Martavious Odoms practicing with team
Chris Balas from Rivals has stated that Martavious is running with team, but is still wearing the red jersey. Not expected to play, but a good sign for him moving forward.
Also Balas mentioned that WR Jeremy Gallon has been playing a bit of QB with the read option and that he is good at it. Balas is not saying he will see extensive action there, but it's a wrinkle they could bring out at some point.

Thanks for making Rivals free.

It is not copy and pasted, but I feel that this might be too much premium info.

Jeremy Gallon at QB??
...things definitely aren't looking hot for our TB situation right now..
December 17th, 2010 at 9:10 AM ^
Guessing he'll just do a wrap draw or zone read -- which is essentially a wildcat type play. It doesn't matter that he is technically a QB on the play (and IIRC, he was a QB in high school also) -- he won't be throwing.

Maybe when JG is in a QB, Denard will line up in the slot.
Would confuse the hell out of everyone.

Break out the Wrinkle Cream! I don't want to see Gallon at QB for any snap... Denard has more than enough athleticism and Gallon is a mistake machine.

Glad to see that Odoms is running again and rehabbing nicely. As far as Gallon goes, just don't let him return punts / kicks anymore, please? I can't bear to watch him fumble another return.

Gallon ran the triple option in high school, right?

Apopka runs an unbalanced single wing. Think pre-1950 Michigan football.

Apparently, in his effort to be perceived as a true Michigan man, Rich Rodriguez is installing Fielding Yost's offense for the bowl game.

I believe what Gallon ran in H.S. was the old single wing (correct me if I am wrong Magnus or other coaches) which is a power running formation with lots of movement that relies on great ball handling and fakes. He was extremely effective and threw very few passes.

I like Gallon, and I think he'll be good in the future, but how could he possibly be more dangerous running the read option that Denard f-ing Robinson??
I'm hoping this is just a back up plan in case Denard gets banged up again.

We've often said that we don't really want denard to run "Traditional" (Navy, GTech) option sets, as it sets up the QB for big hits.
Maybe this is just going to be a wrinkle and allow the offense to run more plays? Now teams will have to prepare for the Zone Read... but also at least spend some practice time on the triple option.

"I'm hoping this is just a back up plan in case Denard gets banged up again."
i have to believe this is it. if denard gets hurt, gallon maybe be a better backup plan on obvious running plays (vs tate; since devin is being redshirted)

Is Gallon perhaps playing a bit of Relf for our D?
December 17th, 2010 at 9:43 AM ^
I think that would be Devin Gardner. They look the same on the field except Devin can get the ball in the same area code as the receiver.
(Just kidding. Relf can throw sometimes and I fear him mightily.)

So relieved that he won't need surgery on his back! Phew!
December 17th, 2010 at 9:34 AM ^
but Gallon has a considerable amount of talent as a receiver and has made a positive impact at that position...or would have if two of his longer gains weren' wiped out by F-ing penalties.
I was a little shocked at how much I didn't miss Odoms...while he's one of my favorite players, we're just simply stacked at receiver.
December 17th, 2010 at 9:49 AM ^
he is a better blocker downfield than any of the guys that filled in for him.
December 17th, 2010 at 12:24 PM ^
and has maybe the most reliable hands out of the bunch
December 17th, 2010 at 12:48 PM ^
I think to a large extent, Odoms injury has proven how valuable he really is to this offense. In my mind, he is the most reliable, sound receiver on the team. It would have been a great help to have had him during our rough patch.
December 17th, 2010 at 10:12 AM ^
I thought we missed Odoms quite a bit when we were down to a one-legged Stonum and Jeremy Jackson at WR vs. OSU.
December 17th, 2010 at 10:23 AM ^
once gallon's hands improve, he'll be a real dangerous weapon.
December 17th, 2010 at 10:31 AM ^
Would be great to see Odoms at 100 percent by the spring. Think he could have a solid senior season.
I agree with previous posters that if you want a QB to run with the ball Denard is as athletic as they get while stil keeping the threat of the pass on every play.
December 17th, 2010 at 11:56 AM ^
I feel much better when Odoms is on the field.
Gallon at QB doesn't make me feel comfortable at all. Not really sure what would be accomplished there. Denard is a much bigger threat...mostly because he can attack in air or ground. Like a Naval Harrier.
Gallon is explosive...I think he is best when Denard throws the quick pass out on the running slot curl route (pardon my incognizance regarding the play description). Give Gallon some room and momentum on the quick pass wide and watch him roll down field!
December 17th, 2010 at 10:39 AM ^
i love watching him play, he is definately one of my favorite receivers. I can't believe how well he can block, he plays a lot bigger than his size. glad to hear he is healing up.
has there been any news on woolfolk lately? have not heard anything about him in a while.
December 17th, 2010 at 10:56 AM ^
Gallon at QB? I wonder if DR will be in the slot and TF in the backfield. I can see the MSU D scratching their heads on that one.
December 17th, 2010 at 11:53 AM ^
I would be scratching my head too. I'd wonder what the hell happened to Denard, Tate and Devon.
December 17th, 2010 at 12:20 PM ^
Good to hear that Martavious's rehab is going smoothly. As for the Gallon playing QB thing, I dont necessarily think its a bad thing since it just gives our offense another wrinkle that the opposing defense has to prepare for.
December 17th, 2010 at 1:28 PM ^
But glad he's able to take part in the practices and feel part of the bowl experience. As for Troy, hope he's there too, even on the sidelines. In case he forgets, he's always part of the team as far as we're concerned. Here's to health for the New Year!
December 17th, 2010 at 2:24 PM ^
This is the best news I've seen all day. Including recruitment posts. (Recruiting's important, but the health of current M players is more important.)
December 17th, 2010 at 2:38 PM ^
Is he getting called for illegal legal chop blocks?
