Friday Drinking Thread: Dry January, anyone?

Submitted by Blau on January 5th, 2024 at 4:00 PM

Here we go, friends. The Friday before the CFP Championship game and I’m ready to party down with a tall, frosty… ice water with lemon. I, uh, I got nothing else…

Neg me if you must but my wife and I use most Januaries as an opportunity to reset our livers (and health in general) so we can continue to root for Michigan Football for many years to come. I’m a barrel-aged beer type of guy so naturally a break from beer does my wallet and waist size a huge favor.

If you feel like sharing, here are some drinking questions to consider before next Monday night:

- Do you participate in Dry January and if so, what’s your alternative of choice? What do you hope to gain from your break with alcohol other than a reprieve from hangovers and the possible drunk text or two?

- If you’re abstaining from the drink, what’s the first thing on tap Feb 1st?

- For the iron-liver folks, what’s going to be your CFP Championship game day routine, drink of choice, and ballpark your state of inebriation by the 4th Q.

** Lastly, I believe there is a Mod Sticky related to addiction and getting help if you need it. There’s never a wrong time to reach out and put your mental/physical health first!

Not dry this month, but gee it sure is nice to have proliferating NA options, particularly those made by craft establishments.
Will be drinking mead as we ride the bifrost into football Valhalla. Hail!

Dry January for the third year for my wife and me.  We actually scatter dry months throughout the year, including dry May and September as of last year.  We use it to rest our livers and as a boost for weight loss efforts.  I’m actually going to try for dry Feb/March this year to get in tip top shape for a trip to Italy.

I don’t replace with anything in particular, just nonalcoholic beverages.  I do partake in more herbal remedies while abstaining from alcohol.

Not a chance. I rebalanced the blood content of my alcohol stream with a couple martinis this afternoon. One with Arbor Winter Gin w. a MAIZE lemon twist, the second with Roku Gin w. GO BLUE cheese olives.

I'm starting way too early to get worked up for this game.

I'm giving the dry January a shot for the first time this year. No particular reason other than I'm trying to cut down some weight again. However, I did have a pour from my infinity bottle of bourbon after the Rose Bowl, and I will have one Monday to commemorate our National Championship

Dry half January.  After the end of Monday's game it'll either be a week of champagne or a week of Malort.  Then I'll dry out for bit.

Haven't decided what the weekend warm-up drinks will be.

Happy Friday all.

I’ve done it several times and can attest to how much better I felt, and especially how much better I’ve slept.  I am doing it again this year.

Athletic Brewing’s IPA is amazing.  As I understand it, it’s brewed differently and to me it tastes much more like a real beer than other alcohol free brews.

Not sure about Feb 1.  There could be red wine.

no dry January. I did a dry weekend a year ago and hated it. I am typically dry Mon-Thu anyways as I don’t want to risk being hungover at work. Just a couple beers during the week.

For the national title game I have a 6-pack of bells double cream stout and PBR.

when we win, either Oban 18 year or MacCallan Rare Cask

Dry January but I drank that Gael Ale on New Year’s Day and I will again on Monday. Will do another week in February perhaps.

I will be drinkin on that Gael Ale from Saint Canyon’s Club. Picked up a brewery fresh set when Michigan was down 21-3 in the 2022 Fiesta Bowl. Fueled the comeback.
