OT - NBA Draft

Submitted by 615Wolverine on
The past couple of years have been fun for us seeing our beloved Wolverines going early in the first round. I'm glad we don't have anyone in the draft and all of our under class men returned. With that being said it looks like it's going to be a busy night with many trade rumors. My Lakers I believe will set the tone for the rest of the first round. I want them to draft Jahlil Okafor but there are rumors we may go with Russell from Ohio. It will be a fun night, including the Jazz who are shopping our Trey Burke hard. ESPN 7PM, enjoy.

I think Russell will be a fine NBA player, but I think there are legitimate concerns about his athleticism on both ends of the court.  He's a great scorer, but it seemed like he could be slowed down by athletic 2/3s, and the NBA is lousy with those guys.

Towns will be great in Minny with Wiggins, though.  If the Wolves were in the East I'd peg them a top-5 conference team.

I know the Lakers want to win now, but I'd have gone for Okafor.  You can get guys that are 75% of what Russell will be much easier than 75% of what Okafor will be.  And for all the talk about Aldridge, he's nearing 30 and has played a lot of minutes both in college and the pros.  He's very skilled, but big men can go quickly if the wheels fall off.

Okafor is not a good defender and has some character issues. There were coaches at Duke that reportedly bad mouthed him and said he doesn't really love basketball, and he wants it "his way or not at all." His body hasn't developed, and even though he's put in a lot of work on his post game, he hasn't put in the work in the weight room or on the track, working on his body, which shows.

I recognize that, but he still has an advanced post game and if motiviated, he has the frame that can add good muscle and really be dominant in the paint.  Okafor doesn't play great defense, but Russell only showed flashes of it as well.  I'm not saying either will be a star (this draft seems full of good players but I'm not seeing superstars), but I love skilled big men over athletic guards/wings because it is much harder to guard the prior than the latter.

Every time I see him on TV, it seems like he's angling for a big-time job at Duke.  I know he has connections and likes being on TV, but he panders to Dukies in a way that I don't expect.  Jalen can be bad about that as well, but he seems to have a bit more restraint (except when talking about the Fab 5).

At work and will randomly check the thread as it's faster than the ESPN app, so if someone wants to be awesome, could they post each pick for me? All the upvotes belong to you once I get home.
