Really? Manning as the CBs coach?

I'd rather him just be let go than for that to happen.

I was thinking of-

  • Durkin: Co-DC/Special Teams
  • Anderson: Co-DC
  • Mattison: DL
  • Manning: LBs
  • Jackson: DBs

Otherwise that's just a waste of a position.

Only one guy can call plays and only so many guys can game plan.

Why is piling on Manning for ONE year as a CB coach become the cool thing to do on MGoBlog?

As I mentioned a few posts above:

Having Manning coach the CBs is not a bad thing.

#1 They were WAY better that they were the year before

#2 It was his very first year...I'd expect him to be better this year like the majority of people on this planet their 2nd year into a new job.

#3 He'll have 3 DC's on the staff on his side of the ball

#4 He's got a ton of talent coming back

#5 Some of last year's struggles were a product of things other than CBs not being in position

...also, he could flow right into a spot as the OLB/DE coach or ILB coach as soon as Mattison retires. That would be a perfect transition in a couple years.

He was a RB coach at his previous stop. What does he know about RB's since he played LB? Coaches sometimes learn how to coach other positions than they previous played. I'm not huge of Manning being the DB coach but your reasoning is flawed.

What do coaches who never played a sport know about sports at all?

I mean come on WD...that's a terrible argument.

In a similar note, you'll learn very quickly that the majority people never do anything related to the field they earned their degree in.

Regardless of how you cut it, Manning never played the position nor did he ever coach it until last year. If you are assembling a high end staff, wouldn't you perceive Manning's lack of experience as a negative? I thought our defensive backfield last year was middling at best, injuries notwithstanding.

Don't you?

CBs don't make up the entire secondary either.

No, I don't see having a young promising coach who's got the stamp of approval from MULTIPLE verteran coaches being a negative.

Especially when he's headed into year 2 which pretty much the exact same group.

It's not like Ferrigno or Funk where they had multiple years to fail. Manning just became at CB coach and they were improved from the year before, he returns everyone but Ray Taylor, he's a promising coach for the future when Mattison retires, and he will have earned a shot from Greg Mattison and Jim Harbaugh.

I'll take it for next year, no question.

Did you speak to Harbaugh directly?

Because you certainly speak as if you have some information that no one else is privy to.

...as I said before, Durkin, Anderson and Mattison are ALL DL/LB coaches. Now if you take one of those guys away, Manning at OLB/CB certainly makes sense.

In fact, before this rumor of Anderson, that's exactly where I predicted he'd be. I had Mattison as co-DC and DTs, Manning as OLB/DEs and Durkin as co-DC/ILBs.

When you add Anderson, that bumped Manning to CBs or RBs IF he's on the staff...and my solution or prediction was assuming that was the case.

And that's really not that bad of a scenario.

that when someone writes, "Jim Harbaugh would never" they're not being purely literal in that they know what he'd do.

It's understood that they're giving an opinion and/or are speculating.

People just want to be dicks and pile on because it's easier to go all "Greg Brady exact words" than to that than think about and write a reply.

And wasn't good this year...

I think you're confusing last year with his first year.

Last year the CBs played 20 yards off the LOS (exagerration) and Countess still couldn't cover anyone. This year, they were more aggressive and there was no improvement, which is why Lewis passed him.

By my logic the OL would've gotten better because lineman got better.

I never said the defense was improved because a few CBs got better.

So your analogy is inaccurate.

I'm sorry Yost but this is a very poorly thought argument.

I agree that Lewis played better but Countess took a major step back and Taylor was a 'wash' at best. Compared to expectations (fair or not) they woefully underperformed.

I think he was the exact same corner, we were just more aggressive in defensive scheme this year.

I don't think he was great 2 years ago either.

I think because he didn't improve, people see it as taking a step back. Which, in theory, it is...but it doesn't actually mean he was worse as a football player.

I think he too was "a wash" along with Taylor, didn't see much improvement from either. However, Lewis really came on.

Also thought our CBs were put in a better position by being aggresive than sitting back like they did 2 years ago.

I mean we gave up 700 less pass yards last year than we did the year before and everyone is ragging on the CBs like it was the OL two years ago.

They weren't world beaters, they weren't great...but 700 less yards than the year before, granted, CBs don't make up the entire secondary, but still.

But in college you expect players to get better one year to the next.  If they flatline, it's a failure.  Now that doesn't necessarily mean it's the position coach's fault, but it's sure not a good sign.  If there's only one CB we can point to who improved, that's not a ringing endorsement.  They are all supposed to improve.

700 fewer passing yards -- the difference in Indiana alone from 2013 to 2014 probably amounts to half of that difference.

Countess had a good season in 2013 because he wasn't asked to play press coverage. In 2014, Michigan played more man and Countess got exposed. Even if he was essentially the same player both seasons, and the scheme was the difference, it does kind of bother me that Countess' position coach didn't persuade GMat that Countess wasn't up to the task. But I don't know--I guess the story of how that went down is the kind of thing we aren't privvy to as fans.

I am really confused now.........hmmmmm..will wait for the official announcements...hopefully by Tuesday.

If this is true...what a coaching staff. Hope they ALL stay on at U of M for years to come.

JH appears to be staffing essentially 3 DCs.

Does anybody doubt at this point that he would bring in a transfer QB if he thought it would help the team?
