Illinois center: "M BB is a white collar team"

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Ouch.

These teams play again in 10 days at Crisler.

If this is not used and this team doesn't come out with some, oh I don't know, energy and anger?...............then the coaches aren't doing their jobs.

Maverick Morgan: They are traditionally a white collar team.

Illinois forward Maverick Morgan (8-9 FGs, 16 pts) calls Michgian "traditionally a white collar team."

It's true of this current team.

Not traditionally. Michigan Basketball in the 60s with those great Cazzie Russell and Bill Buntin teams used to be known as Bloody Nose Lane. Because no one would go inside on that team.

The way the University of Michigan team sees it, the meek will never inherit the game of basketball and anyone who thinks it is a noncontact sport has been reading too many rule books. The Wolverines lovingly refer to that area of the court from the key to the basket as Bloody Nose Lane. The designation was actually Coach Dave Strack's, but Strack is a bashful, unpresumptuous father of five and is reluctant to take full credit. In any case, when a fun-loving Wolverine drives down Bloody Nose Lane he calls it "going in to cut me some meat"—which means he's going for two points, or for a rebound, or for something more filling. Coach Strack calls that "clean, aggressive ruthlessness," and the Big Ten is reeling under the impact.

It is sad that you have to reach all the way back to the 1960s to say that Michigan basketball isn't soft.

I'd say that Jordan Morgan was our last big that wasn't soft.  Don't try to say McGary wasn't soft, the dude was injured more often than not.

I was afraid the word about this team would get out: if you play hard against Michigan, you'll win.  That's not a good rep to have.

This team has talent but they need to get tough.  They're feather soft out there.

This is the first game in a while that I watched unmuted and Seth Davis mentioned how this is a very quiet team.  Quiet can mean that there's a strong internal fire burning (ie. Greg Maddux).  I don't think that's what he meant.

Remember the post from last year or two years ago about how some H.S. and AAU coaches were calling our style of play soft.  This is not a new allegation.

is pretty much a direct result of a team that is coached to commit as few fouls as possible (this is probably both a coaching decision as well as a result of a thin bench most years). Teams that are "blue collar" naturally are teams that push the envelope in physicality. And that is going to result in a lot of fouls called.

Oh good lord. I support the firing of Beilein more just so that we won't have 2 more months of all this complaining and internet psychoanalysis of this team.

This isn't a "discussion" as much as people trying to one-up themselves in describing how bad this program is, how Beilein is a bad coach, how the team is "soft", "white collar", not "tough" enough, and everything else.

I will stand that Beilein has earned the right to have a year like this, but the expectations are he improves the following season.  We'll see if that happens.  But in all these threads, nobody has a better candidate out there to replace him.

He's not saying anything that isn't true.

I haven't watched a lot of basketball this year, but I've watched enough to know that when a middling at best Big Ten team runs all over you, you're soft, and you're not very good. There has been zero, and I mean ZERO toughness on this team since Morgan left.

It could be mitigated by guys like Burke and Stauskas who could shoot the lights out of the arena every night. At least then you have the chance to out-score the other team. But you have no star power and no athleticism on this team. And no one who can play defense. That's a recipe for losing every single time.

It sucks. Michigan was never a great defensive team under Beilein, but they always at least used to be fun to watch when they could score at will. Now, they're just as bad defensively, and they can't put together a consistent offense. It's just no fun to watch anymore.

When a team with tradition of Bloody Nose Lane and The Fab Five are called soft and white-collar, you know that there is a problem, and in this case, the solution is Exit John Beilein.
