Best seats in the Big House?

Submitted by Gil From Omaha on
My Dad and I are going to the BYU game for my first game in the Big House after a quick pit stop in Chicago Friday for a Cubs game. What section and rows are the best for us? We like to be close and around the 40-40 yard lines; not too close but you can see the whole field without being in the upper part of the bowl. What areas would you reccomend? Go Blue!

All these comments beg the question . . . how good really are those expensive suites and box seats?

Before they put them in, you would not say that a seat at the very top of the bowl is a good seat.  Are you really just enjoying the high-class amenities from a bad seat, or are they actually good seats to watch a game from?

I sat on the fifty for the first game after 9/11. My dad's office partner wasn't using his tickets and everyone else was sitting in our normal seats, so I just went up and used these. They were up high, right behind the railing for the entrance tunnel at the top of the bowl. It was perfect. No one in front of me, I was on the 50... Totally awesome.

We also got tickets for whatever reason about twenty rows up on the press box side, again on the 50, for the 1994 Michigan State game. Those were perfect. That was also the game Gerald Ford's number was retired, so we had a front-row view of the ceremony at halftime.

As for the people who say there isn't a bad seat... Try sitting in the front row or two behind either of the benches.

This seems oddly specific for someone who's never been to the stadium before. I'd encourage you to be a little more flexible about where you sit, because most seats really aren't bad. I'm not sure what's wrong with the upper part of the bowl; you get a better view of the entire field that way.

We were in section 22, row 67 and it  was great. We had a direct sightline to Harbaugh, which I value highly. But anyway, like everyone is saying, there are no bad seats in the big house.

Anyway, have fun ... I'm jealous you're going to the BYU game.

I know someone else suggested the visitor's side, but having sat in various locations, I really prefer the home side of the field.  There is nothing more exciting than hearing the band play the M Fanfare.  Plus, the sun won't be in your eyes.

I've always enjoyed end zone seats at any football venue. Yeah, the play might not be in your end, but I find it enjoyable to see how plays develop, holes open (or close) from that perspective.

To beat a dead horse, there's not a bad seat in that stadium

I mean obviously sideline seating is better than endzone (but there truly is no bad seat in the Big House unlike many stadiums).

That said between rows 45 and 60 are the best rows. If you're lower it's cool to be closer, but the Big House feels smaller and you don't have the best sightlines. I would sit maybe in section 44 because you can see the student section and hear the band well.

Cheer loudly when BYU is on defense and Go Blue!

I'll be in Chi town, Friday, for the Cubbies game too.

My dad used to live in Chicago and used to go to games all the time. It will be my first Cubs game. We're both pumped.

Other than that. I sat in section 2, row 75 last weekend. Not horrible, but you should either go 5+ rows higher or go 5 rows lower. You won't have to try to look over the wheelchairs. I believe they sit between row 71-72 in the aisle area in front of the stands.

There's another wheelchair section about 10-15 rows down from there too.

But if you want to miss the wheelchair sections all together, sit on the home side.

For me, the best seats are in or near the student section.  Boring old guy story: a few years after I graduated, I went back for a game.  I thought why not?  Spring for some good seats between the 40 yards lines.  What a mistake.  I was surrounded by alumni even older than me who had no clue how to enjoy a college football game.  They didn't sing the fight song; they didn't bang their keys together on third down; they barely paid attention to the game.  What they did do is socialize with each other and smoke like human chimneys.  I don't think you have to worry about the smoking part in these new, more enlightened times, but do yourself a favor, get near people who are there to watch the game.  This is at the core of the Brandon debacle.
