Derrick Moore Has Committed to Michigan Comment Count

Michigan picked up another marquee commitment today, snaring former Oklahoma commit and 4* DL prospect Derrick Moore. This had been speculated over the past week or so, and today Moore put his ink to paper:

This is a pretty unique win, considering Moore was seldom mentioned in Michigan recruiting updates until a couple weeks ago. Moore was seen as a firm commit to Oklahoma when Lincoln Riley bolted for USC and the door re-opened. Michigan brought him on campus and quickly trended in the right direction. The optimism was muted at first because of an NCAA rule preventing teams from recruiting players from high schools whose recent head coaches had since been hired to an off-field role by that team. Moore is from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, whose coach up until July 2021 was Biff Poggi, who now serves in an off-field role for Michigan. It reportedly took a few days for Michigan to communicate with the NCAA, but once they felt like they could get a waiver to circumvent this rule, the hype train rolled full steam ahead and Moore sealed the deal today.

Here's his rankings breakdown:

Rivals: 6'4/245 ESPN: 6'4/250 247: 6'4/250 On3: 6'4/250 247 Comp

4*, 5.9, #121 OVR

#10 SDE, #3 MD

4*, 87, #23 OVR

#3 DE, #1 MD

4*, 94, #107 OVR

#16 DL, #2 MD

4*, 93, #167 OVR

#21 DL, #2 MD

4*, 0.9674, #79 OVR

#12 DL, #2 MD

4.39 4.83 4.47 4.38 4.67

Moore is seen as a high 4*, top 200 recruit by every service. Finding a position for him at Michigan will be interesting because Moore is a bit of a tweener, not quite possessing the raw athleticism to be a pure edge rusher, but also not quite big enough to be a model DT in the Macdonald defense. In that way, he looks more like a Don Brown anchor, and would seem to resemble Mike Morris on this current defense. Regardless of where he ends up playing, you have to take a recruit of Moore's caliber when the opportunity presents itself, and today it did.

Moore is Michigan's third 4* commitment today, following Keon Sabb this morning and Darrius Clemons a few minutes ago. The Wolverines now have the #9 recruiting class in college football according to both 247 Sports and On3.

We'll have a Hello in the near future.

I don't understand the comparison to Mike Morris.  Based on his tape he looks a lot more athletic than Morris and I'm guessing they took him as an SDE, which contributed to Ethan Burke staying in Texas.

BiG, I thought the same thing about those comps. His closing speeds, ball get off, and twitch are all mentioned in his evaluation. He doesn't seem to have as much wiggle or speed as David Ojabo but definitely appears to be able to get home in pass rush situations. Seems like the type of guy who can do a bit of everything at a high level. Who knows, Hutch wasn't seen as a Heisman finalist when he came aboard as a rising 4*.

Yeah, exactly.  Watching his highlights I found myself comparing him to Hutchinson (not that he's at that level but he looked like that kind of player).  I've also wondered if Jenkins could move to SDE, although his best trait appears to be explosion, leverage and quickness in very tight windows which is maybe why they've kept him inside.
