Shaun Conway praise from Helmholdt
This story is today's (paper redacted) concerns the very good showing Conway has made in elite skills camps since he accepted our offer. No link, but the main point is made below:
"What jumped out in that performance was the fluid style Conway possesses and his natural pass-receiving skills.
At last weekend’s BadgerSports 7-on-7 Tournament, Conway displayed an even greater array of talents. Playing for the Detroit Elite 7-on-7 team, Conway hauled in touchdown pass after touchdown pass. His ability to find holes in zone defenses, and his ability to separate from defenders in man defenses, created a mismatch against even the top competition at the event."
Good stuff.

and showing their worth; it's only when this happens that the talk about the staff not being good evaluators of talent will go away, or at least simmer down.

I think the coaches found another steal.

Conway is faster than he looked (at times) on his game film. I read somewhere that he was nursing an injury at various times during his season and based upon the disparity with how fast he has looked on the camp circuit vs. his game film, I believe that to be true.
Based on camp film, the kid looks to be a legit 4.55 guy. That is pleny fast for someone 6'3" or 6'4". That height/speed ratio is a rare blend. Combine that with long arms, big hands, a 37 inch vertical and he plays even taller.
Barring something unforseen, imo, he should be on track for 4 star status. The guy is a rare blend of tools combined with hands like fly paper.
This is a big time add to the Michigan program.
not sure how you are at -491 if you make posts like that Sherwin.
i couldn't agree more.
seems like a real sleeper, or at least he WAS a sleeper. Coach Rod always seems to find these guys before anyone else, even the guys we don't get. He just has a natural eye for talent, which pumps me up even more.
Best Case scenario: Braylon with bigger hands
More likely: A big, reliable target a la Adrian Arrington
The Braylon comparisons are fun, but Braylon was a burner. Denard gets a lot of hype for his track exploits, but Braylon was one of M track's top sprinters (and high jumpers) for a couple years. Conway has good speed, but not Braylon speed. The edge he has on Braylon is that BE was on the high side of 6'2", and Conway sounnds like he's 6'4", and could still add an inch.
I think of him as James Hardy from IU a few years ago. I'm pretty sure he was drafted, so it's still a hopeful comparison.
Tall with great hands and good route running but "eh" speed reminds me of Marquise Walker.
That was the comparison I made, too.
Wasn't Hardy, like, 6'7" though? I mean, 6'4" is great, that's plenty tall, and it'll cause plenty of matchup problems, but 6'7" is like a whole new level of uncoverability.
I could be wrong, but I think the Hardys were only about 6'1". Their friend Biff might have been 6'7", though.
ESPN has him listed at 6'5", and that's the number I had in my head when I wrote the post. Still might be on the tall side compared to Conway, but I'm guessint Conway has the hops to make up for that.
Obviously any guy we bring up as a comparison is going to be different in one way or another, but that's the type of WR I think of when I see Conway.
He reminds me of Mike Williams from USC. Conway looks like a longer strider than Mike, but that's the best comparison I can come up with thus far.
I know it's way early, but I think Conway's upside is huge. You sometimes worry about a big WR being too slow and question whether he should move to TE. I don't think that's the case w/ Conway at all. I think he's easily fast enough for outside WR, he has GREAT hands, and has size you can't teach. Love that he's a top bball player as well.
