GERG on Michigan radio at halftime
Pointed to recognition issues for the poor defense. That can often mean that there was not the necessary concentration on your opponent in the film room and practice field by the players. Maybe assuming that you can just do whatever against a perceived lesser opponent?
UMASS runs their stuff very well. They are definitely the type of team that will require you to watch them closely in prep.

That is no excuse for the poor play in the first half. GERG was out coached in every facet of the defense in the first half. I think a lot of the reason that the defense looks terrible is that the 3-3-5 is not made to stop power running teams, it's better for spread teams. We should see some 4-3 in the second half, or the same thing will continue to happen.

Yeah. You can count on a finger or two how many times we have controlled that edge and gotten good linebacker pursuit on the same run play.

Exactly. It has been sad to watch because I know teams like Wiscy and MSU are licking their chops watching our defense today.

yeah. we'd be sucking wind against any of those teams right now. They'll destroy us if we can't control things better up there.

It looks like we're a little more alive now, finally!! HAIL HAIL

We're saving our 4 man fronts for later in the year. Maybe I'm in denial, but I refuse to believe our D is that bad. I'm assuming we didn't dip too deep into either playbook.
Still, I'll take the W.

Every once in a while you meet a guy on here who proves the old adage:
everyone is put on earth for a purpose. Some if only to serve as a poor example for others.

I'm pretty sure that myth was debunked by Magnus.

if we had more depth . . . or senior leadership . . . .or he who shall not be named who left with a year of eligibility.

That would definitely help, but there is never an excuse for getting blown off the ball consistently against an FCS team. They're running through us like butter. John Clay is watching this and laughing his ass off.

I wish I had some kind of rebuttal here.....but I don't. I'm counting on D'Rob's meteoric rise to have a greater effect on our recruiting for the D than anything else. You have to want to play for a team where you KNOW the QB can put up serious numbers almost anytime he touches the ball.
AmIright?

Yes you are right to some degree. I'm hoping big time prospects watching this game are licking their chops, knowing that they can get in and play immediately. i'm just hoping as the season continues that the defense will progress and get a better because we certainly took a step back today from the previous two weeks.

Big time prospects don't have the big ten network.

I think you make a good point. UMASS is 300 plus along the line though. They are abnormally large for an FBS. If you aren't fully locked in and understanding what they are doing because you aren't fully prepared, you'll look bad.
I agree totally with the no excuse point though.
