Gus Johnson and the Fox Broadcast

I’m admittedly not a fan of Fox Sports’s on screen product and prefer ESPN. Having said that and acknowledging Gus Johnson is a Michigan fan as well, but he’s a trash broadcaster. He’s absolutely a frontrunning announcer. His broadcast team discounts and attempts to overplay targeting when it’s a very clear that CTE and head injuries could destroy the sport. I can’t stand him or their crew. Whenever they cover UM games I watch the games in silence. Anyone else have thoughts?

It's always difficult when announcers are covering a game involving a team that: a) you hate; and b) is really good. They're going to gush, and you're going to hate them for it. When they do that for your team, you don't notice it. But when it's for another team, an "evil team" ... :-)

Also, remember that network TV announcers have corporate bosses to report to. They're not "unbiased," and are extremely unlikely ever to directly criticize referees of the leagues that pay them. I'm not saying it never happens -- and I always appreciate it when they actually step up and disagree, vehemently -- but at the most you're likely to get is a "ooh, looks like the defender may have gotten a bit lucky not to see some laundry on the ground," or "it's a football play."

Frustrating, but ... probably inevitable.

I normally don't comment on announcers because they are all pretty bad. I think Klatt and Gus are the best tandem though. But I audibly gasped when he was looking at a player who was just knocked out cold from a blatant hit to the head and said that's just old school tough football. And then they spent 5 minutes hemming and hawing over the targeting. If a guy loses consciousness how are we even having a debate if that was a legal hit anymore?

I thought the problem with Johnson was the opposite: he usually gets so psyched for the underdogs and seems to be openly rooting for upsets. In any event, I don't really mind him and I think he can make games exciting.

My beef with this game was the shitty B1G officiating, like always! Hooray! Not only did they look at that last play multiple times and for several minutes but they somehow missed the head-to-head spear from the Ohio State player (the Minnesota WR fumbled the ball because he was out cold before he hit the ground). That also killed any chance of a thrilling finish to the primetime conference opener - way to start the season, Big Ten! That wasn't even the only missed targeting call - in the first half they missed - even on review - an Ohio St LB smashing the crown of his helmet into the QB's ribs when he was foot off the ground and clearly going down.

Fox, and everything associated with it, sucks.

Rupert Murdoch has done more to poison America than any other single person the past 30 years.

He's ruined our politics, our football, and our pets' heads are now falling off.

And I agree - Gus Johnson and his number 2 (is it Klatt?) are simply awful announcers. I'd prefer to listen to a public toilet than those two.

Don't care for him as an announcer - I don't need to be amped up by the broadcasters I just want to watch the game with minimal distraction. If he just stayed with the play-by-play I wouldn't have a problem - but his enthusiasm feels forced and fake like Rod Allen adding a 'partner' in conversation with Mario Impemba.
