What are our MBB portal needs this offseason?

Submitted by OrjiInTheEndzone on March 4th, 2024 at 2:20 PM

Granted our insane admissions and poor NIL for now, what do you think we need most this offseason?

  1. I think we need a 7'0+ center for height depth to backup Reed.
  2. A tall point guard who brings good defense.
  3. Another 3pt sniper (similar to Duncan Robinson).

I think we also need a new coach, too.

  1. The player has graduated from wherever they are transferring from.
  2. The list gets pretty tiny after #1 because most transfers who can fix this mess are in the NBA already or haven;t graduated and are not going to lose credits towards their degree.

Can we stop complaining about NIL in general and specifically as it relates to basketball?  Michigan somehow got both Shannon and Love, two guys with a plethora of transfer offers, to initially commit before admissions turned them away.  Dickinson didn't leave because UM couldn't offer him a ton of money; he left because the team turned out to be awful and he wanted a chance to win a title.

As for everything else, it'll depend on who's coaching and what he wants to run.  They definitely need more guard depth and some interior heft, but they also need a secondary creator at the 2/3 who can draw fouls and convert consistently.

Inaccurate.  He lliterally left because of NIL:

Hunter Dickinson, one of the highest-profile transfers in men’s college basketball history, revealed Tuesday a key reason he decided to depart Michigan: name, image and likeness money.

Dickinson’s recruitment in the portal was tied heavily to NIL: Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio reported in the lead-up to his commitment to the Jayhawks that a major holdup in Kentucky’s recruitment of the star big man was the program’s unwillingness to “guarantee” a certain dollar figure for Dickinson.

To be fair, who the hell would want to donate to an NIL fund for MBB right now?

If NIL isn't happening, a big part of that is Juwan not being able to get donors on board.

If people want to say that the school itself isn't dedicated enough to NIL, I would point them to the football teams retention rate. Its certainly harder as the "second sport" but program enthusiasm is through the basement floor.

the biggest need for this team is players with high basketball IQ!!! and guys who actually know how to play D. we got 2 guys that came from 2 of the best defensive teams in college basketball last year and neither are good on D, they try to do it at times and the other times they look completely lost. then there is jackson... he looks like hes out there playing pickup ball at the IM building 95% of the time...

lastly they need a true number 2 scorer. Nkamhoua was that guy but he fell off half through January probably because of his injury. Burnett showed flashes but that would only happen in 1 half of the game...

When our two main programs have an outstanding QB or PG we thrive.  Our Bball program does not have an outstanding PG nor do we have depth at the position.  I'd start there. The idea Wake Forest (who I watch a ton) got Boopie Miller from down the road at CMU and a 5 star in Sallis from Gonzaga, and we have no back up point guard show that our portal game and talent acquisition plan needs a massive overhaul.

Beyond the PG, then I would scour the portal for anyone fitting the mold of Illinois' Marcus Domask, our own (and my favorit) Chaundee Brown or Tennessee's Dalton Knecht, decent character dawgs who can play d and shoot threes.

After that, I'd find massive men 6.1o and up, who can rebound and gives fouls.  E Reid is another guy from Gonzaga at Wake that would have been a perfect fit for us and teamed well with Reid.

BUT most of all, I would get a NIL GM just like the football program just did, and apply it to the much smaller basketball program footprint.  We should dominate the portal with the resources at our disposal even given our higher academic expectations.

Another sniper? In addition to whom.

Backup Reed? You think he's goin coming back to get worse?

Take this post down. The conditional statement that it matters is utterly false.

There can be no constructive conversations about the future of the basketball team with the current staff.

An entire NCAA tournament caliber  roster and coaching staff needs to be added but I doubt that happens in one off season.

I would like to see a new coaching staff, but I'd also like to see the core of this roster stay next year. A roster loaded with JRs and SRs would be a nice way to start off for a new coach.

1- Dug / GW3

2- Transfer/ Burnett

3- Burnett / Rooths

4- Transfer/ Tschetter

5- Reed / Transfer

If Michigan can find a 2 ( Love or Shannon type,) that would be there best player, and a 3 and D guy at the 4 they could make a run at the tournament next year, and have Dug, Rooths, Reed, and GW3 ready to step up in 2025/2026.

Seriously, I think it's easier to answer: What needs do the guys Michigan will still have actually fill?

I suspect Taris Reed is about it for useful players. So.... we don't need Taris Reed.

Warde notified Michigan BB coaches that the NIL budget will be 10x what it was last year so for the 24/25 BB season the NIL budget will be a whopping $0.00.

And of course keep in mind that money is only if you can get them past admissions.

Need a coach who can run a damn set first then we can pick up our needs . Wtf are we even running out there ? My varsity teams sets better screens and Atleast attempts a back door cut or lob once in a while

I think it will be interesting to see who will come back. It appears from the MgoDepth Chart that Williams, Jackson, Burnett, and Howard all have one year left of eligibility. Dug was suspended and may not want to play school anymore.

Not sure who wants to be back or who Juwan would invite back.
