MI Governor executive order calls for masks to be worn DURING HS football games by players

The new order states that a face covering must be worn at all times by athletes, unless they can maintain 6 feet of social distance.

So those in football, soccer and volleyball -- sports that just returned this week -- will need to wear face coverings at all times. Cross country, golf and tennis can go without masks, if they can stay apart. Swimmers are the only exception to any coverings.

“The COVID-19 virus is easily spread through airborne particles and can affect everyone differently,” Gov. Whitmer said in a release. "By wearing a face covering when proper distancing is not possible, athletes will be better protected from contracting the virus and spreading it to family members, frontline workers, and vulnerable populations.

“We cannot afford to let our guard down. As we continue to fight this virus, we need to make smart and informed choices so we can beat COVID-19 together.”

I don't know who needs to hear this but nobody besides liberals on the east side of the state like Whitmer. Drove all up and down the Western side of Michigan labor day weekend, nothing but Trump everywhere. Not one Biden sign could be found .The only sign I saw in regards to Whitmer were signs that said "We hate our Governor" with Hitler mustaches to boot.  Not to mention the tri state area.. Coldwater, Hillsdale, Freemont. Nothing but Trump signs. She has done nothing but virtue signal because she thinks it will help her party politically. It won't help her at all actually. Florida, Texas, Ohio are some states that have done much better than her. All red states (hopefully this election cycle)., who would have thought all those rednecks refusing to wear bike helmets would make better policy!!

Another "land over people" person -- big rural land with Trump signs doesn't count more than a tall apartment building just because the farm has more acreage. What matters more in terms of actual votes -- Coldwater or Canton? Fremont or Ferndale? Also Grand Rapids (the city) has turned blue. So in reality...

https://wwjnewsradio.radio.com/articles/gretchen-whitmers-approval-rating-rises-during-pandemic

WWJ's Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick reported that Whitmer has a 61% approval rating and a 38% disapproval rating. The Detroit News/WDIV poll found the first-term Democratic governor's approval rating has risen more than 15 points since January.

And if you are, "Polls don't matter," the most recent election was in 2018, and Dems swept statewide offices. Nothing to suggest anything different now.

I’m sure you still don’t see Biden signs in the areas you mention lol .. honestly name one reason you’d vote for Biden other than trump is mean and orange. Just one , one of his policies. Name one that will bring the voters out in masses... I’ll wait. And we’ll see if those districts are still “blue “ just like they were in 2016. Oh yeah they were all blood red, as was the state. If you don’t see that your Governor is handing votes to trump you’re naive. How about the author of the poll steps out of their comfort zone and goes and polls the areas I mentioned, would get the opposite of 62% approval. When I see people post poll numbers on this page it just makes me laugh. Nobody likes the governor besides men that wear masks in the cars and women at protests. Get out of your bubble every once in a while bud.

What are you talking about? That's a poll of the WHOLE STATE. Not just the west side or east side.

And I have family Downriver and in Macomb County; trust me, I know at least 40% of the state supports Trump. But I'm also not so dumb to believe that b/c of when I got to Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti and there are 100 Biden or Whitmer signs to 1 for Trump that Biden is going to win Michigan in a blowout. It's a big state.

Just one of his policies?
How about not repealing Obamacare without a replacement, which Trump is trying to do? He keeps saying he'll unveil his new one in two weeks. When is two weeks going to get here?
https://khn.org/news/back-to-the-future-trumps-history-of-promising-a-health-plan-that-never-comes/

Biden will actually expand it, such as allowing those 60 and older to buy into Medicare.

But I'm not going to waste anymore of my time discussing issues with someone who will be banned from this board within the week.

Haha if not repealing Obamacare is the main reason you’re voting for him , then idk what to tell you. Obamacare has proven to be the greatest failure in healthcare history (thanks Justice Roberts ). You get to keep your doctor (sure ) , premiums won’t go up (sure ) and so on and so fourth. Repealing Obamacare while keeping the Pre Existing Conditions mandate is pretty smart if you ask me. What about Biden’s 94 crime bill ? Selling out US Interests to China and Iran ? Or his love for segregationists ... or just his overall terrible policy record hahaha. We get you don’t like Trump , but it seems like you have no other reasons for voting for Biden other than you hate trump. Dems thought that would work in 2016, it’s not going to work in 2020. The only reason any conservatives get banned on this site is because the mods and posters can’t handle facts. It’s as simple as that And there’s no way that poll reflects the whole states view. When a vast majority strongly dislike her smash and grab of the state government. She needs to get ousted next election cycle , plain and simple. Once November 3rd comes around , this board will be comedic gold lol..

