OT: Minnesota Coaching Targets

Submitted by Dr.Jay on

From Twincities.com

The Gophers have targeted, in order of priority, Boise State's Chris Petersen, Stanford's Jim Harbaugh and Texas Christian's Gary Patterson to replace the fired Tim Brewster.

And in other news I am looking to fuck Jennifer Aniston, Gisele Bundchen or Jessica Alba this weekend.       He if Minny can aim that high why cant I???

I think you'd get a vigorous argument from many WVU fans, even some of those who aren't RR haters, that Don Nehlen was the most successful WVU coach in history.

RR had a better winning % compared to Nehlen, 69% vs 59%, but Nehlen coached a lot longer, had 149 victories vs RR's 60, and got into one game for the NC, losing to ND. RR came within an injury to Pat White's thumb of getting into a NC game of his own.

However, I have to think that if RR had stayed on at WVU for as long as Nehlen did that he would have passed him easily on the total wins, and would have gotten a NC win.

Not to downgrade his success there, but the significantly higher winning percentage and the fact that they had never won a major bowl game until Rodriguez got there (under Nehlen or anyone else in their 100 year history) I think tips the scales in his favor.

Even if you want to make the argument (and I don't think WVU fans would make it if Rodriguez hadn't jilted them for the Michigan job), pretending Rodriguez was "just an offensive coordinator" is ridiculously dumb.

But it is worth noting that RR's success as a head coach has come when he had Jeff Casteel running the defense.  Since their separation, Casteel has continued to field excellent defenses while RR is having a hard time winning.  It makes one wonder: what would RR's record at West Virginia have been if he had a guy like GERG coordinating the D?

"The Pistons would be willing to consider trading Rip Hamilton for Josh Smith." Yeah and I'd be willing to trade Kurt Thomas for Dwight Howard for the Bulls, whoopdy freaking doo.

There's no way that Peterson or Patterson would leave programs they've built into top-5 and somewhat-legit NC contenders for a program that's as downtrodden as any in the Big 10. Mike Bellotti had pretty good success at a PAC10 school with huge bankrolling from Nike and access to California players; Minnesota would be a definite step down. If Phat Phil is really interested, that's a sign of desperation on his part. Minny's best route is to look for either an excellent coach at a non-BCS school right now who's below the radar, or for a coordinator at a major program who appears to have true HC potential.

If Rich Rod loses his job here, I bet Minnesota interviews him and maybe hires him.

How much would that suck? He turns Minnesota around, but couldn't do the same here.
