Harbaugh and Chargers are in “striking distance” of getting a deal done, per Mike Garafolo

per Mike Garafolo of NFL Media

Harbaugh wanted the job last year, but it wasn’t open. He’s currently interviewing for the job a second time. As one league source tells PFT, “He wants it.”

Harbaugh is in LA today for another meeting with the team.

Let's hope PFT's reporting is wrong again.

Man, we finally reach the top of the mountain, living on cloud 9, and just a couple weeks later staring into the abyss.

I'm hoping these are "strongarm negotiations" and he stays.. but at this point, I'm just trying to avoid reading about it until something is actually happening. This is way too much stress for just finally seeing Michigan step into greatness again for the first time in a long time.

Anyone else feel like this ultimately could end up like Beilein? JB could have won a shit ton more games at Michigan, been even more a legend on campus and AA. Left for NBA, went terrible and now nobody talks about ole John Beilein anymore.

2 rough years with the Chargers and JH will already be on thin ice. If Herbert doesn't sort out his struggles then LA might be changing QBs and coaches in 2026. NFL is just a different beast. I'd hate to it happen to him but he's got to win immediately.

Yeah, although Beilein would have hated (and probably struggled in) the current NIL/transfer portal atmosphere. But this is a good point overall. The chances of Harbaugh winning a Super Bowl are slim to none. The teams looking for coaches are looking for them for a reason. The Chargers might be the "best" situated, but they're as likely to be at the bottom of the AFC West than at the top of it, and I think the odds are much higher that he'd be fired in ~4 years than that he'd replicate his SF success.

I dunno, if it were me, I'd much rather cement my legacy as a legend in college than try to chase a Super Bowl I'd almost certainly never get. That's the real path to challenging his brother's legacy, since there's a decent chance John will get his second ring this year. But then again, I don't have the competitive fire and limitless self confidence that these guys seem to have...

Harbaugh also had zero titles which was used as a talking point against him until 2021.

I don't think anyone believes Jim will be unsuccessful in the NFL but being successful doesn't matter either. A couple of contending coaches were on the hot seat this year. It's been 11 years since John Harbaugh last won a Superbowl. Just because you are great coach doesn't mean you will win the title. No one would argue Bellichick's greatness but he hasn't had a playoff victory since Brady left.

What happens if SD (playing in Rams stadium) Chargers decide Vrabel fits their team better. If Vrabel isn't as controlling and insistent on calling the shots than JH, the Spanos family may decide he's a cheaper option and potentially less of a headache.

Atlanta seems likely to take Bill B (no inside info just my guess).

So Jim's two best chances dry up. Then back here for 2024, which I wanted all along. But next year IF the Bears, Cowboys, Eagles, Giants, etc. jobs open up I don't expect him to sit still in A2.

One has to hope that the NFL sends him a message that 60+ isn't the right fit, unless you're Bill B and have the hardware.

I can't imagine him moving to LA with his family.  It's such a crazy over populated city. If it was still the San Diego Chargers I could see it as it is just better (IMO anyway) and far different than LA.

Hope he stays but I get it if he leaves to try for a Super Bowl run with someone.

I am sure it will be great coaching in front of the whole 1000 Charger fans vs The Big House over 100K.  I am glad Jim got us back to the glory days and more, but I am a little bit bitter about how this whole NFL process has been going on for the past 2 years. I wished he would retire here and try to build a legacy.

Despite what some think, he doesn't care about how many fans are there or whether they "love him" or not.  All he wants is to win the Super Bowl.  I think he's more or less obsessed with it in fact.  The sooner everyone comes to peace with the fact he doesn't want to be here anymore, the better.  His actions and words over the last 3 years tell us that.

