Alex Malzone Elite 11

Submitted by umfan323 on

The Elite 11 QB competition has been on going and from all accounts he has performed admirably.. Just came across this video of him at the Elite 11 and decided some of our QB gurus would like to dissect it..

I logged on just to rip this "native" for a title misspelling.
I digress.....Its assumed Nussmeier will be landing a HC job in three years...so isnt Weaver at risk in following him?

The way things are going it looks like Gardner starts this year with Morris as his backup and Speight gets a redshirt (Bellomy is 3rd), then Morris has two years as a starter with Speight backing him up, then Speight gets two years.  At best Malzone gets two years assuming he redshirts.  There will be plenty of opportunities for more talented players that are a year or two younger than him to jump him in the depth chart and get playing time.  Because of the QB depth, this is really not a big deal if Malzone isn't a top notch QB IMO, especially considering he gets plenty of time to develop before he's asked to contribute.  I'd put more stock into the '16 class QB.

I would not be so quick to annoint Speight as Shane's successor.  Malzone is a Winner, and every  bit as talented as the other '15 QBs that we courted.  I see him as a 3 year starter leading us to 3 excellent seasons.

Meh.  There is no guarantee of these guys just doing "2 years and out" in perfect succession.  At some point a guy 1 class younger is going to outperform the guy in the class ahead of him and overlap that guy.  It could be Weaver, it could be Malzone, it could be class of 2017 QB.  etc.  This is not a monarchy where people are handed jobs just because it it their turn.  If a RS freshman is better than a RS sophomore he should win the job.  Same for a RS sophomore over a RS junior.  That should go for every position.

While I agree that of course the best player will play and at some point some underclassman is bound to leapfrog an older guy on the depth chart, there is no one guy that you can't point to and suggest that's the case with.  If you look at the history of UM QBs 1990-RR running a pro-style it goes Grbac, Collins, Dreisbach, Greise, Brady, Hensen, Navarre, Henne.  How many of those guys leapfrogged an older established QB that started the year before without getting injuried?  I feel like Henson maybe initially started over Brady, but he eventually took over the starting role.  I know Henne and Navarre both started as freshman, but I'm drawing a blank on who was ahead of them, maybe Gonzalez but he never started.

Anyways, the point wasn't to predict the future lineage of the QB position, but rather to note there's little pressure on him because of the depth ahead of him.

Maybe its just me but personally i do believe there may be better QBs out there and Michigan may be able to get them but honestly i would rather have a guy play QB for us that bleeds Blue and grew up obsessed with Michigan rather than someone that just liked our facilities. Personal opinion.

This whole circus is a joke.  It's cool that Malzone is there, and I'd certainly rather have someone there than not, and I'd certainly rather have someone get ranked highly while there.

But it's pretty meaningless.

One thing we know for sure about Doug Nussmeier: He is a QB guru.  While his OC chops will be tested at U-M, I have ZERO doubt that he can evaluate, coach, and build QBs.  If we offered Malzone, Nuss' saw something.  Same with Messiah.

FWIW, I agree with Magnus--I REALLy like Kearns and was hoping we'd offer/get him.

Speight, Malzone and DeWeaver are all borderline 3/4 star types.  We have certainly seen guys like that pan out better than the 5 star studs, and so much of a QB's success is dependent upon coaching, intagibles and the offense around them.  Two of our best QB's in recent history  were Griese and Brady who were much less heralded than even some of their own teammates.

QB recruits are important ... but Mich is stacked enough to see if Malzone's development is critical to the program.  If he makes Devin, Shane and Wilton produce...I think he can get the most out of Malzone.

The immediate challenge is not QB.  For this staff... the immediate is close to all that matters.  Focus on the line and everything else is gold.. uh, I mean, maize.
