Jim Wolter, a guard on some of the formidable Michigan football teams of the late 1940s and early 1950s died Sunday at age 80, according to his son.

Born in 1929, Wolter graduated from Ypsilanti High School. He was a freshman when the Wolverines won a national championship in 1948.

He helped lift Michigan to conference titles in 1949 and 1950 and a Rose Bowl win over California in 1951. After football, Wolter worked as a chief appraiser at First Federal Bank for much of his career. He lived in Livonia.

I worked for the guy for a couple years.

Last time I saw him was outside the Rose Bowl prior to the game versus WSU on January 1, 1998.  As you might guess, he was a die hard Wolverine fan as well as a huge fan of Bo's.

How times change - Liek Bo, Wolter was an offensive guard in his playing days, but was the size of today's linebakers.
