OT: Ryan Grubb will leave Alabama to be Seahawks OC

Submitted by Hensons Mobile… on February 10th, 2024 at 12:35 AM

This had been rumored for awhile. Headlines are now stating that, yes, Ryan Grubb will be the Seahawks new offensive coordinator.

Grubb was the OC at Washington with Kalen DeBoer and followed him to Alabama. However, he is actually returning to (or is it staying in?) Seattle to be the OC for Mike Macdonald.

I was struck by this paragraph in the Seattle Times:

Though the Seahawks had interest in Grubb, they had to wait to seal the deal in part to allow a 30-day window for Alabama players to enter the transfer portal to pass.

Nick Saban announced he was retiring as Alabama’s coach, opening a 30-day window. But that will pass as of Saturday.

I'm not sure how to read this other than that Seattle coaches and Alabama coaches colluded to trick all of the Alabama players into thinking that Grubb was going to be the OC so that they wouldn't jump into the portal. However, that doesn't make much sense to me. Not sure why Seattle or Grubb would care about that, not sure why Bama players would be staying for Grubb who they just met, not sure why DeBoer wouldn't rather get a jump on finding a new OC ASAP, and they'll have another opportunity to bail in the spring. Also if that were true, that's pretty mean. I feel like I'm missing something.

Juwan, Hart and Harbaugh are three very different entities. To equate them is odd.

Hart had medical issues let's not forget. His trajectory is his and his alone. I'm happy to have him as a RB coach, but he doesn't have to do/be more.

Juwan has his own issues. Talking about nadirs as if that is a comparative doesn't make sense to me. Especially when you look at details.

Even when you look at Cabana’s recruitment, it never took off on a national level. He’s a local kid that had offers from UM, MSU, Purdue, West Virginia and the low level ACC schools to go along with MAC offers and a late offer from Miami 9 months after committing to Michigan and a month before signing day.

Cabana was Hart’s second highest ranked recruit ever and it was a local kid without many other options. I don’t know how much credit he should really be getting for his recruiting abilities there.

I don’t know where you’re getting that he’s a good recruiter from. He’s okay, but I don’t know how you can look at the recruits he’s brought in and say he’s “good.” He’s really not going out and beating top programs for elite guys, Jordan Marshall is the first you could potentially make that argument for. Which isn’t that impressive of a resume when you factor in how run heavy Michigan is and we’ve had Corum in the national spotlight for the last few years. You’d think Michigan would be able to grab more elite backs.

Being a Michigan legend is completely irrelevant. Has absolutely nothing to do with his duties as a Michigan coach. Running back coaches are easily replaceable in comparison to other coaching positions. I’d like it if he stayed, I also have no fears when it comes to replacing him. Much more concerned with finding defensive coaches.

I know the feelingsball folks around here love to freak out and focus on negativity, but the transition to Sherrone has not really gone all that poorly to this point. There's a certain portion of the fanbase that will never be happy and appreciate what just occurred last season, but this all could have gone much worse. There may be some spring transfers, but it appears the players have a bond and a commitment to each other to this point.

I was fine with everything except losing Herbert to Harbaugh for a position that does not even exist in the NFL.

Felt like a no brainer where Michigan could outbid the Chargers and made some promises about building/promoting his business for other athletes (pros, youth camps) to attend in the off season.

I don't think anyone wanted to see Herbert go. The only logical explanation I can offer is that he may just have an intense friendship and loyalty to Jim that they developed over the years. I'm not even sure that it's all about money to a guy like that. He would have several opportunities in LA to develop some clients on the side for additional cash if he desires. I don't believe most of the reports on the situation because each side leaks what spin they want to put on it. About half a dozen people actually know the truth about how that all went down and they probably aren't sharing that info IMO.

It's speculation for sure, but a big deal nonetheless. This is a large part of my WTFness attitude about the AD.  It seems there is little understanding of what actually happened in the last 3 years. The regents and Ono are too busy to do AD work, but there's smoke all over the Herbert deal.

We will see what kind of black shirt culture Herbert was able to inculcate in Tress. When Blake said in CFP interviews, and I'm not going to look up the actual quote, "You just need to do what they tell you, and you will succeed at Michigan." he was talking about Herbert to some degree, but the Michigan difference in particular. If the players don't feel it, it isn't on Justin IMO. Note Blake was the exception on this, as he was always first in the building and was no small part in the culture of success.
