The Shawnee Indians (under chiefs Blue Jacket and Tecumseh) fought like heck in the 1790's to keep Ohio...That was some nasty business, with whites burned at the stake, dismembered alive, etc.
Here is a great book about it: The Frontiersmen by Allen Eckert

I gave most of this topic a dismissive wank or two, but you're right about that book. That whole series is fantastic for those interested in the history of the upper Midwest- OH, MI, IN, IL, etc.
Eckert died several years ago, and his one of his last books was That Dark and Bloody River (about the Ohio River), and it was very good as well.

I live in Cuyahoga County, so corn it is. I like corn.
Also, that's funny seeing "ghetto" for the Cleveland area...well, when comparing Cleveland to Detroit, that is.

12-year resident of Columbus here.
For purposes of rivalry fandom, the local populace breaks down like so:
Group A - about 20% of the population. These are the mouthbreathers who didn't play school, who wear Buckeye gear to church and whose go-to move in bed is miming 'O-H-I-O' with his hands when he fingerbangs his sister. Will spit a skoal-infested loogie at your Michigan shirt but the missing teeth will throw off his aim. Probably has 'FUCK MICHIGAN' tattooed on his abs, but it's obscured by rolls of Natty Ice-fueled belly fat.
Group B - about 45% of the population. The socially acceptable portion of the OSU fan base. Probably came from some random small Ohio town, went to Ohio State and stayed in Columbus because there is literally nowhere else worth living within a 1.5 hour radius. These comprise most of your co-workers. Might give you a friendly albeit condescending 'Go Bucks!' if they see your Michigan shirt. Probably has a brother-in-law from Group B
Group C - about 10% of the population. These are your blood brothers who hate Ohio State with a bitter vehemence. A slight dichotomy between the blessed (Michigan grads) and the oppressed (the poor souls who grew up in rebellion against OSU's shadow) and who will give you a 'Go Blue' when they see your Michigan shirt.
Group D - the remaining 25% of the population. They are guilty of the greatest sin of all in the eyes of Group A in that they flat out don't care about OSU football period. Won't even notice your Michigan shirt.

Good God my wife is also from the Cleveland area (Canton, to be exact) and that is totally accurate. To call her relatives hillbillies would be the understatement of the century. Her aunt was visiting a few years ago and she said something to me along the lines of "oh yes, the University of Ann Arbor? Aren't they Ohio's big rival or something?"

She evidently meant The University of Ohio State.

I'm from the the Canton area (the county directly south of Stark county) and there is a huge difference between Canton and Cleveland. Cleveland has its own pros and cons, but Canton and everything south of it is definitely hillbilly alley.

may be Little Detroit, but it does have two redeeming items, Tony Packo's and the Mud Hens.

As a native Ohioan, I've got to say that map is pretty accurate. I'm from a corn county just west of Columbus/Franklin county and now am in Cleveland/Cuyahoga county. I can definitely confirm both of those 2 are correct. The only correction is that the eat, sleep, breath OSU should actually be overlaid on a much wider portion (nearly all) of the state.
