Chase Young becomes highest drafted Michigan lacrosse player
Michigan's Chase Young became the fourth player from the University of Michigan to be drafted in the MLL Collegiate Draft two nights ago. Young was drafted 35th overall by the Denver Outlaws. He will be joining former Michigan players, Mikie Schlosser and Mike Hernandez, in the mile high city. Schlosser is entering his first full season as an Outlaw after being drafted last year with the 54th pick. Previously, Kyle Jackson (57th in 2016) and Brekan Kohlitz (44th in 2008) have been drafted. Jackson still remains in the league and will play on Boston Cannons this year after he finishes his NLL season with the Rochester Knighthawks.
The MLL season kicks off this weekend, but Young will probably not play his first game as an Outlaw until week 4 or week 5.
This is now three straight years of sending players to the MLL, and that streak will likely continue into the future with Heidt, Noseworthy, and Curran being seniors next season.
Would that also make him the FIRST Michigan Lacrosse player drafted?
No, Schlosser, Jackson, and Kohlitz are Michigan lacrosse players that have been drafted before. However, Kohlitz was a club player when he was drafted.
It seems kind of weird to me that a professional sports league that essentially requires players to have other full-time jobs to survive would have a draft... They should be able to play for whatever team they want that’s near where they can get a day job.
The nfl had a draft and players working other jobs for a while too.
Ben Roethlisberger had a bathroom monitor job in some college town bar in Georgia early in his career with the Steelers.
Some woman in Philadelphia had a bathroom monitor job at Starbucks. Didn't work out well for her though.
There was a LaCrosse draft. Also a pro LaCrosse League.
You know it would be cool if they had an MLL team in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
Do you really want the universe to implode?
There are actually two professional lacrosse leagues - MLL (outdoor, big field variety) and NLL (indoor box-lacrosse league).
I thought Belichick found another LAX player.
Didn't know there was an actual LAX draft. I love this site.
There's a professional lacrosse league?
Not trying to be a smartass or rag on the guy. Congrats to him, but I'm really just surprised that there's a professional lacrosse league. I can't imagine there's a ton of interest of revenue flowing in. If there was a professional lacrosse team here in Atlanta, where I live, I wouldn't be able to tell you the name of the team.
The Georgia Swarm is the indoor (NLL) team and the Atlanta Blaze are the outdoor (MLL) team. Denver is the only other city that is home to teams from both leagues.
This is remarkable - in one year, Chase Young went from being an anonymous d-middie on one of the country's worst defenses to being a legitimate offensive weapon and draft pick. It's pretty amazing - I feel like he might've been better suited for offense all along but I'm glad Conry figured out how to use him.
Way to go Chase. Congrats - and go get 'em tomorrow!
JP said all along that the plan was to move him to offense once his stick skills got better. And a lot of people think the SSDM is one of the most important positions on the team, since that's basically who the opponent targets wtih midfield dodges whenever they can.
But he's been a revelation this year. His quickness allows him to consistently beat his defender, draw a slide and get the defense rotating. I would consider him our most important midfielder, but only because I feel like Noseworthy is really still a crease attackman.
Also heard today that Conor Ford left the program. Not sure what's going on there.
Young has great, subtle speed in short distances. Not necessarily quickness, but his ability to gain separation in his 2nd, 3rd and 4th steps. It's that deceptive Carlos Beltran/Steve Breaston type speed in which he doesn't look like he's going that fast but then you realize he's getting away from you.
That's crazy about Ford. I hope he's still around and can stick it out for 2 more games. Offense needs to turn it around big time.
Ouch, glad I'm out of reach now.