Assuming this is true..............I really don't like the fact that Michigan has been working on a contract (confirmed by Jordan Acker, who said he wants to negotiate with Harbaugh, just not in the media) while Harbaugh has been working really hard to get out of here. I also don't like that he did it right on the heels of winning a National Championship. I know a lot of people feel that he did what he set out to do and they wish him well in the next phase of his career, owing us nothing more, and I respect that. I just feel like he sort of sucked the joy out of the NC by doing it so quickly. And I hope he's forthright about why he's leaving. Sure, he doesn't owe us a view into his psyche, but I really hope he can come up with words that can make me say, "Yeah, I get why he's leaving, this makes sense," rather than some convoluted bullshit that feels like he's being dishonest. We were ALL IN. We've supported him through multiple NCAA investigations (some of us even signed a petition for a hearing that never happened). I do think he owes us transparency and honesty at this point.

I would be totally cool if Jim Harbaugh said:

"I want to go back to the NFL.  If there is a team that I can work out a good deal with this year, I will go with that team.  If not, I will try again next year.  Or the year after that.  It is a dream I want to pursue.

If you can find a temporary use for me at Michigan in the interim until that happens, I'd be glad to discuss that and get creative.  But know that it is temporary."

Maybe he could mentor Sherrone for a year as his replacement-in-waiting if the Chargers thing does not work out, or something like that.

Yes, but Harbaugh was a product of Bo Schembechler’s UofM. Bo booted Frieder for having a wandering eye.
One time can be forgiven - Bo did have a dalliance with Texas A&M when he was on a one year contract. But this annual exercise in checking out the greenness of the neighbor’s grass runs contrary to the Michigan Man / The Team The Team The Team / Who’s got it better than us stuff. At some point, the hypocrisy is a bit much.

If he said, “I love Michigan football. I couldn’t be happier with or more fulfilled by what we’ve accomplished here. It truly doesn’t get any better than this. But I’m also driven by another goal, which is to go back to the NFL and finish what I started there. I want to win a Super Bowl and I intend to do just that. This doesn’t diminish my love for this team. It’s just the next step in what I’ve always envisioned for myself.” If he said something that straightforward and it felt real and genuine, I would feel better about all this. And who knows — he may well say something like this if he leaves.

My feelings are definitely on me, but I don't think how I feel is unreasonable. I don't live in a vacuum of just me and my feelings. I spent the season avoiding the media after the Stalions thing because it was everywhere. Now, all I see is Harbaugh to the NFL, and why certain teams are a perfect fit over others and why. I had three days to celebrate and now I'm forced to move on because everyone else has. If only I was made of Teflon (and even Teflon is non-stick for only so long).

I think it's funny that back when Michigan hired Harbaugh, the knock on him from the talking heads was the he had lost the 49's locker room, his leadership style didn't work with grown men and professionals and that his personality causes him to alienate people over a short period of time.  Apparently, that is no longer a concern.

There are parallels. But. Nobody is as low as Trent Baalke. He worked to undermine Harbaugh, and served the interests of Jed Yorke's ego, to the detriment of the 49ers and his duties. Warde sort of seems to be just generally mediocre. He does not have the savvy to get what he needs from the Regents (a blank check on terms). He doesn't quite have the touch with the talent (Beilein, Bakich, Harbaugh, gone). Here is the difference. Warde *wants* those things. Baalke was malevolent. A bad actor. Warde, he would if he could.

I assume if he doesn't sign this week then he's coming back to UM, just because these other teams are going to pick their HCs and get ready for the draft.

I do think a lot of NFL insiders don't really know much but will regurgitate whatever the teams tell them because they all know none of this matters to their credibility.  Maybe the biggest name in NFL news (Schefter) is notorious for copy-pasting whatever owners want him to say.  So I'm sure they are within "striking distance" because they're still negotiating with each other and interviewing, but they were also within striking distance two years ago with Minnesota and we're talking last year in Denver.  So we'll see.

I'm at the stage now where I just want him to sign with an NFL team so Michigan can just move on.  He obviously doesn't want to coach here anymore despite what he's said.  This NFL drama has hurt the program over the last 3 years and it's stressed out a lot of people along the way.  It's also detracted from the afterglow of winning the national championship IMO.   If winning a Super Bowl is that important to him, fine.  I wish him all the luck in the world.
