Washington Post piece: Not a Michigan man, but Brown is a perfect fit

Submitted by Ecky Pting on

OK, so I can't find this piece that appears in this morning's print edition of the Washington Post anywhere on WashPo's site. The only place I could find it is on PrintReader, which it turns out makes it a snap to copy and paste articles into the webtool of your choice. So here you go: (BTW, the WashPo is the defacto local paper for the Terps ICYDK, although some would argue it's the Baltimore Sun, but whatever):

Not a Michigan man, but Brown is a perfect fit

Well-traveled coordinator’s relentless philosophy has made the Wolverines’ defense the best in the country

LON HORWEDEL/ASSOCIATED PRESSMichigan Coach Jim Harbaugh, left, hired Don Brown in December after Brown turned Boston College’s defense into the best in the country during his three seasons there.

MOD EDIT - Since the link exists, let's not paste entire articles into the blog. I realize the difficulty in this instance as the OP stated, but we should correct the problem as soon as the right link is available, IMHO. - LSA

Thanks for the edit. -OP

He's worth the price of admission all by himself at the coaches conference. That Dude is intense and knows WTF he's doing. I can see anyone being very motivated by him, hope he sticks around here until he decides to hang em up.

Good read. Thanks for posting. You know you have a good coach when former players are still keeping an eye on what he is doing. Obviously Don Brown is doing something special.

This article made me look a little more into Brown's past.  I don't remember how much detail this site got into when he was hired (aside from BC is #1 in defense!!), but a couple other things caught my eye:

1.  While Defensive Coordinator at Yale, he was also interm head baseball coach.  He led the lead to a rare NCAA tournament appearance and their ONLY NCAA tourny win since he was there.

This reminds me of something a former college player told me was a sign of the greatness of Lombardi.  Lombardi taught himself basketball and then lead a HS team to its only state championship.  Some people are just great coaches, regardless of sport.  The teach motiveate and pay attention to details all with the purpose of simply winning.

2.  He did GREAT at UMass as a Head Coach.  I wondered why a guy his age had not landed a good head coach gig, but apprently he had a good (enough) one, but was hired away for more money to be at Maryland as DC.  I wonder why didn't get the Maryland job?  I hope he harbors some ill will towardsthem for that. :)

Nice article. But "Michigan Man"? Are we really still differentiating coaches based on this term?

'Michigan Man' term should be left to collect dust in the halls of Schembechler, on the walls of the Towsley Museum, in the stacks of Bentley.

Not only is Don Brown a good fit, but it is nice to see that the defense has become that very philosophy- that relentless, aggressive philosophy that doesn't know nor care particularly who you are and will do what they can to stop you from advancing much past the spot you are currently in. That transformation happened quickly, and part of that is because Brown works so well inside what Harbaugh has created here.

Than someone saying "Not a Michigan Man, but..."

I don't care how good the article is...I hate hate hate when people use the phrase "Michigan Man" to put down somebody as somehow inferior (at least that's the implication). The phrase should be reserved for people who have earned it, and never used otherwise. For all we know, Don Brown will become a Michigan Man, it's only a matter of time. Shoot, he probably already is one. Who cares if he wasn't when he got hired. It was never a requirement to begin with, damnit!

I can not take the Washington Post's constant political spin.   However thank you for the link to the article....and this is a great photo of Dr Blitz Hulking Out:

As much as I liked Durkin, Brown has been even better. I truly hope he stays at UofM for the remainder of his coaching days. He makes me think we can remain effective next year after we lose our NFL talent, smh.
