OT: Heisman Selection

Submitted by Catchafire on
It makes sense to wait until after bowl season is played to select the Heisman winner and yet we don't. Yesterday we saw the Heisman winner Lamar Jackson falter against LSU and Watson throttle fOSU. Do the votes change if we had to vote today? What if Clemson goes on to defeat Bama soundly? After last night, my vote is still for *Peppers. Watson is a close 2nd. *If Peppers plays against FSU I think we win and limit the big plays by half easily.

I get the idea of wanting the Heisman decided after the bowl game, but I actually think it would not be the best approach.  The point of the trophy is who had the best season overall, not who played best in the bowl game.  If you handed it after, though, there would be a heavy bias towards performance in the bowls - and especially in the playoffs.  I prefer having it function as a whole-season award, not as a playoff MVP award, which is probably what would happen if we moved the date.

I agree that it should be after the bowls are over, but I can't give it to Peppers. He kind of disappeared in big moments this year. Right now, I don't think you can give it to anyone other than Watson. He throttled OSU all by himself last night, and he has a chance to take revenge in a big game against Alabama next week.

I think Jackson won because he was so far ahead of the field at the beginning of the season that people had already made their minds up, even when he faltered down the stretch.

The vast majority of voters are not former players but media.  Something like 750 of the 900 votes are by media members.  I never thought highly of the Heisman (how many have success at the next level?) but not inviting Keenan Reynolds to the 2015 ceremony was a travesty.

I wasn't really impressed with Watson, his two interceptions kept 0su in the game for a little while. I still think Adoree Jackson was the best player in football this year

I think some of what we saw had to do with Lamar Jackson and a lot of it was Dave Aranda having a month to prepare for him. Other than Don Brown, he's probably the best DC out there
