MGoLateNight: Offensive MVP?

Submitted by WichitanWolverine on

It's late, and probably only the West Coasters and youngins are awake, but I haven't seen much discussion on the matter. So flat out, who is your offensive MVP?

My vote is Ty Isaac. I thought he was consistent tonight and even though he didn't make any major plays, he plugged away and moved the chains. JBB was also thrown into the fire and came out as cold rolled steel, in my opinion.

I think a more educated opinion might point to the right side of the line, but I need to rewatch before drawing that conclusion.

So what say you?

Isaac, but he still hasn't shown the "it" factor. Too many times he's slow to accelerate to an open hole or he avoids contact and turns a potentially big run into a short gain. Sometimes Ty runs like he's at the grocery store trying to make up his mind about which brand of salad dressing to choose. If he ran like Higdon did last game Ty would be our #1 back IMO. Ty has all the tools.

Honestly I would give it to Speight. People were dogging him all day but the dude went 20-32 62% for 219 yards and made some crucial throws that won us the game. Speight has that quiet confidence about him. We all know what Jim Harbaugh has done with every QB he has practically ever touched. I believe Speight will continue to progress. Last year Rudocks coming out party was against Indiana. I think we will see Wilton have a game during the second half of the schedule that sees him take full control of the offense with full confidence and capability.

Good %, game winning TD.  but man those long sacks where he just holds it

and holds it

and backs up

and hold it

then takes the sack.

got too work on those.  I realize that he's a big strong kid that is looking downfield to still make a play but cmung man!
Those were drive killers that could have allowed a simple 4th & short opportunuty if he just throws it away.

I cant dog him too much however because I'd rather he take a long sack than throw an ill advised INT any day.

Yea that one towards the end of the game where he held it on 3rd and long inside the red zone...
Dude. Launch it into the back of the end zone....
And bring out our field goal kicker for a chip shot....ok...
Never mind!

He isn't really comparable to Rudock. Rudock had been a starter for 2 years before coming here. He had seen and felt live ammunition for 20+ games before he took a snap for us. His issue was timing, getting in sync and the playbook. Even when he was Ruddock in the early season he didn't look lost most of the time when his first look wasn't there. In fact, Rudock pushed a lot of passes onto his 2nd-3rd read when the 1st was open. Speight breaks the huddle already knowing who he's throwing to. He has 2 INTs but defenders have had both hands on 8 others I can count so far. I applaud his escapability when draped by a defender but he panics a lot and makes very poor decisions. He has almost zero field/game awareness when it comes to looking guys off, throwing it away, running forward for 0-? yards, etc. He's succeeded against very poor defenses and been rattled by the two we've played that had a pulse. You can force that 1st read against Hawaii, not Wisconsin. Well, when you do you're playing with fire anyway. This isn't to say Speight can't develop (!) but I think it'll be much more Navarre-like than the Ruddock to Rudock transformation. Did Harbaugh help Rudock? Absolutely. Yet, he was already a veteran. He was a 5th year Senior with multiple years of playing time. Speight is not even close to an above-average QB right now. He can be really good (!) but the guy is a project RS So with 5.5 games under his belt. Oddly, the lone UW interception was very flukish when he had 3 that were essentially thrown to the defenser but dropped, same vs Colorado. He could have EASILY had 4 that game. The stats are very misleading with him right now.

His inexperience is the exact reason I'm high on him. For only playing in five games as a starter, I would say he's off to a good enough start that it isn't unreasonable to expect some serious improvement by seasons end. I don't expect Wilton to be a world beater, but if / when he fixes his obvious issues, I think he could be a very solid QB.

bingo. the kid is 5-0. numbers are fantastic. eludes tons of sacks, keeps play going like big Ben does. NEVER once got happy feet. I don't think be could play better than this, his first five games. I guess one needs to recall.all the pain with RR and Hoke. am just shocked anybody would be bitching, even mildly, about SP8 right now

I think Asiasi has the potential to do both of those well, but the guy's a true freshman in his now fifth game. We've seen glimpses, and I think he will continue to improve in both aspects

Moved the ball well enough. The missed FGs kind of hide that. The game should had been 23-7 and never in doubt. The pick did lead to points though. Anybody who thinks JBB is under consideration for this didn't hear who all of the holds were called on.

JBB played solid in a hard game for him.  He was just hanging out watching like the rest of us, and them BOOM!  He's in the game being asked to stop one of the best blitzing defense in football.  Yeah, he had some holds coming in cold, but TJ Watt and the safety were pretty damn good.  I'm satisfied with his play overall...

Isaac is an informed choice for Off MVP, as is Speight - great game management against a helluva defense.

But my choice is for Darboh.  Dude was doubled up all day if he ventured more than 5 yds from the line, and still had a great day catching the ball.  One drop doesn't diminish that.  What happened to Chesson?  Seems like he can't get open anymore, and is rarely targeted.  Perry was okay, but I'm getting kinda worried that the WR corp has been reduced to Darboh.  And I have no idea why.

Also Chesson - he was last years KO returner, and was excellent at it.  This year, he doesn't even sniff the return teams.  What's going on with him?

6 rec, 87 yds and the game winner. Yeah, he had a crucial 3rd down drop. However, if you haven't watched a good replay of his TD catch, go back and look at the route he runs to get open. He roasted Tyndal with a jab step inside and then just outruns him. Jim's assertion that Amara is the best WR on the team has proven true.

Just watched an every snap cut up to watch JBB. I thought he actually played pretty well. He wasn't asked to do a ton; was mostly on their DEs and not OLBs. Did cave a DE on an off tackle power it looked like, but otherwise was not super powerful. But, he was really good at staying on his blocks. Stayed in front and stayed engaged. Took on Watt once or twice in pass, availed himself admirably, gave up one pressure that ended with the OLB diving at Speight's ankles. He did lose his man on a late reverse which is why that got blown up. The one holding call accepted on him was kind of BS in my opinion. One thing I noticed early is that he tends to keep his hands outside which asks for holding calls. But he stays in front of his man and moves his feet so he can get away with that instead of leaning.

what I don't understand, is why we aren't bombing it deep, with the wrs we have. darboh, Chesson, even Harris. Seems like they always have a few steps in the cb, so why not bomb it...
