OT: J.D. Martinez traded to Arizona

Submitted by Blue19 on

What the title says, he was traded for Dawel Lugo, Sergio Alcantar and Josh King. Do not really know that much about them.

That about sums it up. King may have the most potential, just since he's the least known of the three. But yeah, I find it hard to believe we couldn't have gotten a better return for JD. I'm withholding judgment on Avila for now - he still has opportunity to redeem himself if he can get better returns in other trades. Not a good start though.

trying to trade Martinez since last winter. The market for an often injured, below average wheels and defender, rental player isn't what we think.

People overvalued what J.D. was going to bring back. It's all surface research.

Dig a little deeper, try and think outside the box. Take a step back, breathe, and let it play out. If in 5 years these prospects are elsewhere/not impacting the club, I can understand the angst.

If the Tigers are lucky, one fhese guys will end up being a servicable bench player.  If they hit the absolute jackpot, they might get TWO bench players.    Lugo would have to go through a radical transformation in his hitting approach to be a guy you would want starting at 3B on a winning team.

at Arizona's top prospect (50-100 range). If Arizona declined, there are still nearly 2 weeks left for better offers. Why the rush to make a deal? Hell, keeping JD for the rest of the season and letting him walk for a comp. pick may have been a better alternative to the hot pile of shit the Tigers got back.

Tigers are just looking to get rid of the high salaries, since they know they will be cellar dwellers for years to come. A lot of teams are going to make out like bandits against the Tigers. Plus, I don't trust their scouting system for young talent. It will be years and years before the Tigers are contenders again. I usually go to see a game or two when they visit KC but I have no interest seeing the Tigers.

Old supply and demand. There was only one contender that needed a power bat and infusion of offense. Arizona knew it. Detroit knew it, so why not go for some very young prospects, who are all playing at a higher level than their age in the minors, save King, who is 18, and see what happens. The demand for him just wasn't there. Move quick with Arizona, or they'll get another bat, and you get even less for JD. Makes sense.
