Channing Goodwin Has Committed To Michigan Comment Count

Alex.Drain May 7th, 2023 at 4:56 PM

The Michigan Wolverines have picked up their first WR for the 2024 recruiting class in Channing Goodwin out of Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina:

Goodwin is a 3*, just outside the top 500 in the 247 composite and #436 in the On3 Consensus. However, 247's own ranking of Goodwin has him as a 4*, inside the top 250, so there is some considerable variation here. If you recall Providence Day School, it is also the home to Michigan 5* QB commit Jadyn Davis. Goodwin is one of two Davis receivers that Michigan is after (uncommitted Jordan Shipp is the other), long considered the more likely of the two to end up in the class due to the family legacy: Goodwin's father is Jonathon Goodwin, Michigan OL from 1998-2001. Goodwin is the first WR in the 2024 class for Michigan, with further targets consisting of Shipp, I'Marion Stewart (IL), and Gatlin Bair (ID), among others. Goodwin is the 16th (including PWO FB Zach Ludwig) recruit to commit to Michigan in the 2024 class, as the Wolverines continue on a recruiting rampage that currenlty has them 1st nationally in team rankings.

Goodwin will get a hello in the coming days. There is no content after the jump.

If you look into Goodwin's Rivals and ESPN rankings, it looks like they've barely done any research or scouting on him. Goodwin feels like one of those recruits who is a legacy with an uneventful recruitment and the recruiting services just decide to not put any work into ranking them

High 3* would be significantly higher than where On3 ranks him.

They have him as the #27 player in NC. On the composite, the #27 player in NC is #915 overall.

They have him as the #136 ranked WR. On the composite, the #136 ranked WR is #1,043 overall.

So according to On3, he should fall somewhere in between #915 and #1,043. Safe to say that’s not high 3* and a player with that offer list should be ranked higher.

Gotta be honest...I'm at the point where I kinda don't get it with On3. I know they are the cool new kid on the block. But their RPM predictions machine seems ill thought out and full of bugs and not ready for primetime. The NIL calculator is silly and no way accurate, and their rankings leave a lot to be desired. It seems like they intentionally act contrarian in their rankings to make it look like they "know more" or are different.

It's not to "know more" or "be different." It's to get clicks. If they have contrarian ratings, they get more engagement and therefore more ad revenue

I only visit On3 because they list a players ranking from all four sites. Makes it easy to see their rankings without visiting each site separately, but I don’t like their site setup very much (like you said, the RPM and NIL valuation make no sense) and I don’t know what to make of their scouting/rankings at this point. But, they’re part of it.

- oh man, looking at my points it seems ashwood35 has a little crush on me

based on a star rating

depends on whose star rating you’re going by. 247 has him as a top 250 recruit.

I also think it’s pretty silly to judge the body type of a high school junior, he has a whole year in high school plus whatever Ben Herbert can do with him to alter his body, but a big CB and a WR generally have similar body types anyway.
