Penn State shenanigans continue
In the latest episode of 'We Only Care About Wins,' Penn State will be wearing "409" on their hockey helments tonight with the basketball team wearing "409" T-shirts tomorrow for their warm-ups. Disgusting if you ask me.

I've maintained all along that the death penalty for a year was the only punishment that truly fit the crime. Only that would drive home the point that their priorities had become completely misplaced. To just take away a bunch of scholarships and vacate a certain number of games seemed arbitrary and missing the point. And now even that flimsy punishment is gone.

I still think Joe Paterno got some unfair treatment. There is doubt about whether or not he was actively part of a cover-up and the most you can really blame him for is not doing enough. None of us will ever truly know if Joe Pa was in the wrong or not, but I have a hard time feeling good about condemning a man who died before he could even present a defense for himself.
The reason I say this is because I put myself in Paterno's shoes and I dont know what I wouldve done. If someone told me that a person that I hired was doing something like that, I would be deeply disturbed, no doubt, but I dont think I would run directly to the police. Obviously, now knowing how the Penn St. case turned out, I would take the case to law enforcement, but if I didnt know any better, I would probably tell my boss what I was told (remember, Paterno didnt actually witness anything), I would want to talk to the man who was accused and ask him what is going on, and I would probably monitor the situation much close than Paterno did. But Paterno told his bosses what he was told. Legally, he did what he needed to do. Yes, you can question whether or not he shouldve done more, but I dont think that means we can just trash the man for handling the case correctly by our legal standards.

Some of the righteous indignation on here goes way too far. None of us know exactly who said what to whom. If Paterno's intent was a coverup, why did he report it at all? How do we know that he wasn't told by the AD that the incident was investigated and turned out to be not what McQuery thought it was?
Paterno used very poor judgment in not following up up more than he did. Cowardly? I would say so. More concerned about protecting his reputation than protecting kids from being raped? Boy, I dunno. I need more evidence before I pronounce him worthy of eternal damnation as some of the more omniscient posters on here do.
Now the 409 stuff is disrespectful, stupid and tone deaf.
January 17th, 2015 at 3:35 AM ^
yeah, the 409 stuff just seems kinda dumb.

the creep factor for being told, 'hey coach, sandusky's in the shower lathering up a little boy' (or something to that effect) is so far off the chart and so repulsive that if the reaction isn't extreme caution and laser-like vigilence at an absolute minimum, then joepa was part of the child molestation culture at PSU. joepa owns this hook, line and sinker.
January 17th, 2015 at 3:35 AM ^
well are we gonna go after the first man who saw it for "not doing enough" when he couldve went and beat the crap out of sandusky on the spot and rescued the kid? i dont hear anyone saying that he "didnt do enough"...joepa did exactly what mcquery did, he told his boss. joepa didnt actually see it. mcquery did (at least i think thats the name of the guy who first saw it). that man shouldnt went straight to the police/media/etc..
i dont, in any way, mean to be insensitive to the victims, because they are all too often forgotten in cases like this, but there are plenty of people who should have their reputations ruined if joepa deserved to have his ruined.
January 17th, 2015 at 7:16 AM ^
right at that moment, i.e., break that up and say 'dude, what the heck are you doing? get away from that little boy!' but joepa at that time is a near-deity and he told joepa immediately. it's joepa's locker room, it's joepa's team, at the time he'd been there something like 35 years when it first came out and joepa had won the nat'l championship. what i'm saying is that joepa was virtually the master of the universe as far as penn state went back then and joepa could've made any edict he wanted and it would've been followed without question.
January 17th, 2015 at 11:41 AM ^
i think youre idolizing him a bit too much. he was still a regular guy. if it were me, i wouldve had no idea what to do. if i told my bosses i wouldve just assumed everything would get handled (kinda like what mcquery did, right?). and mcquery was the one who actually saw it, so if he felt like there wasnt enough getting done, then he shouldve done something about it. paterno didnt even see it take place. he was told by a second hand source.

