OT: Chan Gailey down on Devin Smith (indirectly takes shot at OSU)

I'm always surprised at how little current coaches complain about this.  It's got to be frustrating for them to be teaching things they should have spent the last four years learning.

“He’s struggled integrating into the whole system,” Gailey said. “He did certain things in college that were in their system, and getting involved in the whole system [with the Jets] — it’s been a longer process than any of us thought it would be.

“He’s just got a lot to learn and a lot to work on to this point,” Gailey added. “He’s got talent. We obviously all see that. If he’ll just keep working, things will happen good for him in the future. But he’s just got to keep working.”

Two other problems for Smith are that Ohio State’s system didn’t call for him to learn defenses or concern himself with the entire offense, in stark contrast to the Jets.

“He’s got a lot of work to do about reading coverages and reading [the details] of man coverage,” Gailey said. “All those things are important, and he’s just never had to do that.”

I don't know if the QB situation is quite that contrived. I think Meyer was having a very hard time convincing himself and others that their national championship-winning QB should be benched in favor of the guy who lost to Virginia Tech. Why fix it if it ain't broke? Then when things weren't going so well for Jones this season, it made sense to go back to the guy who was so prolific last year.

But isn't there another side to this arguement, "Protect it, so it isn't broke and you don't have to fix it."

It seemed to me, especially when it was the "Cardale starts but JT is more of a redzone weapon" that it was always about limiting the exposure of Barrett because running that offense hurts!

Heck didn't Chris Leak get hurt at florida running Herbz offense and that's how Tebow got his PT?

Chad Henne got hurt, too. Denard Robinson stayed healthy in 2010 and 2011 (except for a short stretch of time here or there, such as against Illinois). Then he got hurt in 2012. Devin Gardner stayed healthy for all of 2013 (except the bowl game) and 2014. Injuries are something you're going to have to deal with, regardless. Shane Morris started only one game in 2014, and he got a concussion before the end of that game.

This feels like a common complaint of most college WRs.  Smith was an elite athlete who ran away from guys as much as he ran great routes; lots of college WRs are like that.  I don't like OSU, but spread offenses are no better/worse at producing top-flight NFL talent.  And him not caring/learning about the rest of the offensive gameplan is more a personal thing that some indictment of what offense he played in in college.

to Corey Smith here at the Carolina Panthers as well.  He's still not where he should be after being here for a while.  That said, Funchess isn't exactly well rounded either.  He has a long way to go, but I know he'll work out with Proehl as his coach

Screw that noise. College Football is it's own beautiful game. Colleges are not a minor league system for the NFL. Either draft someone who slides right into your system, or prepare to actually do your job and coach players up.

Same thing goes for the quarterbacks. Just because you want them to be Peyton Manning right out of the box doesn't mean you can bitch and moan when you actually have to teach a QB how to be better. Bunch of whiney babies.

I rather enjoyed reading this. This is a potential talking point for recruits that want to be successful in the NFL. You can go to a party school with a lush offense and lose credibility. A better option is getting a recognized degree and proper instruction from coaches that know what it takes to flourish in the NFL.

Devin Smith was never much of a route runner at Ohio State. He was never a ball control guy.

I expect Michael Thomas to go in the first 3 rounds this year. So, I mean, if guys keep getting drafted then I'm not sure what there is to say about it.

The prevalance of spread schemes in college is impacting O Line as well as these kids only know read option zone and cant run block or pass protect at all.

The spread is making these kids soft and they can't handle the NFL

It's more on Smith than Ohio State/their system.  He was never a route runner, just basically went deep every play or caught quick screens.  If it were the system, I wouldn't think Michael Thomas would be the top ranked WR for the '16 NFL draft and a 1st rounder.  He, unlike Smith can do it all.

Calvin Johnson played at a school where they utilized their WR as an extra outside blocker in their triple option scheme...
