Tate Bashing

Submitted by Ziff72 on
Was I watching a different 12 games this year?? I saw some Tate bashing on the liveblog and on some posts the last couple of weeks. For the people that are down on him, I ask you what do you want?? The kid was a true freshmen who lead some pretty gutsy comebacks. He was hurt for 2/3 of the season, his center was hurt, his top RB was hurt, his #2 rb was hurt, his line wilted on their pass protection and their is still talk of wanting Gardner in there. His accuarcy was remakable for a true frosh and he should get a lot healthier and stronger in the offseason. I think this kid will be a M legend before he is done, not replaced.

I will send this post to some of my friends. Please don't say all two of them that would be really lame and so 80's. So they can get a kick get out of this. Not because of my statements but because of the blind faith in this forum. But hey the tooth fairy, santa claus, and the easter bunny just called me so I gotta go.

he definitely had some flashes of brilliance (that play in one of the early games where he pointed the receiver into the endzone was incredible). but there is no question that his decision-making could use improvement, which is obviously expected of a freshman. But there is really no excuse for putting the ball on the ground as often as he did. Hopefully he'll be able to clean that up going into next season.

Tate had no problem running the offense this year, throwing for 2000+ yards is pretty good for a true frosh on a VERY young team. Give him time, Im sure everybody wants him to gain weight, but we can wait (at least 1-2 more years) for him to continue to develope into the great QB that he WILL be.

i'm not gonna bash the kid but lets not say "what else did you want from him?", because that can be answered pretty easily. 1) he could have refrained from dropping the ball multiple times without being touched throughout the course of the season. 2) he could have improved his decision making at some point during the season (i.e. running around in the backfield holding the ball like its a tennis ball) Not trying to rip on Tate here, but I think its a big stretch to say he couldn't have done more (even as a freshman).

The discussion a week ago was not Tate bashing- that is incorrect. The gist of the discussion was simply this: RR's spread offense is geared more toward the run and prefers a running quaterback. Tate is more of a passer, however RR's passing game doesn't seem to be one of the better passing schemes in college football. So the question was raised- Is Tate the right guy for this offense? There was no Tate bashing, no ripping him for being a freshman. No one downplayed his talents. He is a good quarterback and will only get better.

in pryors "breakout" game that will get the heisman hype train rolling he had a career high 23 completions and 266 yards. in tates SECOND game as a true fresh he had 23 completions for 240 yards. anyone who can't recognize that potential is blind.

he regressed throughout the season, there is no doubt about that. how injured he was will forever be a mystery. how big an impact molk/minor/brown being out will as well. his on field production has a ways to go if he wants to hold off gardner for an entire season.

Look, the guy is short. Short and slow. The 2 kisses of death. He is so short that he can't see to the second level of receivers UNLESS he runs to one side of the field or the other. That is a huge limitation for any offense. And his limited height and visibility.... combined with him having a weak arm..... causes him to constantly miss receivers at the second level. He missed them all season long. And he missed them badly! Missed them by 5 yards or more. Wasn't even close on his intermediate or deep passes. The guy is accurate ONLY within the dink and dunk offense that we have to play with him at quarterback. Dink and dunk! Anything downfield and the guy is way off target. HE IS NOT ACCURATE AT ALL. Just about all his touchdown passes were quick, short passes with the receiver having to make plays to get the ball into the endzone. TATE HAS ALLEGEDLY ALREADY THREATENED TO TRANSFER. And based upon the actions of his parents and brothers, I believe the report. This guy and has family have a history of demanding what they want, and if they dont get it, taking their ball and running home. Can you say, Craig James??!! There is a reason why Rich Rod leaked it out that Tate wasn't getting it done in the classroom. A very strange move for a head coach. Even the commentators stated that they thought that was strange. And there is a reason why Rich Rod calls Tate, "Hollywood". And last time I checked, Hollywood is not in San Diego. It is because of Tate's drama, acting out, bratty behavior and histrionics.... vis a vis Hollywood. It is obvious to me that Rich Rod doesn't really respect him. And who would if you had to deal with this guy, his family and his sense of entitlement. We don't need spoiled, bratty, rich kids playing quarterback for UM. We need men! Michigan "Men"! As soon as the cold weather hit, this little guy was bundled up as if he were playing football in the North Pole or something. This little guy can't cut it in the midwest or the Big 10. Time for "Little Man Tate" to do what he and his family do best.... take their ball and run home.

http://www.detnews.com/article/20100104/OPINION03/1040369/Devin-Gardner… http://www.freep.com/article/20100102/HSS/100102012/1054/SPORTS06/Devin… The Black team coach, former NFL coach Sam Wyche, raved about Gardner in the ESPN game notes. DETNEWS Quote "Devin is going to be a big-time player at Michigan," Wyche said. "He and (Alabama commitment) Phillip Sims are guys to me that are going to come quickly to the scene. Devin has a great smile. He is going to sell a lot of product for somebody. He's got a great personality. He's smart -- you can change directions with him and it doesn't bother him at all. He is ready to go." Freep Quote “Devin is going to be a big-time player at Michigan,” Wyche said. “He's got a great personality. He's going to sell a lot of product for somebody. He can change directions, no problem and (the pressure) doesn't bother him. He and Phillip Sims are going to be the early comers to the show quick.” I guess you guys would give the former super bowl coach negative points if he said the same thing on this board. The truth is that the kid is bigger, faster, stronger, and SMARTER. If he makes it to spring practice he will have no problem picking up the offense. I'll bet on any former U of D Jesuit kid (2 years) having no problem with the mental part of the game. The main reason he left was because U of D had a terrible team that never won a game while he was there. He went to Inkster HS because the former St Martin De Porres staff took over the football program. Obviously he made the right choice. I have bashed Tate because some of his flaws but the kid is going to really have to humble himself. Against elite competition is when most of his bad habits show up. He's going to learn how to pull back a times and just manage the game. He's never going to be the best athlete on the field on this level like he was in high school. IMO RichRod is going to look the situation much like Tressel did with Boeckman. He's going to go with the guy who can help him right now while having the higher ceiling at the same time. The standards at OSU are winning BCS games and NC's period. You can down Oregon all you want but that is the same program that recently beat Michigan twice. The last loss at the Big House was more embarrassing than the App State loss. IMO that was Lloyd's final nail in the coffin. I'm looking forward to next year. Hopefully Devin can get to spring practice and we can have a true competition. My the best player win.
