I am an armchair GM so take these comments with that in mind (as we all are here):  I like the Cespedes/Porcello trade because we sold high on Porcello getting a proven productive hitter and a pitcher in the deal.  I also like this trade for Simon as we have Iglesias as a defensive wizard and a good staff to help him learn the nuances of hitting with speed/quickness.

So that makes Saurez expendable. Giving up a #1 is always dicey but with a proven pitcher in Simon who I think they may transition to the bullpen some missing pieces to the WS title start to fit into place.  Also I believe all the moving and shaking is allowing for space to made in the Sherzer talks?!  We will see but I like the Tigers roster going forward.

we'd better hope Iglesias is ready to go.  Difficult injuries he's dealing with.  We're solid at second, but we can't talk about good depth unless Iglesias is part of it.

I think Porcello had finally reached his potential. Not surprising it took this long as he's only just reached the age when most pitchers have made the majors.  I think his pitching motion will lead to a very long career and lots of wins against his old club.

I like your optimism, but I think we have different definitions of proven and productive. As others have noted, Cespedes is immensely frustrating to watch as a free swinger. He's Torii Hunter with power and defense who actually somehow gets on base LESS. I'm not saying he's terrible, but I think he's the opposite of what the Tigers really needed, which was someone who can get on base with OK speed for the RBI hitters at 3-4-5. Cespedes doesn't really make us much improved offensively from last year unless he plays like a rookie again, which, you never know.

Nobody cares about 5 years down the road anymore.  This is about winning next season.  And I actually think there is still a good chance that we resign Sherzer, especially considering that Price is a FA after next season.  When push comes to shove, Illitch always opens up his wallet.  Name me one owner that wants to win more than he does?

was 15-10 last year --his best year -- but looks like he might have some unresolved legal problems which might have led to his availablility?

Accuser won't be ID'd in suit vs. Reds' Simon

A District of Columbia judge says a woman who accused Cincinnati Reds pitcher Alfredo Simon of sexual assault in a lawsuit doesn't have to publicly reveal her name unless the case goes to trial.

There is no way that losing Scherzer (assuming he isn't resigned) and Porcello from the rotation will lead to this being a better team next year, even with the addition of Cespedes, Simon, and a hopefully healthy Iglasias

Not a fan of Cespedes at all, free swinger to the bone on team that already didn't take  enough walks last year. He had an OBP lower than Hunter's last year. Complete one trick pony at the plate, all or nothing. His defense is really the area that will provide a significant upgrade over Hunter's production from the last two years.

They still haven't done squat to bolster the bullpen, assuming Simon and Greene are in the rotation. As others have said you give up valuable trade pieces in the Simon trade for a journeymen, who fell apart in the second half of the year last year. They still don't have a legitimate number 1 or 2 type of hitter either, Kinsler was awful in the second half of the year last year,  and neither Davis or Gose are 1 or 2 type of hitters.

Barring any significant move (resigning Scherzer or James Shields) I don't see how anybody could argue that this team has gotten any better and they weren't good enough last year. The window may be shut at this point.

I'm a Reds fan, and while I am sad to see Simon go, I do like the young talent they are bringing in. However, I will say that Simon was a fenomenal surprise for the Reds last year in terms of what was expected from him in the beginning of the year. Had the Reds had any resemblance of an offense what so ever, he might have led the NL in wins at the halfway point, at least. If the Tigers are looking to win now, I think he could definitely be a big help.

so let's say simon can come close to equalling porcello's production next year (which he did last year); that means tigers basically traded their AAA shortstop for an all-star left fielder in a contract year.  looks pretty good.

Because if they don't that outcome would be a moot point since there is no way that Greene can offset the loss of Scherzer. Once again, we are back to the same conclusion, that this team at best is not any better than last year's team that wasn't good enough.
