Sam Webb has a new "gut feeling" re: D-line starters

Submitted by SAMgO on

His ever-reliable "gut feeling" on Week 1 starters as it stands:

Ones: Gary - Wormley - Glasgow - Taco

Twos: Marshall - Hurst - Mone - Winovich

My prediction for Week 1 vs Hawai'i:

SDE: Wormley 3T: Hurst NT: Glasgow WDE: Taco

SDE: Gary 3T: Godin NT: Mone WDE: Marshall (I'm still not buying he's 275. Did not look even 260 at the Spring Game)

the ones and twos are likely both going to play alot.  Look for this to really be a factor come the 3rd and 4th quarter when the OL of our opponents is getting worn down and our DL is still fresh.  Just the Sacks, baby!

I am surprised, and yet unsurprised, about his thought of Gary's starting. Look, clearly Rashan is a great player and will be a force (assuming he pans out), but even the best high school kids need some development. I predicted that he would be starting mid-season, but hey, if he is ready to start by game one, I'm perfectly fine with that. When injuries are not a factor, the best players start and if Harbaugh and his coaches feel he is ready, bring him on.

I have a gut feeling(*) we're running a 7-1-3 next year.  ALL of the DL's will start, Peppers plays Mike/Sam/Will, and then 3 corners.  AND NO ONE SHALL PASS.  (literally and figuratively.)

It's like the photoshop pic with a dozen QBs... only we'll have dozens of DLs.

(*) My gut this morning may also be feeling the chorizo & eggs with plenty of Cholula sauce I had this AM.  I'm not sayin', I'm jus' sayin'.

it's interesting he has a different take the day after Brian gave his. I tend to think Brian is right but Sam has connections. regarless, they will be very good. The one thing that I don't get is why don't we have a guy in the 250 range that just gets after the qb. Calhoun played at around 6'5 245 and he was a PIA. Our wde guys are pretty big and if they she'd a few lbs maybe they could play faster. while I fell this defense will be outstanding. they lacked some big play ability last year. not enough turnovers and sacks.

This might be true because you never know, but Glasgow is more proven than Mone. Mone is all potential right now, and this defense fell apart a little bit when we lost Glasgow. Personally, I think Glasgow is the full-year starter unless that pec injury flares up again.

not even Sams gut feelings. We almost lost to Indy and Minny respectively with Glasgow out last year. My memory has proved itself shorter each year but I do remember without Glasgow last year beating anyone became a dicey proposition.. There weren't going to be anymore shutouts thats for sure, I wish he would have made it back for Ohilo State to at least keep the score closer and not such a kick in the stomache.

I know we all like Sam and I;m sure he isn't pulling this out of his ass but no coach would say a true freshman that hasn't practiced with the team yet is already a starter.  They might say that is what they hope happens based on ideal positions for each player, but that doesn't mean it will look that way in practice.

Nobody "is" a starter at this point. If Chris Wormley shows up to camp at 350 lbs. or if Taco Charlton decides to cut 30 lbs. to look good on the beach this summer, then things could change. You never know.

But coaches do go into a season saying "I think Player X will be a starter at Position Y." Sam Webb has sources on the staff, so it wouldn't be surprising at all if one of the coaches said, "Hey, man, I think Gary is going to be starting at Anchor this fall. That's what Don Brown has been talking about around the building."

Boom. Gut feelinged.

What's kind of nice about Harbaugh Year 2 is that he & his staff won't have to do a total roster re-evaluation from top to bottom & can focus on other things instead.

Don't get me wrong--I'm sure they'll have the kids re-compete for jobs and notice who stepped it up and who has slacked off. But having more institutional knowledge about the kids on the roster has to be a big help to the coaching staff.  They'll be able to "pencil in" several of the starting positions more efficiently and spend the raminder of the time doing other things--coaching up the kids, developing plays/schemes, recruiting, etc.

Is it really? He's still behind Glasgow and nobody is legitimately complaining about that. How could you knock him on his career stats? He's been hurt too long to accumulate more. But (assuming he stays healthy) it's not at all unrealistic to expect him to heavily contribute this year.

I'm not knocking him for his career stats. They're totally fine for a redshirt sophomore who played as a freshman and then missed his second year. I'm saying people are expecting too much from him as a guy coming off an injury, who looked out of shape in the spring, and who's playing behind a high-quality fifth-year senior.

or wanted to but we don't so we won't. We had 3 shutouts last year anyone care to guess if we get any this year.

It doesn't take a gut feeling to know that salad makes for lousy leftovers. Especially at the Hotel Putingrad.....er Scratch that I would not eat anything left over from any hotel in Putins mother land.

I just hope Godin goes back to SDE and gets a chance to break into that second line.  At this point I'd be surprised if Marshall could beat out Godin at that spot.

Our secondary is nasty too.  Hopefully Peppers is utilized appropriately as to minimize the weakest link of this defense (linebacking) while still being able to float around and wreak havoc both downfield and behind the line of scrimmage.

I actually think our LB's will be pretty good. They'll be aided by the best DL and DB groups in the nation, but I'd guess they play at at least a B+ level. Ben Gedeon will be fine. Decent, not great. I think Mike McCray *barring injury* will be the nicest surprise on this team. He can be a B+/A- big ten backer. Then you have Peppers in that Sam/Nickel role. When you put them behind our DL, plus the coverage we will have. I don't think our LB play will hamper us too much.

Not to say I told you so, but I told you so! Been saying on this board for months Gary would start day 1. He's the best DL prospect ever scouted since the rankings era. Thinking he would need a one year apprenticeship behind Taco or Wormley was silly. The days of stud freshman needing to come in and learn are over. Can't wait to see Gary unleash hell.
