ESPN Fluff: something "different" about Harbaugh at Big Ten Media Days this year

Submitted by unWavering on

This is one of the fluffiest of fluff pieces, but ESPN's Brian Bennett is at the Big Ten Media Days, and has noted that there is "something different" about Harbaugh's demeanor at Big Ten Media Days this year.

At this same event last year, Harbaugh was evasive and even difficult at times during his interview sessions. He refused to give many specific answers to the media horde looking to lap up the story of his return to college football. On Monday, though, he was playful and animated, willing to talk at length about his team and other issues.

Money quote (emphasis mine):

"We have big hopes," Harbaugh said. "We've got big dreams. We've got lofty goals. And all those are achievable."

There are also a couple good tidbits from Jourdan Lewis.  It's pretty clear that Harbaugh has the team feeling confident going into this year, and they truly believe they can win it all.  Hopefully, that confidence translates to results.

Is Bennett reading into something that isn't there, or does Harbaugh feel like we have a shot to win it all this year?  Perhaps a bit of both.

Because it was his 1st year and he was still fielding stupid questions about when he might go back to the league. He had a lot more question marks about the team he would have. This year, he's like "whatcha got for me?"

Loved it when they brought up the rap video and "Harbaugh insisted that only "uptight white people" didn't like it. He even claimed to have written one of the song's lyrics ("Roughest team in the B-I-G!)." Harbs also continued to say that his first response is "YES" when asked to participate.  HARBAAAUUUGGHHH!!!! Go Blue!

Also love that he is rocking the hat and suit combo!!!!

The new standard in college football is national championships. That wasn't the case in Bo's era, but if Harbaugh wants to surpass him, he must win at least two. As far as best of all time, he needs three to be in the same boat as Saban and Meyer. I honestly believe he can win at least two if he stays here for a decade.

Coach Harbaugh is the man, and he knows it.  Not only does he get to coach high level football, but he gets to set the standards.

He is a family guy, with a great job in a great family town.    The idea that he is in Ann Arbor, and staying in Ann Arbor, when he could easily have an NFL job (I understand Oakland is still in play).........that has to be pretty compelling to recruits and their families.

We need to send Jed York an annual thank you note for letting Jim come home while he is still young.

"We want to dream those dreams so much that people will laugh at us," he said. "If they're not laughing at us, then we haven't set high enough goals."

Harbaugh was at his amusing best on Monday. But few people are laughing at the Wolverines' aspirations these days.

If our QB situation doesn't pan out, anything is possible. Although, to go 9-3 we would have to lose @ MSU, Iowa and OSU. I have a hard time seeing a Harbaugh coached team lose every one of those games. There's just no way a player like Peppers will go out with zero wins against our rivals. Not happening!

And there has to be a comfort level that is much different than last year. Sure he loved Michigan, and it was his home, but now he knows every piece intricately. He really is home--like after you've moved in and you finally have every single box unpacked, and you know where everything is. He knows every player and recruit and all the staff members well; and where those pieces fit. He's seen them in his system live. He's had time to get buy-in and influence. His family is settled and he is settled. It completely makes sense and I'm glad it shows.

He was interviewed by Taylor Zarzour and Greg McElroy from Sirius College Sports morning show. They both raved about him all morning saying he was the best interview they have ever done.  They now see what we all know in that Harbaugh is very genuine and just loves football more than anyone else.

It was good to hear them gush about this as many of the listeners of that show are SEC honks that hate Harbaugh and think he is a phony and full of antics.  They always call in and complain about him and satelite camps....blah blah blah. Slowly the world is learning about who he really is.

I want and think this team can be great. But, I just really, really want, no- need them to beat Buckeyes this year. If they are good enough to do that, then they will be good enough to have beaten Staee and Iowa. I just can't shake the game last year out of my head. No matter how many times I watch the bowl game. OSU would have done the same damage to that Florida team. I know, I know, this is the new age of college football. You have to talk national championships. Fuck that. Beat Ohio St! Cream Ohio St!! Do that, and then I'll have a submarine load of confidence.

I'm with you. I'll be more satisfied if we beat Ohio State and miss the Playoff than if we lose to Ohio State and somehow still make the Playoff. I don't know too many Ohio State fans who felt jubilant in 1996 when they went 11-1 and won the Rose Bowl.

While Harbaugh is at the helm, there will be plenty of chances to play for a national championship. But the pw3nage by the Buckeyes needs to end now.

I'm with you, my friend.

I would more than happily (at this point) take beating OSU but missing the playoff over sneaking into the playoff but losing to OSU. Would feel like we just don't belong there.

But we just need to find a way to beat them, plain and simple. I don't care if its an ugly game where we toss 5 picks and cough up 3 fumbles. As long as the scoreboard reads Michigan having more points, then I'll find a way to get over that. Losing 13 of the last 15 tries is inexcusable. Hell, I think even Purdue has beaten OSU more times in that stretch than we have. And that's saying something.