His own son, Jay, admitted JoePa was told once about an "extremely sexual" stuation in the showers. Knowing once should be enough.

you raise an excellent point, but i dont know man. again, if im joepa, i come back to a point where i am being told what happened, i tell my boss and get the guy out of my locker room/program. thats what joepa did. paterno probably doesnt get anywhere with the police. what evidence would he have? he would need a victim to come foward, and nobody did at the time.
January 17th, 2015 at 3:39 AM ^
i dont know man...i feel like that might be the way i wouldve handled it. tell my boss and get the guy out of the program. and i honestly wouldve have thought that was the wrong way to do it. ...i just honestly wouldnt have known how to go to the police...you have no evidence. its all based on something one guy saw. if joepa tells the police and the witness is lying, then he looks like an idiot. if he tells the police and he doesnt have any proof, he looks like an idiot...i dont see where you win by going to the police. ..just tell your boss and let them figure it out. then get the guy out of the program in any way you can. to me, that ends the situation.
January 16th, 2015 at 11:56 PM ^
McQueary witnessed it and should have beat the crap out of Sandusky and helped that kid out.
January 17th, 2015 at 3:50 AM ^
thas what im saying. paterno shouldve first heard about it when he saw sandusky walk into his office with a black eye and a busted lip.

Im not excusing it at all. Dont start making false claims.
The way I see it, I wouldve felt uncomfortable with the whole thing. I wouldve wanted to have as little to do with it as possible so that my name doesnt get dragged into it. I would tell my boss, find a way to remove the coach from the program if I could (you would need a legit reason to fire him). Im not sure how I wouldve approached the police. Just call 9-1-1 and say that their might have been a rape in my locker room? Then what? I have no evidence that it happened. I end up looking stupid. A victim needed to come forward at the time (I dont mean to sound like victim blaming because I dont mean it in that way at all. Im just saying thats the only way I see Paterno having any evidence to begin with). I really question the first man who saw the actual rape taking place. Why didnt he go stop it? Why didnt he do more? Again, he might not have known how to handle it at first, but if he actually saw a little boy struggling (which, i have no idea what he saw) then he shouldve known to help. But if he saw a glance and wasnt sure? Maybe you tell Paterno and then stay away. Maybe you go run in and beat the shit out of Sandusky? Shit man, its a high pressure situation. Its not everyday that you see that happening. I would certainly be shocked if I saw that happening.
January 17th, 2015 at 8:55 AM ^
This shit went on for a long, long time. Talk to any psychologist. Ten (former) kids were willing to testify and re-live their horror in court. There were probably 100 or so more unwilling to come forward with their story. That's how these things work.
Fuck Sandusky. Fuck Paterno. If you wanna be down with Penn State then fuck you too.

really? just because its bad, you assume there were hundreds of other kids that joepas saw getting raped? no, fuck you. youre just making up bullshit now with no evidence at all. was this sandusky's first time raping a kid, of course not, but to just assume that joepa had heard of hundreds of kids being raped like this (especially when sandusky was then pushed out of the program)..thats quite the assumption. there is no need to get emotional. none of us have anything to do with this case. im just trying to look at the actual facts and not things that were sensationalized by espn. the man died before he ever had a chance to defend himself.

Sandusky was an assistant for Paterno from 1969 - 1999. After "retiring" Sandusky was around Penn St and even kept an office there until 2011(!).
In 1977, Sandusky founded The Second Mile - a nonprofit supposedly dedicated to help underprivileged and "at-risk" kids.
Sandusky was a serial pedophile for a very, very long time. Do you really think the McQueary incident was the first time JoePa heard creepy stories about Uncle Jerry?
Pedophiles pattern their life around having access to kids. It's sickening. Here is a brief write up on the psychosocial profile of a pedophile that I'd encourage you to read. http://brainblogger.com/2012/07/23/a-psychosocial-profile-of-a-serial-p…

yeah, sandusky is an asshole. nobody is saying he isnt.
but you are simply making assumptions about paterno. you have no evidence. i know its not popular anymore, but i still believe a man is innocent until proven guilty. paterno didnt do anything wrong and you just guessing that he did doesnt make it true.
January 17th, 2015 at 12:56 PM ^
They did what he wanted. Anyone who chose protecting their ass over helping the abused kids gets what they deserve.
January 17th, 2015 at 4:38 PM ^
thats an assumption that you really have no evidence to support and no reason to believe other than bias
January 16th, 2015 at 11:13 PM ^
I can already see them paving the way to put joepa in the hall of fame now.
what a piece of shit. I'd vote for 10 tressel's in the hall of fame before I would give joe one vote.
January 16th, 2015 at 11:14 PM ^
Paterno was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2007, so... He's already there.
January 17th, 2015 at 12:01 AM ^
well that blows. I figured it was like the pros and you had to be retired for a few years to get in.
January 17th, 2015 at 2:47 PM ^
and then they could put all the upstanding, misunderstood HOF coaches who got a "raw deal" like him and Tressel into the same area.
