taking 0-1 at each position.

I realize this will come off as sour-grapes but........... both he and Somerville had the profiles of a "classic" Michigan underachieving player.

I am not saying they won't be decent players (or better) in college but they were highly rated early in the process and have slowly dropped.  Most times that is a player that either didn't grow into the size/position expected or didn't progress physically/technique-wise beyond what was exhibited early in HS or Middle-school.  Almost always that player is propped-up in the rankings due to inertia or ego compared to what they would rate with a clean-slate evaluation.  (This could very well be affected by the size of the fanbase or number of site-subscribers due to the amount of backlash to a "we f-ed up!" level re-rank.)

I remember back as far as Marvin Robinson and Ricardo Miller from 2010 during the Rich Rod era -- both were "potential 5-stars" coming into their junior campaigns but ended up ranking in the 250-300 range as Seniors.  They seemed to both be decent players - neither stuck at M iirc - but probably more aptly ranked in the 500-1000 range than what the class-rankings showed.

I wish both payers well,  but I am not opposed to M seeking the Ronnie Bell or Hassan Haskins equivalent at their position as an alternative..
