Who has UW Badger alumni friends?

Submitted by Flying Dutchman on

I have about a half dozen good friends that are UW Badger alumni and passionate fans.   They have rightly enjoyed the recent success UW has had in both football and basketball.  Wisconsin grads (that I know) tend to be really good and bright people with successful careers and lives, much like Michigan grads.

This week, they are like the anti-Sparty.   After walking in to East Lansing and pounding MSU, these Badger fans somehow think they are going to walk in to a curbstomping in Ann Arbor delivered by JMFH and the Wolverines.  They don't think it will be close, and in Michigan's favor.

I realize Michigan is favored by around 10/11, but I just don't get it from my Badger buddies.  I too believe Michigan will win, but probably in more of a grind and a narrow outcome.   These guys aren't bluffing.   Why do they expect to be blown out?    Do your Badger friends/acquaintences/associates behave the same?

Wisconsin was one of the schools I road-tripped to in undergrad (for the 1999 Wisconsin game, I think), and I got treated worse there than I did at any other B1G school I visited for a road game, including OSU and MSU. So I don't have a whole lot of affinity for Wisconsin or its fans.

Having said that, I definitely don't think this game will be a blowout. I expect that Michigan will win, but not by more than two touchdowns.

I know one couple who are both originally from way back in the Wisconsin farmlands and both UW alums.  And both absolutely saintly people.  They'll be mostly rooting for UW but they adopted U-M as their hometown team to root for when they moved here (a long time ago) so they won't be real burned up if Michigan wins.

except for the assholes who trash cars and RV's with Michigan license plates, Wisci fans are awesome, self-depractaing and humble.  And Camp Randall is so awesome.

Since I live in Madison, it seems all of my friends are have a connection to UW in one way or another. The Alumni who are, say, older than 26 remember all the bad/crazy experiences that UW had in Ann Arbor. To quote my buddy Matt "we've had some pretty hard times in Ann Arbor".  They too are being very reserved about their chances.

However, those younger (and I'm around a lot of students) seem to remember only the last time we played  and that was our lose in Madison in 2010: 48-28. IF they even remember that game, So they are very, very optimisitc. Wisconsin has upset many teams over the past six years and they think they can pull this one off too. Heck, they  don't think it would be an upset as they think UW should be ranked higher than M as they have defeated two Top 10 teams.

It's been a fun week for me here being the odd man out. 99% of the Badger fans that I interact with are very fun and cool people. Go Blue!

I think they're just being cautiously optimistic. They predict a pounding because they've seen their offensive output is really mediocre (16 pts against LSU, less than 20 against GA st, and only 14 OFFENSIVE pts against MSU). They should predict very few offensive pts, but their defense and turnovers could keep them in the game. If Speight and receivers are not connecting well, it could be a close one.

I'm shocked the spread is 10.5.  But what do I know, Vegas isn't built on the backs of winners.

Shocking to hear your Wisky acquaintances are expecting a beat down, I would not expect that.  That team is big and sneaky quick.  This could be close and a good test for Michigan.

I'm the only U-M guy in the office.  There are a couple of PSU and Sparty alums.  Lots of CU and CSU since I'm in Colorado but I digress.  The Penn State guys were really obnoxious about JoePa up until this year and have finally come to the understanding that everyone looks at their school through the eyes of the football program and it itsn't good.

The Sparties here can go fuck themselves for all I care.

Yeah, none of them are saying ANYTHING...it's weird...the loud ones were talking crap to me about Michigan, pre-season, but radio silence lately.  I only  talk CFB with a few of my friends...the ones that I know I can have rational dialogue with after years of experience.  OH, and you guys too...and Maize n Brew...and Magnus.  Have a great weekend y'all!

Since she grew up in A2, I could understand her wanting to get out of town.

She doesn't give two shits about any sports, including football. We went to the 2002 game here and she was basically rooting for UM anyhow.

She did have a part-time job at a UW rec sports facility that the football team had access to, and she said that Barry Alvarez was an arrogant dick.

Agree on their being somewhat humble and even a little pessimistic despite their recent BB and FB success. Strong enough academics that their grads are generally smart enough to appreciate UM's academic prowess. "Madtown" is a great Saturday destination to visit for a game. Heavy partying, no real physical threats and many of the fans will really talk football.