You might want to take your advice about getting out of a bubble.   I know you don’t like polls, but this one might give you some insight into a host of issues where people greatly disapprove of how Trump has handled things.

https://news.gallup.com/poll/1726/presidential-ratings-issues-approval.aspx

When margins are more than 60% dissaproval to less than 40% approval, that’s not something you can just discount as bad polling.

The same pollsters gave him a 60 to 38 approval on Covid in March, now it’s totally flipped at 36 to 63.   That doesn’t show a polling bias, it shows a large change in people’s opinions.

Should have specified .. my bad. In 54 days ** once he’s duly re- elected  and he’ll be your president for another 4 years (can’t wait to see the reaction on this board lol).  Those polls don’t mean a damn thing hahah. Everyone knows what they get with DT , and besides Covid.. I’d argue he’s been way more successful Geo Politically than his predecessor (which isn’t say much ). Debates on 9/29 will further solidify his chances once we see the bumbling , stumbling wreck who is Joe Biden. No platform, no spine , no more brain capacity. Can’t wait

At today's presser, a reporter asked Dr. Khaldun who is a public health expert about this situation and this is the conversation (safe to say, it didn't go well).

Reporter: What science or data are you using to require mask usage in high school athletes? (after referring to various studies by the WHO and the Cleveland Clinc that recommend not to wear a mask during exercise).

Dr. Khaldun: "I've looked at the WHO website...We understand that wearing a mask makes it less comfortable to participate in a sport. There is some data, I would not say it is proven, but there's some data that shows that the respiratory parameters, if you will- I'll try to keep my language simple, but things like respiratory rate, could potentially increase if you are wearing a mask while exercising. We do not have any proof that someone cannot exercise. If they can't, maybe they won't be able to participate at this time."

Our public health expert explained that there isn't any concrete data. Also she stated to come to this conclusion she "looked at a website." Also, she basically said "yeah there's a chance this could cause your kid to pass out. If that's the case then they should probably not play at this time."

Bad look.

Unfortunately, this does not surprise me.  I have not been at all impressed with Dr. Khaldun and her rationale or even the language that she uses.  She and Governor Whitmer have been making very strong statements regarding what is working and what does not work with absolutely no empirical evidence to back them up.  For example, many areas of the state have largely ignored some of the most stringent mandates and have done just fine.  We really have no idea if the mandates are working because we have no control group and we are largely relying on the honor system.  While I understand that to do otherwise is not very feasible, it is simply irresponsible to state that "we know that what we have been doing is working".

We've all heard the horror stories around various gatherings - Torch Lake, Diamond Lake, various bars, various graduation parties.  What we don't hear is any follow up after that which is extremely telling - if these things had resulted in serious problems (not just additional positive cases, which is entirely inevitable) it would have been shouted from the rooftops as proof of how dumb and irresponsible those people were.

One thing I think people need to keep in mind is that doctors have their own personal biases and subjectivity with regard to perceived risk and consequences.  I'm not suggesting that this is the case with Dr. Khaldun as I do not know her, however before we rely solely on their advice, particularly when it is driving mandates, we should know more about how they view the broader community.  I'm guessing many of us here can attest to inquiring with doctors and/or getting second opinions when drastic measures are advised that have serious negative consequences.

So she is asking a cohort that is at very low-risk from this virus to risk asphyxiation by performing strenuous physical activity with a mask on.  Good grief.  This is making it much more dangerous for them.

years ago, when I was much younger and more fit..... playing rec. league hockey the amount of airflow cut down by wearing a mouth guard was substantial..... I can't even imagine trying to do so wearing a friggin' mask of any type.

This is going to really hamper the swimmers
