Title says it all. First new album in almost 30 years. I’m a big Pink Floyd fan, so this pleases me immensely.

If this is The Final Cut for the band known as Pink Floyd, then maybe as long as Roger Waters is alive and isn’t recording with David Gilmour and Nick Mason, and because Syd Barrett died in July 2006 and Richard Wright died in September 2008, if Waters gives them permission, then I suppose that Gilmour and Mason can record songs as Pink Floyd.

This Waters-less version of Pink Floyd is NOT like Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey continuing to perform together as The Who long after the deaths of Keith Moon in 1978 and John Entwistle in 2002. A band performing as Pink Floyd without Roger Waters might as well be called Pink Void.

Whether Pink Floyd without Waters is truly Pink Floyd is a matter of debate among fans.  However, let's not make stuff up.  The members of Pink Floyd do not need Roger Waters' permission to record songs as Pink Floyd.  Waters quit the band.  When he did so, he gave up all right to the name.  He actually sued the band in 1986 to prevent them from recording as Pink Floyd.  They reached an out of court settlement where Gilmour, Mason, Wright could continue as Pink Floyd but Waters kept the rights to The Wall.  Several years later, Waters even admitted he was wrong to sue. So Gilmour and Mason can record songs as Pink Floyd.  Whether you choose to buy them or even listen to them is a completely separate conversation.

I've heard that it helps to be really stoned before getting into arguments with Pink Floyd purists.  Any truth to that?

I saw "Pink Floyd" in 1987 at the Silverdome -- if I had encountered any purists on that occasion I probably could have tested my theory due to the contact buzz, it was pretty cloudy in there.  Excellent show.

All. I'm just getting back to the blog after a crazy 24 hours where my newborn son tested + for COVID.  All good with my son now.  My son was acting sicker than usual so we took him in to the doc where she tested him.  Honestly, we freaked, but he really didn't need the attention.

With that, as the OP, I need to highlight the fact that this song is the basis of a new album.

A few other things I'd like to add based on some poster replies:

  • Thinking Pink Floyd is overrated is totally fine.  To each their own.
  • Pink Floyd has been without Roger Waters for decades, so saying that this is not Pink Floyd is stupid
  • I've seen Pink Floyd, Roger Waters and David Gilmour live.  And I have to say, David Gilmour is the brilliance behind what we like about Pink Floyd today.

I'm strongly considering taking in both a Waters and a Nick Mason concert.

Mason is again touring with his band 'Saucerful of Secrets'; they play almost exclusively the Syd Barrett to pre-DSOTM era Pink Floyd catalog and will be playing at the Chicago Theater this coming fall.
