OT: Euro 2016
Final Group E and F matches today. Highlights include underdogs Iceland and Hungary trying to win the group, Ronaldo being Ronaldo and what is likely to be Zlatan's last competitive match for Sweden.
And Hungary's goalkeeper's Sweatpants.
Standings going into today's matches:
12pm
Hungary - Portugal (ESPN)
Iceland - Austria (ESPN2)
3pm
Italy - Ireland (ESPN)
Sweden - Belgium (ESPN2)
Given Ronaldo's vocal petulance over the course of this Euro (blame everyone but himself for the lackluster results), I'm pulling for Hungary.
And Ibrahimovic makes watching Sweden a treat. Like watching Portugal (a star-led team), but with 100% less douchiness. (Well, maybe 80%.) When Ibrahimvovic retires, I think he'd make an excellent Dread Pirate Roberts, but in the meantime his club career has been fantastic and I'd love for him to lead his national team to the knockout stage.
like Messi did vs the US yesterday. Iceland is remarkable since the country has only 330,000 people! Hungary revolutionized soccer in the 1950's with the Magical Magyars who invented total football. The last 30+ years have been pitifully bad winning absolutely nothing. Sort of the Cleveland story soccer. Ironic because Cleveland has the major concentration of Hungarians in the US.
And yes Kiraly's pants and general look make him appear as if he was dragged out of a Sunday O40 beer league.
for comparsions sake, Washtenaw County has about 345,000 residents
Even crazier is that as many as 30,000 Icelanders have been reported in France for the tournament. One-tenth of the country's population!
The wall of blue for their matches is incredible.
As I was typing "they are playing well" they score. 1-0 Iceland!
I wish the final group games didn't have to be aired at the same time. Blast those 1982 West Germans and Austrians.
Remember when ESPN3 had the split screen option? They should have never taken that away.
Iceland called for a penalty and then Dragovic misses it wide. Defenders taking penalties....whhhyyy.
Portugal ties it 1-1 just before halftime.
What is the success rate for penalties in this tournament? I've seen at least three misses (Portugal, Spain, Austria).
The second half of Hungary-Portugal is insane. 3-2 Hungarians.
Hungary Portugal LIT FAM.
Ronaldo was going insane after that last goal.
1-1. Doesn't change anything if things hold (they won't)
Ronaldo header and it's 3-3. Wow.
You were expecting it eventually, right?
If these scores hold, I believe the standings will be Hungary 1st, Portugal 2nd, Iceland 3rd and Austria last, with the first three qualifying. Portugal would get the nod over Iceland due to total goals scored. Portugal and England would then play each other.
I believe that's exactly right (if things hold, which they won't based on this Hun/Por match)
I think it might stand. For Hungary, there is no meaningful difference between winning and tying, so they may as well park the bus for the last few minutes.
Iceland win! Iceland vs England on Monday. Come On Iceland!
Hungary rings it off the bar!!

I hate being stuck in pointless meetings.
Holy smokes - Iceland wins in the 94th minute!
ICELAND WINS IN STOPPAGE TIME!
"Oh no, we still suck" -Austria probably
Hell yeah Iceland! Hope they destroy England.
But Iceland's on FIRE
You never know when this Iceland team might . . . . . erupt.
So Portgual will face Croatia, England vs Iceland and Hungary get the Group F runner-up
So it’s Ireland vs Italy for what feels like the millionth time. Ireland needs a win, which means they will likely draw. So off I go to a Republican (Irish Republican) sympathetic bar to watch this. God I hope there will be singing.
